View 3 RepliesI have a macmini (80GB HD) with an external USB HD of 160GB. The external drive has 2 partitions and on one of them (size: 100GB) I make time machine backups, but the partition also contains a few other folders. The finder tells me this partition, has only 26GB available space. looking at the size of the folders, there is only something like 30GB used, so it seems 44 GB is not accounted for!
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back
I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

I only have like 8 gb left on my macbook's hard drive. Are there any programs I can run that will defrag/free up space? How much does Apple Store typically charge to upgrade a hard drive? How easy is it to do myself?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband.
Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?
Cheers
I need to get more space on my start up disk. How do I free up space by transferring to one of my back up drives?

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.

I was just thinking about the stuff I have on my HD, and I'm not really sure what is eating up the 500gb HD I have installed in it (with only 50gb or so available at the moment). The usual culprits (iTunes and iPhoto library) are both on externals.
And i don't *think* I've got nearly 450gb worth of audio work on here.
So my question is, is there an application that will scan through my system HD and tell me which olders/files are taking up the most space? This may give me some idea of what I should start getting rid of.
is there an app or something that will tell me what programs are on my macbook pro and how much space is it taking up? and if there is an app i would only like to know about free ones

So I have a MacBook 4,1 with Windows 7 32bit installed via bootcamp. I would install 64bit however at the current time the drivers don't exist for older Macbooks for Windows 7. Anyways, I have 4GB of RAM installed and as most are aware, 32bit Windows only recognizes like 3.5GB or RAM. For some reason my Windows 7 tells me I only have 3.0GB... but that is beside the point. I want 4GB useable. Back when I had Windows XP installed, I remember enabling PAE support to allow for using 4GB... however I don't remember how I did it and I'm also sure it's a bit different in Windows 7. So long story short, anyone know how to enable PAE in Windows 7 so I can utilize 4GB of RAM? Also I've heard there are some issues even if you can get this working.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust got my i7 iMac the other day. Not all apps use all cores (as expected), but I'm interested to understand this one. Export MPEG2 (TS stream) from EyeTv to AppleTv format (I think it uses quicktime but can't tell).
Check out the pic. Now there are 4 real cores, but OSX is showing the 8 virtual cores. Anyway, given there are 4 cores, what does it imply to have around 50% total utilisation? Two threads? Four threads?
I notice that BOINC (einstein@home) only gets up to total utilisation when its running 8 threads. Does this mean that EyeTv (quicktime) is asking for number of cores and then creating that many threads? EyeTv is only showing one line time in Activity Monitor at around 400%.
Can these utilisation graphs actually be trusted when the 8 cores are virtual?

Has anyone experience that? Before the upgrade, even when I opened my Fusion VMware, I will still have at least 1-2GB available left but now I only left with 200MB available. How do I troubleshoot? Regret that I upgraded the firmware.

I recently bought a new Aluminum Macbook (2.4Ghz) and I'm having some issues regarding HD space. To be more specific, when I'm downloading torrents, I usually get the message that I need to free up space on my startup disk.
This makes no sense to me because I have 200G+ of available space. I think this issue may have something to do with system maintenance, but I'm not sure what. Any ideas? Keep in mind that I'm using utorrent beta, so that may have something to do with it.
I'm not sure what it means to clear user cache or any of that nonsense, so can someone please fill me in on what I should do to keep my machine running smooth?
My Wife was using our 15" MacBook Pro (Model just before unibody) and it suddenly said that it was out of disk space. zero k available. I check and my iphoto '09 library in the pictures folder and it is 42.85 GB but in iphoto it says there is only 27.3 GB of information.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI always seem to be losing disk space. Now it is silly, I am not adding any files to the computer but it just goes down. I have purged all cache files for lightroom, photoshop, final cut render files deleted. I restart my laptop and note the disk space, say 2 gb left, then an hour later i get the pop message no disk space left and check my Mac HD and it says 230MB or even Zero. I delete a few files, empty trash, restart machine and it does the same thing again.
I recently updated to os x 10.6.8 and on updating got an extra 30gb or so which has just been eaten up without really adding much in the way of files that would take this space, so something is just taking the space, i feel it is some kind of virus as such as it goes so quick and without downloading any files that are large.
Is there something I can do as I am trying to run my mac with no space. The problem with deleting things are is that it seems to just keep automatically losing disk space so it is a vicious cycle.

I'm using a 1 Gb pen drive, and I've just noticed that I can't even change a file's name because the system says something like "the operation cannot be completed because the disk "x" is full. Delete some files and try again" (please note that my system is in Spanish and the translation might differ).
The point is that I can see "85 MB available" in the status bar... Some files I can change them, some others I can't... I can copy some files and some others I cannot... What's going on here?
Anyone know if it's possible to clean up downloaded updates from programs on Snow Leopard?
When Adobe downloads updates for Photoshop or Acrobat for instance...after the update get's installed does the file get deleted or it stays somewhere on the system.
Same goes for Mac OSX updates...do they leave a copy of say an Itunes update on the system after it updates it...or does it get automatically deleted from the system.
I'd like to clean out any useless downloads that just sit there taking up space after they have updated the Apps on my Mac.
So does anyone know where to find these downloaded updates and if it's possible to remove them without any issues?
How much disk space does the OS and iLife (Garaband especially) take up?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy iMac has currently 40 GB out of 500GB left.
I have a 500GB external drive that has my Time Machine backup on.
What options do I have?
Most of my data is music & films. In Finder I like the way I can click Movies and there they all are.
My only option I can think of is to use my external drive as a place to put more films etc. Then buy a 1TB external drive and then somehow get Time Machine to backup both disks.
Would I lose the ability in Finder to click Movies and it show all Movies? I assume so because it can't look at 2 discs to find a folder I guess.
Are there any other options available?
I'm always running out of my Disk space, because of page in and page out. I obviously need to upgrade to 8 Gb, but in the meantime, I'm going to have increase my free space of the hard drive.
How much free disk space is recommened for OS X?
so how much disk space does windows 7 take on your computer.
I installed the 64bit ultimate version on a 2.66ghz unibody and it took 15gb! I doubt that's normal, or is it?
