OS X :: Won't Work With SL / Can't Get Back Apps Folder And Icons
Feb 2, 2010
After happily using Tiger for years, I finally switched to SL with the purchase of a new 27 iMac. And I hate SL already. I accidentally removed the applications folder from the dock, and when I tried to get it back, it only comes on with the address book icon. Try this to see how retarded SL is: open the applications folder in finder, and drag it to the dock - when you release the mouse, it magically transforms the icon on the dock to an address book icon - why? WTF knows. It's retarded. Really, I've only spent a few hours on SL and I find it so chock full of bugs I wish I could go back to Tiger.

I have no idea what happened. it was working fine last week, and then the other day I tried to open up iMovie and i get "The operation could not be completed / An unexpected error occurred (error code -10810)" This happens every time i try to open anything in my applications folder. the programs on my dock open up fine.

So i want to change my folder icons back to their original state, I found a set online with the default leopard icons in PNG format and I tried copying and pasting in the get info screen like you normally would but all i get is that white little preview sheet as the image (see attached screenshot)
I then found out all the original icons are saves in the resources folder so i tried those both in ICNS format and converted one to PNG but still no dice.

i am a tad stumped by this issue i'm having right now with my new imac. i noticed one day that none of my desktop aliases show any longer. in fact if i go to the desktop folder through finder my files and such show in there however none of my aliases nor those files show on the actual desktop. another thing i've noticed is that whenever i now try to drag and drop anything to the desktop whether it be a URL from safari or an alias i made in finder the dragged item simply just drags itself back to where i pulled it from.

I place document icons in my finder sidebar, and sometime later they change to folder icons. Does not matter which application they come from, it seems to happen to them all, but they are still linked to the correct documents.

First off, I've searched the forums, but can't find an answer -- sorry if I missed something.Just got a new machine running 10.6.3 -- ugh, the dock and folders and so on look like clunky Windows junk :-(I miss my simple, elegant 10.4.11 dock ...I don't want to add novelty icons or that kind of thing, I just want a borderless dock that's semi-transparent or clear. And apparently all the apps out there to change the dock background don't work with Snow Leopard.I know CandyBar can help me with the folder icons and app icons, but as far as I can tell, not the actual dock background.

After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

I have a new 21.5" iMac and have been playing around with everything. When I started two weeks ago I had an Apps folder with the Apps logo on the dock to the right of the dotted separation. All the applications are there lined up with the first application showing but for my consternation I cannot put the Applications in there folder like it was when I started out two weeks ago. This is the Snow Leopard OS.

I accidentally dropped my "Applications Folder" off my Dock when I first got my Mac and it disappeared. When I put it back by dragging the applications folder onto the Dock, instead of assuming the Applications Folder logo, it took on the logo of the first application in my Applications Folder: the Address book. Now, my desktop permanantly has the picture of the Address Book instead of the picture of the Applications Folder.
How do I fix this? ive followed other thread advice with no luck. Is there a way to re-set the Dock? Where does the logo live and how do I get it back there?

I'm an idiot, pleased to meet you.I had 2 external drives connected to my Macbook Pro, both had time machine back ups on...I meant to delete one of these but deleted the wrong one, and dragged it into Trash. On realising my mistake I tried to drag it back out of Trash, as you would normally but after "preparing to copy" for four hours it told me the drive was full...It's a 500gb drive, and the Time Machine back up is the only thing on it, so presumably it's just trying to copy itself when the back up is still present on the drive, albeit in the Trash.

My problem began when I was using Skype on my PowerBook G4 Intel, running on Tiger. First my profile photo and mood message disappeared, and I was appearing to my friend as "offline". I quitted out and then logged back in, but the information had already been lost. So I thought I'd Restart my computer.
After logging in, I noticed that all of my installed applications had disappeared from my dock, and it looks as though the dock went back to default settings.
1) Is it simply a matter of creating new icons in the dock? Or is this a symptom of a deeper problem?
2) I don't have my OS X install disk with me, because I left it in Thailand, where I'd purchased my computer, but I do have a friend with a MacBook Pro. Can I run Disk Utility to try and repair the disk from my friend's laptop?
3) Could this problem have been caused by Skype? By the way, Skype was set to NOT automatically open at my User Log-In, but for some reason, after I restarted my computer, it's been launching after I Log-In.

This is likely a Snow Leopard issue, but since it's happening on my Macbook....
Icons are (mostly) not displaying. In Finder my /Applications folder is ok, but anything new I install into it will have a name but no icon. In /Applications/Utilities no icons are showing My dock is ok, so far at least. On my Desktop (my default folder for downloads) anything downloaded will have a name but no icon. When installing a new program no icon for the app displays, just the name.

I recently changed the dock and most of the icons to custom ones and I would like to restore them all back to default. But since I no longer have the originals, I can't just copy paste each and everyone back. So how would I do this? I tried installing the combo updater hoping it would overwrite it all, but no go. I just found you can get info on an icon and then press delete or cmd+X, but it doesn't work on Mail. It erases the icon and gives me the generic "no icon" icon (white paper with writing utensils).

Every so often the Finder just freezes: can't select any desktop icons or dock apps. Relaunching Finder always fixes it, but it is annoying. I have repaired permissions, cleared caches, no dice, still happens.

recently, when I right click my icon, and bring up "get info" of the application. The picture in the top left corner, the one you are suppose to copy and paste the new icon image into is not showing up as the image of the application. It is just the standard like jpeg image paper preview icon thing. =] how to get the images back to show up? So I can change my icons?

At some point I changed the appearance of my PDF icons from the default red and white Adobe PDF image to where the PDF icons show a little image of the front cover of the PDF. Now I would like to change all of my PDF icons back to the default red and white Adobe Reader icon. Does anyone know how to do that please? I have Googled this and see instructions for how to change from the Adobe default to custom but can't figure out how to reverse that.

in all my finder windows, randomly mind you, as not all PS file icons went to that faceless (graphic) green shaded generic icon of Photoshop CS? It's rather annoying when looking through files. Double click in the finder (list) and they all show the proper larger thumbnail preview, but many of smaller icons are again, generic, but weirdly not all. I tried reinstall of PS and it did nothing. It seems to have made no difference if the jpegs were created in PS 7 or PS CS. Seems random Btw, I'm 85% sure this happened after updating to (OS X) 10.3.9. DiskWarrior, Applejack, Permissions all been run. I've looked under Finder prefs and file handling prefs in PS all say to show the icon.

I want to do a clean OS install and I'm curious how you guys back up your apps. For example; 1Password, Screenium, AppZapper etc... are apps that I own but I'm not aware of a way to back them up to an external hdd along with the registration code (like I still have it ) and say the associated files within the app.I got a lot of time machine discussion when I tried looking for a topic like mine so if I missed this it may still be good info for others getting ready for Snow Leopard.
