OS X :: IMac Found Frozen After Software Upgrades
Nov 26, 2008
I keep my iMac on at all times. It does have a screensaver - but no sleep enabled. When I travel I occasionally access it remotely. It is only about 2 months old and lately after all the (Apple) software upgrades, almost every morning I find it frozen. The only software that is set to run overnight is a Super Duper backup - but I have turned that off and it does not appear to be the culprit. Time Machine runs automatically. I searched and tried some solutions including repairing permissions and checking preferences. Is there a log somewhere that may identify what is causing the freezes?

I haven't looked at the specs on the Mac Minis and iMacs in awhile, but I dont remember them having the NVIDIA GeForce 9400 M graphics last time I looked. I just looked at the Apple store and both the mini and iMac have this chipset.
I could be wrong, but wasn't this chipset introduced with the new unibody macbooks? if so, when where the minis and iMacs updated? Did this happen today after the WWDC keynote?

I just purchased my first mac (a macbook 2.4) and I'd love to buy a mini, but I can't justify it until it gets an upgrade. Here's to hoping that the sources in this article are wrong, since 2010 is little too far away for an upgrade for my taste....

I just recently bought an imac computer and my two friends who know a lot about apple computers thought that the fans and temperature might be a little high. The cpu fan at idle runs at just under 1200 rpm's, the harddrive fan runs at 1100 rpm's and the optical drive fan runs at 1000 rpm's. The temperature itself 40-44C. The other imac that they know of is a year old, so we weren't sure if there were newer upgrades that might be making the difference between our speeds and temperature compared to that one.

My iMac just crashed. All apps except finder gave me the beach ball, and force quit wouldn't load. I cold-booted it and it is now stuck on the screen showing the apple logo and the pin wheel, except the pin-wheel doesn't spin!

While using Mail, I got a message that there was an error with Mail and I needed to quit and reboot. When I re-opened mail, it prompted me to set it up and while it was reading the files, it froze. Subsequently, my Imac (OS 10.6.3? Snow Leopard) became frozen, i.e. my whole computer. I shut down using the back button (nothing else worked) and then restarted. I then re-booted using the regular re-start system. I was able to do 2-3 functions (the computer was super slow) and it froze again. After 2-3 repeats of the same procedure, it freezes after being turned off and on using the back button. I updated my software about 3 days ago. There was a major security update in that update. I'm waiting for a professional techy to call me back, but if you have any suggestions on how I should proceed, I'd be most grateful.

I have Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB, Serial Number YD******0TG, Software OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)   Did not have any problems until recently.  Now my finder is frozen.  When I open finder I see a lot of windowo all piled on top of each other and I am not able to click on anything and see my files. I read somewhere that Google Drive causes problems but can't find the article. I cannot afford to get rid of my files in Google Drive.  I do not have a lot of computer experience and am somewhat afraid I will do something that will make me loose a good deal of information on my computer.  Have the same problem when I try and access Mackintosh HD from my desktop. I have shut down and restarted computer.Â

It just froze on me about 20 min ago. All I was doing was listening to iTunes and browsing the music store. I looked at the temp of the computer and it seems kinda high, I don't know too much about this.

I downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.7 from the Apple website rather than using Software Update only to save time. I used Software Update to get 10.5.7 on my MacBook Pro and it took 35 minutes to download the package. Using the Apple website for my iMac, the download took about 15 minutes.
I then began the installation of 10.5.7 on the iMac. Everything went fine until it was time to restart. The computer froze on restart. I had to hold down the power button to turn off the iMac. Then I started it up and it began to load for quite a while (normal after an update). Then I logged in and went to "About This Mac" and it read that I had Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Obviously, this is an unorthodox way of updating. But am I safe with this method? Was it just a minor glitch?

2MHz PPC G5 iMac OS 10.4.11. Several attempts were made to login with wrong password. The iMac is now frozen on the login screen. Entries can be made in the Username and Password fields, but there is no response to "return" or "cmd" keys. The action buttons (sleep, login, etc.) are grayed out. Power button only puts machine to sleep, and it wakes up at frozen login screen.

When my IMac goes to sleep, the screen saver is "frozen". The only way to get to my login accounts is by "cleaning" the screen with my mouse. It's as though the screen is not refreshing itself after going to sleep and whatever the last image was, it stays. However, it's not locked up or anything. I just need to move my mouse around over the login accounts and it slowly clears away the screen saver so I can see where to click to log in. I've tried disabling the screen saver, but have the same results. Something is causing the last image to freeze on the screen when the monitor sleeps.

I was browsing the internet on my '08 iMac when the system suddenly froze immediately followed by the screen turning to nothing but vertical lines. I fear this may be an issue with the graphics card, but would anyone be able to offer any further insight?

While me and my friends were trying to figure out possible causes of this issue on LED screens, someone came up with the brilliant idea that the problem could be caused by the sound speakers. His recently LED TV had the same problem. He found out that what was causing the yellowish tinge on his TV were the Sound Speakers. Volume speakers use magnets, so the magnetic field was screwing up the colors on his tv tending to yellow.
After having removed the Sound Speakers the yellow tinge disappeared in about 2/3 hours. I tried this on my led screen laptop with a magnet I had in the kitched, and guess what! It worked, color changed, not for yellow but it changed for sure. The Sound Speakers on new IMacs are near yellow tinge, that's why some people are getting it worse. I've reported to apple. Faulty design Quality Control. If you have his tell us if you're using internal or external speakers. This may lead us to more clues.

I have an iMac and am running OS X 10.8.5. I am trying to re-install my HP desk jet software but when I put the disc in, it doesn't pop up on the desktop and I can't find it in Finder. There's nothing in Devices. I've looked at all the settings and cannot understand why it's so difficult to run the disc. In System Preferences > CDs & DVDs, I have tried both all options including open in Finder and "Ask what to do". Nothing happens.

I have a Brother MFC-9340CDW WIFI printer which my iMac says it can't find sometimes when I want to print. I think I have narrowed the problem down to when my MacBook Air is on at the same time and using WIFI on the same network If I turn off WIFI on the MacBook I can print from my IMac. I am not sure if it is a router problem or what but we use the iMac and MacBook Air at the same time quite often. Checked on the Brother website - nothing.Â

I read a few old threads about this that said to check the disc permissions on disk utility and did all that. I read something else that said turn the computer off and turned it off and then on again but it didn't work. This is the first disc I have tried to burn since downloading mavericks. I haven't had any trouble before although I don't burn too many discs. I have an early 2009 iMac.

Just downloaded the latest NVIDIA drivers - supposed to be compatible with the GT 120. Run the installation, and it says there is no compatible hardware. dxdiag and Vista both detect the card as GT 120. Has anyone had this problem or gotten around it?

I'm a proud owner of a 8core base model Mac Pro Early 2008.
When I bought it, it was for some works at the time (I needed raw cpu powah.) but never had the money to upgrade it actually, so it's still withI just added HDD since I needed space.
Now, I moved in the UK for work and was thinking about getting my MP baby here. Right now I work with a sept09 mbp unibody.
The macbook starts to clunk up since I'm doing really heavy tasks on it...so I think I start to need the beast back.
My work experience has matured since then, and so have my requests. 2GB of RAM are something to laugh at, since my workstation at work has 18 and still has problems with some scenes...so is the graphic card.
So, getting to the point (yes, I was feeling talkative today):
I need to start looking around for which are the best parts and places to buy upgrades to the machine.
I'd like AT LEAST 12GB of RAM, and a decent GPU.
Not the Quadro since the drivers suck and they cost too much ATM.
Maybe, if it's possible, also gather info about a possible CPU upgrade in the future (don't know which are compatible, if it's worth it, etc..)

I'm looking to upgrade my Mac mini's ram and to an ssd. Currently I've used up to 250 gb on my HDD. The ram upgrade is easy, 8GB. But the SSD is another thing. Money isn't too big of an issue. I would like plenty of storage. For best performance should I get a 500gb ssd(yea I know over $1000) or a smaller SSD, say 80gb as boot disk and use external HDD for more storage. And is there any places I can get my HDD replaced for cheap?

Ok I've go a Mac mini (Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.0GHz) Mid 2007 DDR2
What are my options for upgrading it?
I've checked out the crucial website and it's telling me I can swap the 2 memory modules out and change then for a pair of 1GB's taking me upto 2GB rather than the 1GB that's in it at the moment
Is 2GB the most it will take? I seen on youtube that a guy put 4GB into his but he won't comment if it really did work so I doubt it or crucial would have said
What other options do I have for it while i've got it stripped out? They won't take much better HDD so don't really see the point, unless it will take a SSD somehow?

I have a 2.4GHz MBP, 4GB RAM, 320M, 500GB HDD. This is my main to-go machine, as well as my clamshell with my ACD. I am planning on ordering 2 updates for the machine (Already ordered the first one, actually)
1. 500GB 7200.4 RPM Seagate w/16MB Cache.
2. 8GB OWC RAM upgrade.
I hear both of these are ridiculously easy upgrades to do, and this also allows me to upgrade my PS3 slim's HDD to 500GB!
Do you guys think this is a worthwhile upgrade for someone who writes code in XCode?
Also, does anyone know how to back up my iWeb site so I don't have to remake it when I format?
