Hardware :: Airport Base Extreme And Hard Drive
Dec 11, 2010
I bought a new HDD (1 TB seagate) because I want to hook it up to my airport so that I can start a movies collection. I want to be able to access it from my macbook pro ( via wireless) and from my windows desktop (via wired). But I have a lot of movies in 720p and its larger than 4gb. I understand that the airport can only recognize FAT32 drives but FAT32 cant have files larger than 4gb. Is there a format for my 1tb seagate that I can use that can be read by my airport so that it can store files larger than 4gb and I can access it through my desktop PC and macbook pro.

Have an external hard drive formatted OSX format. If I hooked external hard drive to AEBS to use as AirPort Disk, would a Windows computer be able to read this external?

I am having trouble with my new Airport Extreme base station. I want to connect a 1 gig WD My Book drive via USB and share it among the household. I either want to put my media library for iTunes on there or use it for TimeMachine. Problem is that when I plug it in, I cannot see the drive on the network. I had thought it would show up on the desktop. Even in network I have to find it and log in and if I reboot do the same. I was hoping for a more seamless install.

I have a Windows PC (w/ Vista Home Premium) and a new 15" MacBook Pro. Just bought the new Airport Extreme Wireless Base Station. Installed Airport software on the PC. Works great. Macbook works great for surfing the internet on both.
I have a WD 120GB Passport USB hard drive I want to share on the base station. I know it is designed for this.
Here is the problem:
I plug the USB hard drive in the base station and it starts flashing yellow. If I check Airport with my PC or Mac it says there is a drive error. The Hard drive is formatted for NTFS.
I think a base station can not read a NTFS format correct??? If not and I have to format the drive for a MAc as NFS Journaled than how is the PC going to be able to read it???
Is it possible for a Mac AND a PC to share files off of the drive???
I called Apple tech support and the guy I spoke to had no idea about drive formats at all. He was worthless.
Apple advertises this base station for a Mac AND a PC.
If I plug the drive into the Mac or PC it works great of course. You just have to copy files to the Mac as a Mac can not write to a NTFS drive. Easily done.
What do I need to do to make it work???

I've been looking here for the answer without any success. Well after 8 yrs I decided upgrading my linksys's router and I was able to setup my new airport extreme wireless and add my ethernet printer without using the USB option.
I noticed after using my daughter macbook pro under her log in and I was able to see my airport router and was able to change settings under airport utility.
I don't want that to happen as I want to manage everything from my Macpro and I'n afraid that anyone with another pc from outside can have access to it.
I don't have any share files except sharing the printer in the network.
Also I noticed that I can't have two seperate network name's with individual passwords for 2.4 GHz and 5GHz but I have a separete one for the guest network which I did okay.
If I add a hard drive in the airport router via USB can I use that for time machine for my daughter macbook pro?

It's a two year old 802.11a/b/g Airport Extreme Base Station.
I've tried connection via wireless and ethernet from two different Macs (one with an 802.11a/b/g Airport Extreme card and one with an 802.11a/b/g/n AE card.) I can ping the base station successfully, but I can't connect to it with Airport Utility.

I have an airport extreme base station and I heard you need a modem to connect it to, I have a bt homehub and need to just get the internet setup. I can't seem to set it up how hard I try. It shows this when I try to plug it in without the bt hub [URL] and I dont know if I have a modem or not?

In compensation for the misinformation at the point of sale about my linksys router, enough fighting with Apple scored me a free Airport Extreme Wireless router, overnight delivered. First, let me say, this router is AWESOME. Ok, so the setting up is a bit untraditional, requiring a computer application, as opposed to browser setup navigation, but whatever. This is FAST (wireless n, previous was only g), great for my wired devices, well secured, and overall just great.
So here's my question. I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Go PC edition (and formatted it from NTFS to HFS+ to save money). I have my backup on here (even though my router is right next to my iMac). So I plugged it into the router, and it detected in in the AirPort Utility, but I can't find the "Airport Disk Utility", and it's not on the disc that came with the router. How to I get it so I can mount this volume on either my wired iMac, or my wireless MacBook Pro?

I am trying to set up Time Machine to work with two Macs, using a USB drive connected to the Airport Extreme Base Station. I am using an IOMEGA 298.1 GB ST332082 0A drive, which now works fine when directly connected to my PowerMac G5. The drive shows up on the Airport Utility Disks menu, but not on the desktops of the G5 and the Intel MacBook (connected via wireless). From what I can find out, Airport Extreme requires a HD using 512 byte block size, and I am wondering if that could be the problem. Trouble is I don't know the block size of the Iomega HD and haven't been able to find out what it is.

Just bought an Airport Extreme from Apple. Is there anyway I can use it instead of my existing netopia router.
I'm getting mixed reports on whether I can do it. The AEBS appears to be able to take a dsl line.

I want to get an iMac and an AirPort Extreme Base Station. I already have a 2WIRE wireless router using 802.11b/g. Do I need to get the AEBS, or will an iMac work with my existing router? And I need to keep my 2WIRE router, so how would I hook up an AEBS to the 2WIRE router? I've heard that you have to set the AEBS to 'bridge' mode or something. Can you also give detailed instructions on how to set up the AEBS with the 2WIRE router?

I want to hook up my Canon Selphy and an external hard drive. What's the best way this can be done? My PowerMac G5 is currently hooked up to an ethernet cable. I notice there's an other one in the back... Could I just wire another cable and stick it in the back of the Airport Extreme Base?
Is there anyway I could add it to the existing wireless, or would I have to create a new one because the G5 doesn't have a airport card inside?
I'd want it to work between my MBP, iBook, and all the other laptops in my house.

Every time I play Xbox Live, it tells me that my NAT setting is not open and that Matchmaking may be slow. So my question is this, how do I open up my NAT? I went to Airport Utility>Internet>NAT tab>and unchecked both "Enable default host at:", and "Enable NAT port mapping protocol", but it still says that my NAT is Strict. So what to do?

In the next few days my setup will include an iMac that is n compatible, two apple tv's and two iphones. I also have a powerbook that won't use 'n', however this will be of nominal use.
I want to set it up where it's as fast as possible - especially for the apple tv's, but thinking the iphone will slow it down. Is this the case?

Yesterday I decided to put WPA2 Personal encryption on my Airport Extreme because I saw that other people were using it and wanted to prevent that. Well, as a result, I can no longer access my base station to change its settings. I opened up Airport Utility, Airport Admin Utility, and the Airport Setup Assistant, and none of them are able to scan and find my Airport. I think I literally locked it up by putting this encryption on it and making it on a closed network. Does anybody know how I can reset my Airport Extreme so that I can just start from scratch and not make a stupid mistake like this again? Note that I've tried holding in the "Reset button" on the back, but it doesn't work; it simply goes back to having a green light after 5 seconds.

I asked some questions about setting up a usb router type of set up and upon the advice of this board I went out last week and bought the Airport Extreme BS. I've plugged it in, installed the software on both PC and MBP and I can not, despite a week of buggering about, get the Airport Utility to acknowledge that the AEBS exists. Nor can I get the damned amber light to stop flashing. I've followed the instructions but I'm lost. Is the something I need to do that I'm overlooking?

I just bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station from Apple and I followed the set up guide.
I set up a private wireless network and a guess wireless network.
Now, the problem is that my ipod touch 2g and my other pc can not access the private network even if I enter the correct password for the private network. Any suggestions?

So i just bought my AEBS and have been reading this forum regarding the problems that may arise and how it can be solved.
But being me, I just have to try it myself before experiencing what other AEBS users have gone through - inability to use hard disks plugged into the AEBS and being able ti read and write into it from both PC and Macs.
I wanna ask is this a possible solution to all these problems:
Use a USB hub and plug in both an NTFS-formatted ext hard disk and a Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-formatted one into the AEBS.
Install Macdrive in the PC so that it can access the Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-formatted hard disk, and the NTFS one as well.
Install NTFS 3G in Mac so that it can access the NTFS-formatted hard disk, and the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) too.
This is what I thought of theoratically, i wanna know if anyone has tried this method. if everything else fails, i'm gonna sell my AEBS away. 'cause I wanna use the AEBS like cloud computing or a wireless dropbox for my home.

Is it possible to access my airport extreme base station at home from somewhere else? I have an external hard drive connected to it and would like to be able to access from work or on the go. If I can do this will it be secure and safe from other users accessing it? I've googled info on this and have come up pretty empty. I'm running a MBP 2.4 with OSX 10.6.4.

I was ok with wireless connection for several years. Recently I had to change my ISP account and now I can't get my computer to even detect the Base Station, which sits peacefully blinking yellow. Airport Admin utility can't find it either.

I have an external hard drive hooked up to my airport extreme. I have approximately 5-6 Gbs on it and it is for shared office files. I would like to be able to automatically back this data up off site. I can't seem to be able to do it with mobile me, and I don't want to have to unplugged it and take it off site to back up. Mobile me would have been great.

Im super stumped on this one. I had been using my AE with a USB Hub and HD (for TM) for several weeks. My modem went bad- 2 days later it was replaced. Now, its like the USB port on the AE is dead. I determined that the hub was bad and got a new one. Plugging the USB hard drive straight into the USB port worked for a few minutes. Plugging the printer straight into the USB port allowed me to print 1 page and then it disappeared. I need to get everything working through the hub (brand new, confirmed working). Currently, nothing shows up in Airport Utility under Disks or Printers. Ive reset the airport and disabled / re-enabled file sharing.

I've been having this problem for awhile- maybe some of your intelligent people can help me.
I have an airport extreme and two 1TB hard drives connect to it through a USB hub.
Every night, I have a program that copies one of the hard drives on to the other. This has worked for the first year that I had the setup.
Recently, when copying, the mounted hard drives will disconnect and I will loose my internet connection. When this happens, the green light on my airport extreme turns to yellow and starts flashing- is it is restarting.
This also occurs if I manually try to copy a large batch of files.
I'm usually decent at debugging computer issues, but this one has me stumped.

I have an airport extreme that is currently connected to a printer so that we can print. I want to add a hard drive to back up all the computers with time machine. They are all apple computers running leopard. I was considering buying the time capsule, but was wondering if I used a usb hub and an external drive, would this work as well also. Not trying to run any programs on the hard drive. Just want a back up in case something dies. I guess my question is should I buy a time capsule or will the external HD, usb hub route work as well.

My Airport Extreme network is working fine. The problem is that I'm sharing a hard drive which works fine with the Macs but my obligatory Windows XP computer won't see the hard drive. I have it connected to the network wirelessly and it shows as connected in XP Network places but how do I get it to see the hard drive which I have connected directly to the Airport Extreme Base Station?

So has anybody done this before?

I just got an airport extreme (brand new). I have an external HDD (lacie rugged) that I use for time machine backups. I normally connect it with firewire 800 but of course AEBS doesn't have fw800 so I used the usb, It will not show up under disks under airport utilities. It works if unplug it and plug it into the usb on my mbp and does fine. So its not a usb issue or not a format issue. I turned on share disks over WAN, but still nothing.

I just bought a new 15" MBP and Airport Extreme Base Station. I blugged a USB hub into it and 3 external hard drives into that. It will recognize 2 of them but not the 3rd. The only difference I can see is that the 3rd is a 2 bay enclose with 2 500GB's JBODed into 1 drive. The other 2 are single drive enclosures.
