OS X :: How To Configure Time Machine So It Doesn't Do A Complete Backup Every Time

Mar 7, 2009

Can someone tell me how to configure Time Machine so it doesn't do a complete backup every time?I seem to get constant errors because my disk space fills up quickly. For some reason I don't think it did this when I first started using it. I use SuperDuper also, but have a drive connected to my iMac all the time for Time Machine.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Can't Complete Backup To Time Capsule

Jun 19, 2014

MacBook Pro mid-2012, 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive, Mac OS X 10.8.5

One Time Capsule at home

One Time Capsule in vacation home

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.

During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).

It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Time Machine Doesn't Complete Because "backup Is Too Large."

Jun 12, 2012

I'm using 10.5.8 and Time Machine on a time capsule which should have enough space.  I've unchecked the "ask before deleting" option in Time Machine but no dice.  I suspect that the problem stems from when I copied my iTunes folder into my public folder so that I can share among user accounts.  It's not a copy of the folder but rather I moved it. Still, I think that time machine is trying to hold onto two copies.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time-machine - Complete Backup Every-time?

Jun 25, 2012

have a MacBook Pro 15" 10.7.4 which isn't working with TimeMachine any more When starting a backup, Time Machine tells me to backup 112kB (for example) .... an running and running, and after a short time "2kB from 112kB" ... and runnig and running and then "5kb from 112kB" and so on. The progress status is updating very slowly.

The weired thing is: the ".inProgress" file on the external hard drive (tried FireWire and USB connection) is growing to 85GB (the total used space on the hard drive) while Time machine status tells me it has saved some kB. And every backup is running in that way. Instead of backing up only the difference, all files where backuped - although the status is displaying a few 100kB - which should be the right size to backup.

- Repaired permissions > Same error

- Tried installing combo update > Same error

- Tried another external hard drive > Same error

- Tried cloning system to different hd > Same error

- excluded the Users home folder > Same error

- Interal hard drive speed > Over 70MB/s > OK

- External hard drive speed > Over 70 MB/s > OK

So had to be something with the System itself.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Configure Time Machine To Only Backup Changes?

Jun 29, 2012

After I setup an exernal drive on my network, I started using Time Machine. However, I did not know how slow my computer would become when it backs up and it backs up constantly. This is on my home computer, and there isn't that much irreplaceable data, I just want to backup documents and my photo library as they change. But it seems like Time Machine keeps backing up too much. I may not make any new documents or import any new files, and yet when time machine is backing up it says it's backing up several gigabytes; and it does so while slowing down my internet and computer processes.

All I want to do is have it backup documents and photos/media. I know you can choose to exclude certain things, but is there a way to configure it so it only backs up the things that I choose?

OS X Yosemite :: Unable To Backup / Configure Time Machine

Dec 1, 2014

My time machine hasn't backed up since November 22. Every time it went for it's scheduled back-up it skipped and went to the next scheduled backup.  When I tried to reconfigure the time capsule it won't let me select the disk that I would like to use for the time machine.  Everything else is working fine (airport wifi at least).  Here are some screenshots:

OS X :: Time Machine - Unable To Complete Backup

Dec 30, 2008

I have an Imac 24" and a Mybook external HDD. ever since Leopard came out Ive been doing backups with time machine, then one day I start time machine for my weekly backup and this message comes up: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." Now I notice that my external HDD was almost not spinning while time machine was trying to backup the status bar of time machine saying how much files need to be copied and the total amount of space needed was super slow and stoped at something like maybe 10 mb I started time machine again same message. I though maybe Mac OSX needed some permission repaires. So I did just that and after that did time machine again same problem. then I said to myself maybe my External HDD has problems so I even formated the HDD, then stated Time machine again this time it was running smoothly just like before I had the problem but the problem came back after 6 gig being copied out of the 25 gig needed to complete the backup process. Now hope I dont need a clean install of my Mac OSX or maybe its my external HDD. maybe my USB having problems?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Could Not Complete The Backup

Mar 24, 2012

Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only. You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk. Why is Time Machine insisting my drive is Read-only, when in fact it isn't? This is becoming a routine occurrence. What's troubling is the problem is easy enough to resolve by simply unmounting/mounting the Time Machine drive and selecting Back Up Now from the menu and it purrs like a kitten.

After performing the step outlined above, my latest Time Machine backup is tucked neatly away and everything is fine once more.

OS X :: Time Machine Not Working Fine / Unable To Complete Backup

Feb 13, 2009

So I finally got around to getting a 1tb drive to hook up to my airport extreme to do TM backups. I have ~420gb to backup on my mbp's hard drive. To avoid an absurdly long backup, I did the initial backup via usb (took the better part of the day).

Just now I was excited because it finished - I hooked the drive up to the extreme, mounted the drive so that it would show up as an option in the TM pref pane for a backup disk, and thought I was good to go. However, when I tried to get TM to do a backup so I could see it work (by selecting Back Up Now from the menubar), it took a ridiculously long time "preparing" and I saw that it was trying to create a whole new TM backup on the drive based on my computer's network name. It even had the audacity to think that the previous backup file was ~2gb, which freaked me out because I thought it had deleted it. But sure enough when I canceled the new backup and hooked it up to my mbp again, the backup was the correct size.

During Backup the sistem get stack and display into the "details window"  Time machine was unable to complete the backup because unable to complete the backup folder.

This problem happens with USB and Fire Wire. The file backups.backupdb is excluded from virus scanning.

Also happens time to time that (without doing things) both the partitions of the external disk disappaire from the desk-top and a message "the disk must be ejected properly" is displayed.

This two problems are independent une to the other. I have change the backup disk but both the problems persist.

Applications :: Time Machine Taking Long Time To Backup - Changing Backup Time?

Dec 11, 2009

I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal.(I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.

Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.

OS X :: Time Machine Doesn't Backup Everything - Easy Restore Able?

Nov 13, 2009

Ever since the advent of "Time machine" I have been confused by the idea that TM doesn't actually back up EVERYTHING... so I got Super duper AND Carbon Copy Cloner, thinking that they would improve my chances. If I make a superduper sparse image and want to restore from the external drive containing the image, do I also have to have SD on the external drive, or just on the original machine? Or do I need to have it on the external first and do the SD image from there? Am I better off to boot from the external and use CCC to clone to the external - and is it easy-restorable? Or do I simply use Time Machine and try not to think about what it ISN'T backing up? it's all so VERY confusing. What's the accumulated wisdom from the forum on this potentially emergency conundrum

OS X :: Migration Assistant Doesn't See Time Machine Backup?

I am trying to reinstall clean Snow Leopard on my iMac. I made a partition on my iMac internal HD(on the same physical drive as a system) for Time machine and ran backup.

After that I started up with Snow Leopard DVD, used Disk utility to clean old system partition and installed Snow Leopard.

But when I run Mingration assistant, it doesn't see Time Machine disk to restore. I see TM partitioning in finder and it's look OK, but migration assistant doesn't recognize it.

How I could force migration assitant to recognize backup? Or how I could migrate my setting from this backup?

OS X :: Older Mac Doesn't Recognize Newer Time Machine Backup

Jul 8, 2010

I got a new MBP (running Snow Leopard). I used Migration Assistant to migrate the data and setting from my old MBP (running Leopard) from my Time Capsule backup onto the new MBP. All went smoothly, and I used the new computer for a day to check all was well. This included testing Time Machine on the existing Time Capsule - all the old backups were there and it worked perfectly. the new computer also successfully added to these backups. So I wanted to refresh the old mac, so I booted from the old Leopard install disk, wiped the drive with Disk Utility, and did a clean install of Leopard. All was fine. Now I connected to the Time Capsule and attempted to use Migration Assistant to put a my stuff back onto the old computer. It wouldn't do this (couldn't see any backups). Does Migration Assistant only allow transfers from old systems onto new, not the other way round? This is a major bummer, if so. How can I get my stuff from my new computer back onto my old? Do I have to upgrade the old one to Snow Leopard in order to do this?

OS X :: Logic Board Replaced - Time Machine Doesn't Recognize Old Backup?

Dec 31, 2008

Had to have the logic board in my Mac Pro replaced due to faulty audio input jack.

Time machine backs up to an external drive (DROBO array).

When I brought the machine back home, time machine does not recognize the old backup (last backup never) and doesn't have room to backup a new system because the old TM files take up most of the drivespace.

Is there a way to "force" time machine to accept an old TM backup file? I don't want to delete everything and start again. I assume this is because the logic board (motherboard) was replaced.

Note that the system drive and all internal hard drives were not modified, and the OS was not reinstalled or anything like that.

One other item: the tech forgot to run some software at apple and my machine currently has no serial number (about this mac...) assigned. They are sending out a tech to fix this - does time machine back up based on serial number?

I can look for the TM and the iMac see the TM, but if I start the backup, a popup comes up. "The image of the backup-volume "/Volume/TMBackup/Danielas iMac.sparsebundle" cant be accessed. (Error -1)

Maybe it is not the exact error message in english, but I hope you know what I mean. Im working on a german system.

I can access the TM-Share through the finder (share: afp://[...]).

Hardware :: Time Capsule Cannot Complete Backup Using TM

Oct 2, 2010

My 1st Gen Time Capsule cannot complete a backup using Time Machine. TM says that the disk is not available, yet, it is mounted and I did a Disk Verify on it and it was "OK." Is this a sign of issues with the TC, itself? There hasn't been a backup done in 2 weeks AND internet speeds have been up and down during that time as well. I thought it might be my old "modem" or my ISP, but now I am thinking it might be the TC. If it dies, I think I might just get an AE and get a USB HDD for TM backups in addition to my weekly clones. It is too bad that Apple doesn't support TM backups on the AE and a USB HDD.

MacBook :: Time Machine To Configure New Computer?

Nov 11, 2010

I had a computer accident, and I think it my Macbook may be done for, but I do have my computer backed up through Time Machine on an external hard drive (but not a Time Capsule). When I buy a new Macbook Pro can I plug in my external hardrive and somehow configure my new computer to look like/be automatically organized like my old one? (that's what Time Machine is/supposed to do, right?) For example, I had Vmware Fusion on my Macbook and within it ran the mapping program ArcGis. If I do the "Time Machine thing" when configuring my new computer, will that all be in place (with the same file paths, etc), or will I have to re-install Vmware fusion and ArcGis, etc? Also, will there be a prompt when I open the new Macbook Pro asking me to connect an external hardrive, or something of that sort? (sorry for the dumb questions. I always backed up on Time Machine for safety, but never thought about actually how to do it).
