I have recently upgraded my computer from a G4 iMac running Panther to an Intel 21" screen model which runs Lion 10.7.3. I found that neither the Set Up Assistant or Migration Assistant worked as far as transferring the contents of the old system and therefore transferred it manually.Â
Included in the contents transferred were a number of Appleworks spreadsheets which worked in conjunction with a series of Applescripts to produce various types of textile patterns, and another series which analysed stock exchange prices. I have found that basicly none of these work and wonder if there are any programs or compilers which could be used to convert them. I have bought iWorks and both Numbers and Pages do not produce satisfactory results which is somewhat disappointing. The thought of having to learn a new Applescript volcabulary and then rewrite the Scripts is somewhat daunting hence my enquiry.Â
My wife has lots of documents in old pages format in many folders. I would like to come up with a script of some sort to batch open and close them using pages 09. The script i have in automator says the script is fine when ran but has no output.on open theFiles tell application "Pages".

My son is trying to open a .jar on his Macbook to add a mod to Minecraft. It throws an error and directs him to Console each time, but Console isn't showing any errors. Using advice on a couple of similar threads I followed some steps but ended up at a dead end.Â
The Terminal message I get when I follow the steps in another thread is this:Â

I am looking for a script to do the following:I have different files in various folders and subfolders that I wish to rename. So I need a script to search for files in all folders and subfolders of my external drive and find all files ending in .doc.Then I need each file to be renamed as "report.doc". (there is only one file per subfolder so there is no danger of having two files with the same name
View 2 Replies View RelatedI deleted my recipes file by accident. I just looked one day and it was gone. I had moved it from my document file to the desk top because I couldn't figure out how to create a shortcut for that file to eliminate going through all the steps to get to the file. Now, it is gone. Who the heck knows how that happened, but it did. the steps to recover those recipes. Most of them are written in the PAGES file extension, so the DOC recovery system I used didn't see any of my PAGES files.

I've got a movie that plays fine with the subtitles when I use VLC but when I burn it to a DVD to play in my DivX DVD player, it won't show the subtitles. Like, it recognizes there is a subtitle file there and I choose it, but they don't show up. I can't find any apps that let you convert from .sub to .srt (a more common format).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am hoping to convert WMA files to MP3 formate on a mac. I tried out the program named switch but I was unable to make that work (I was only using the trial version anyway. I did see the thread that was started in Nov 06 but it seems to be a little too old for discussion sakes. I was also hopping for new information/evolution of programs and freeware. I will try what it says about switch but I doubt it will work.
If you have any other programs, I would love to hear about them. (just as a side note, the WMA files could be protected. I don't know if they are and I dont know how to know if they are or are not. I read on the switch application page that it supports the decoded version of WMA thus that might be the reason it doesn't work).

I'm desperate to find software that will let me easily convert .flv files to .mpg. I'm willing to pay, but the cheaper the program the better.
Anyone know of a program that will allow me to take an avi/divx file and convert it to dvd so i can backup some old videos? Freeware would be preferred but i'm open for anything.

I'm trying to create an Automator service for the Finder in Lion. It gives me an "error in shell script". I just created a similar script that uses "imguru" to upload images to [URL] which works great, so i'm thinking that it's must be the line with "unzip" that creates a problem.Â

How can i open the files in the folder if you scroll to "--open file items of the name folder" you can see where I am struggling to run the script. How should this look to run, currently the script runs, with no errors or anything appearing in the folders.

This is probably very easy but I just can't get my attempts at applescript to work. I normally use Windows but the Apple server hosts our phone system and I've been told I have to delete all old voicemails for data protection reasons. I would like to delete all WAV files in a folder tree over 90 days old and have this script run once a week. The folder is on a disk called Vision Array, and the folder path is Vision, Voice, Voicemails with subfolders 2010, 2011, 2012, each with folders within them.
The folder seems to have some sort of security on it that only allows the Vision user to modify it. I know the Vision password. I've tried do shell scripts find -type f -exec rm etc but get syntax errors. I've tried delete every file whose modification date is less than etc but get errors saying the modification date couldn't be turned into Unicode. I also couldn't get this to recurse folders.

I am just starting out with applescript and could do with a pointer please. I have written a script which saves two pdf files from an active Illustrator document in the source folder of that document. The issue I am have now is that I cannot get the two files to combine into a single PDF file. The whole script is quite long and is works apart from the combine PDF part?
tell application "Finder" try open (every document file of container of file_path whose name contains ".pdf")Â on error display dialog "no PDF file located"
[code]....
Both PDF documents open and are set as the variables docRefA and docRefb, but the acrobat command 'bring to front' and 'insert page' do not seem to be working. I get an error come up in an illustrator dialog box saying "Adobe Acrobat Pro got an error: document "84056_R1.pdf" doesn't understand the bring to front message".

Being a relatively new Mac user, I'm not sure what the best freeware would be for what I want to do, and I don't want to download twenty different programs before I find the right one. So, I'm looking for recommendations.
1) I want to find a program that lets me easily convert .wma files to .mp3's.
2) I also want to find a free, simple program that allows me to unzip .rar files. (This is another case with mp3's, except I have twenty songs zipped into one, and can only play them with VLC RAR-Loader.)
