OS X :: Change Look Of Stack Folder?
Nov 23, 2008Does anyone know how to change the look of my stack folder?
View 10 RepliesDoes anyone know how to change the look of my stack folder?
View 10 RepliesI accidentally removed my "Downloads" stack earlier today. I thought getting it back should be easy -- just drag and drop the folder back in next to my trash icon. But now it only appears as a folder, not a stack (i.e., when I right click on it, I only have the "Options" and "Open" links, not all the stack options). Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong here? My user and applications folders that I added to my dock as stacks are still working properly.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHas anyone made their Application folder a stack? When I have a newly installed program, the icon does not display correctly in the stack. It shows a crossed out application icon. In finder the icon displays correctly.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there any way that the default stack memory limit for a user in Mac OS X Lion? You can you ulimit in Terminal.app to display information, you cannot change any values.
This is what is returned from ulimit when you try to change the stack memory size.
user@MacbookPro:~$ ulimit -s 81920
-bash: ulimit: stack size: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted
Also, the default value is 8192KB which is approx. 8MB. That is weak, especially on my 2011 iMac with 16GB of RAM. I mainly do scientific programming on my Mac (Fortran). These programs usually require a larger stack size. One option is to allocate data to the heap but that is very slow.
now I can't seem to create a new stack that allows the documents to actually stack on top of one another how do I get back to that stack or maybe I should say how do I create another documents stack because right now I only have one stack which is the downloads stack

Is there anyway to make a "Stack" require a password to see its contents?
Just thought it might be a good idea and potentially be useful
I know the Home Folder short name changing issue has been discussed already on here, and most people seem to advise either against it or to backup before proceeding. I just obtained my first MacBook Pro second hand, and it still has the previous owner's Home Folder and Short Name, even though he has deleted all his files from it, and there's only pretty much standard folders within it (Library, Applications), but nothing in them. I've been saving my own stuff elsewhere in another folder I created on the Mac HD drive. Is it fairly safe then to change his name over to my own following the steps on the Apple website, or would his home still be attached to certain important components? I'd rather not create a brand new account where I have to fiddle with settings again for everything, though I'm not sure if I may have to do that anyway. I'm using Leopard, by the way. The login he passed on at start-up still says administrator as a user name, though, not his shortname. Will that change also?
View 1 Replies View Relatedcan i change the name of my Home folder with all the docs. (music, pics)
i dont remeber naming it an i would like to change it.
I've just noticed in my rush to get my imac up & running I spelt my name wrong! I've tried to change it to my proper name, but can't see how too??
I have enclosed a pic so you can see what I mean, it's the name under applications in the finder menu under places
I am aware that there are plenty of other threads asking this question, and that there is even a page in Apple Support regarding the solution to this. The reason I've come here is because nothing I've come across has worked so far. Apple Support, and various replies to threads, have all told me that I must enable the root user, log in as the root user, and then navigate to the Users folder, at which point I could then re-name my home folder as I would normally do with any other folder, and then create a new account with the same name as the folder.
What I did was enable the root, log in as the root, and then go to the Users folder. That's where I was forced to stop, as I was still unable to edit the Home folder's name. I normally change folder names by right-clicking on the folder, selecting Get Info, and then just editing name in the little window that pops up. I know that you can also click on the folder and press enter, which is much faster. Neither of these methods worked; I'm still unable to edit the Home folder. My account is the first and only account to have been made on the computer, obviously making me an administrator, so there shouldn't be a problem there. I have a Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard.
I recently tried to edit it after reading another thread on this forum by going to the Account Preferences and right-clicking my user to access the Advanced Options. I changed my user's name to what I'd wanted it to be known as, and it did nothing to the Home folder. So I went back to change it back to what it was, and I'm unable to unlock the Lock button. I haven't logged out, and am unsure as to whether or not I'll be able to log back in again. I tried unlocking it with my account name, the name I'd changed when I was last able to access that area (which is the same as my account name), and the name it used to be, and none of them are working. This worries me greatly, as I'm now unable to log out, in case I'd be restricted from logging back in.
I have a Macbook Pro.
For some reason when I make a new folder now, I can't change the name. It just stays at Untitled Folder. I right clicked and did "Ownership and permissions" and made sure that the i was able to "read AND write". I am and so are all my groups and other. I didn't click "apply to enclosed items" cus i didn't know what it meant and it said "you can't undo this action"..
I can't even change the names to any folders i currently have. Or files I have as well. Delete doesn't even work...it just stays at whatever name it currently has.
My public folder was name using my full name. How can I change this? Firstly, where did it get my name from? Maybe I typed my full name in at some point - I can't remember, but now i use my intials for my login name and proper short name. I deselected the folder for sharing then reselected it trying to find if it was re-nameable and in doing this my full name has disappeared but my short name or initials havent been used - so now it just says "Public" - does anyone know how to name this so when someone selects my laptop under Network it shows "Yuan's" Public Folder? Maybe if I restart the laptop or repair permissions it will correct itself - ill try now.
View 4 Replies View Relatedbasically I'd like the documents folder in home to go straight to Macintosh HD 2.2 (which is my new 'documents' folder)
I've seen terminal commands that kinda do this, can it be done if so how?
A quick google didn't find me anything (although didn't try THAT hard )
You know how in your users folder you have a lot of folders (named Downloads, Documents, Music, Movies, etc), they have icons on them. How can I attach one of them to a regular folder? And also changed a folder icon totally? I know for folder changing CandyBar can do it, was just hoping there is something more practical in the OS for that
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my old MBP, my home folder (/Users/username) was just my first name, with a capital first letter. On my new MBP, it is firstnamelastname, all one word, all lower case. How can I change it?
I tried this, but I still can't edit the name.
let's see if I can explain this. I want to change me default movie folder from the the default position in my user folder onto my newly bought hard disk. Is there any way of doing this?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to change some folder icons in Leopard.
According the Helpfile, you can just past an image once you open the icon information window and click on the folder image at the top of the info window.
I have tried this and the 'paste' function is always greyed out in the edit menu.
Also, if I drag 'n' drop an image onto the folder image it does change, but the preview does not change.
Does anyone know if there are certain permissions/preferences you have to change before you are able to change icons in leopard?
ps: sorry if this question has been asked before, I searched the forums for 10 mins and couldnt find anything similar.
Thanks

to be specific I want to change the iWork '09 folder icon, I downloaded a new folder online, I have it in INCS and PNG form and its 512x512, I already searched on google for how to do this and tried copying the file and pasting it on the little icon in the "get info" boxit will copy the file over but it won't be in 512x512 size, in cover flow mode of the finder if i make it anything more than like 48x48 it disappears
View 2 Replies View Related] Trying to use ChronoSync to sync Mail between my MacPro (source) and my MacBook (target). For some reason most (not all) of the Folders end up with a red - in them on the MacBook. How do I just set all Folder permissions to Everybody (will this work?) on my MacPro so I can sync and not have a problem (or at least move on to the next one )? There are far too many Folders to go through one at a time. Already spent 30 minutes and finely ended up deleting one by mistake. Is setting to Everyone the way yo do it? Who is Staff and why does my name on the MacPro get changed to Nobody on the MacBook even though it is the same on both?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just bought an external HD for my Mac Mini as my media plus downloads were filling up my internal HD. Is the location of the Downloads Folder (and Movies) something that can be configured somewhere? I still want it to show up in my home folder. Is it as easy as deleting the old one and creating an alias for a Downloads folder located on my external HD?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI didn't use the migration assistant, since I wanted to change some key things. What I did do, was copy some old folders from my old mac to my new mac. Oddly enough, during this change, the permissions on these files got locked. Now, since I'm logged in as admin, I can unlock these files and change the permissions, but there's a lot of items and subfolders within this one folder, that I've had to change them all one by one so far. Is there a way, either through finder, or through the terminal that I can just change every item within the one folder at the same time

How can I change the destination of files I download from the internet? I don't necessarily want them going to the "Donloads" folder. I want to have a choice, or specify a different folder altogether. Windows users have this option, I have to believe us Mac users do to.

Can one change the KIND (as in "Sort by Kind") of a FOLDER from "Folder" (as seen in Finder) to Something else?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI know there are tons tutorials out there to change a file/folder's icon, mainly the "get info" method or third party software. But the moment I moved the file with custom icon to a removable media, say an external hard disk, the icon does not follow. And I can't change an icon to the files on the ext HDD as well through the "get info" method. I used to be from windows background, so I'll just set a thumbnail cover to the folder and it stays when burned to disc. (of course, the disc when opened on mac doesn't have the thumbnail cover. I didn't know before, since I didn't have a mac to check on)
Problem here is I'm hoping the custom icon can stick permanently and be seen on any removable media (CD/DVD/HDD) and viewable on a PC. I'm hoping there's a way to do so, so that I can put a representing image cover to the folders I burned for my projects. this way my lecturers can easily get an overview of the content inside each folder. And I'm not sure if these lecturers uses a mac on windows...so it'll be great if that icon is readable on both. I found out that on a fat32 external hdd, I can change the icon to the files in there, but not to a NTFS formatted hdd. Any way to work around for NTFS?
So I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and I haven't noticed much of a difference on my MacBook. Anyways, when I used to open my applications folder all my app icons were smaller and they would all fit in the box. Now when I open it, I have to scroll to get to the different apps. How can I change this back to what it used to be?
