OS X Mavericks :: Limit Amount Of Space Used By Time Machine?

Aug 28, 2014

I bought a Promise Pegasus2 to replace all my external drives, including Time Machine. The only problem is that I don't want my backups filling 12TB of disk space that I'll be using for other files as well.

Is there no option to set a quota or limit as to how much space Time Machine can use? The Promise Utility doesn't have any options either.

OS X :: Why Does Time Machine Report Different Amount Of Space Left

Feb 17, 2010

I understand that time machine doesn't back up certain directories, and so the actual backup size is different, but why does the log say that my drive has 210gb of free space after time machine, but the mounted volume say it has 226gb free? I recently deleted my timemachine plist and reformatted my external oak to start time machine fresh. Is this a difference between metric an binary counting of bytes?

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Out Of Space?

Jun 2, 2014

I have a external hard drive that I have partitioned with 350 gig allocated for my Time Machine back up. Its telling me "back up faile" and that I need to delet files to free up space. It clearly says in the preference panel that "oldest backup are deleted when disc becomes full. I'm pretty tech savvy and it looks like the Time Machine optiond are pretty simple. Why wont this just continue to save the latest backup over that last one? I dont need a history of backups. I just want to have one back up that I do maybe monthly.

OS X Mavericks :: Why Does Time Machine Say Wireless Hard Drive Doesn't Have Enough Space When It Clearly Does

Dec 1, 2014

I have a 2 TB western digital hard drive connected via USB to my airport extreme (Y2012) that i've been using the past 2 years to connect to wirelessly. The hard drive has 2 partitions, ~1 TB each. 1 partition for backing up, the other for storing media. Recently I deleted my macbook pro backup. My macbook pro has a 500GB hard drive, of which about 120 GB is free.

Since I deleted the old time machine backup disk image and told time machine to start a new backup, I am now receiving an error. It's telling me there isn't enough room on the drive, when the 1TB partition i'm trying to use (as i've sucessfully done in the past) has nothing on it. 1 full TB free, and my macbook pro can't backup a 500 GB hard drive, which isn't even full itself.

I have a macbook pro early 2011, and I never know when the board is going to go koput again and I don't currently have a backup of my stuff while this problem persists.

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Backup Failed - Not Enough Space In External Disk

Sep 12, 2014

Time Machine reported it failed backup due to the shortage of disk space. But I see the total space of partition is 192GB,the whole backup snapshot estimated is 177.56G.

The massage said that " failed backup, 52.85 GB is needed for backup but it's only  25.17 GB available."

I know it's 166.35GB of ancient snapshot still exist, but why not OSX to delete it automatically and release more space for new snapshot?

By the way, I can't delete those ancient snapshot in Finder manually, perhaps permission denied.

OS X Mavericks :: IPhoto Library Deleted From Computer - Not Enough Space For Time Machine Backup?

Aug 23, 2014

My entire iPhoto Library is gone, inaccessible, doesn't show up in finder. I tried to restore my last Time Machine back up but it says that I don't have enough space on my startup disk. In order to create space I deleted everything nonessential and moved all of my essential folders such as documents, photos, videos, everything, etc. to my external drive, then deleted them from my hard drive. I emptied the trash to make sure that everything was wiped.

I tried to do the Time Machine back up of my iPhoto Library again and is still says I don't have enough space. I looked at my storage under About this Mac, and it says that 120.35 GB of my current computer storage are photos, however, I don't have ANY photos on my hard drive at all. I don't know what to do because I can't delete applications and there is literally nothing else I can delete from my computer, so I don't understand how 135 GBs of storage is being used up.

Could there be somewhere my photos are hiding? I just don't understand why my library got deleted in the first place for that matter.

OS X :: Put A Limit On Time Machine

Dec 6, 2008

I'm going to upgrade my Core Duo Macbook Pro in the next few days with a new 320gb HDD. My external disk for which also includes my Time Machine Backup is only 250GB. Obviously one is larger than the other, will this cause a problem? If so is it possible for me to put a limit on how much space Time Machine can take up?

If for example I tell it to exclude /System and /Library from the backup can I still in future when install a fresh copy of OS X, restore from a Time Machine backup?

IMac (Intel) :: Amount Being Backed Up By Time Machine Keeps Growing During Full Backup?

Dec 6, 2014

After some problems with Time Machine backup, I removed a bunch of stuff from my internal hard drive, reformatted my external HD used for backups, and started a new full backup.  Time Machine has been running for about 24 hours and gives me a status of Backing up: xx GB of yy GB.  Both xx and yy keep growing (apace) so that I don't believe xx will ever equal yy.

To cryptic?  Here are real numbers.  My internal disk being backed up contains 469.39 GB.  Backup status now says Backing up: 685.78GB of 754.42 GB.  Both numbers just keep growing. I'm happy to let Time Machine overnight (again) but, really, this can't be normal.

What's the fix or remedy or other apps to limit the hour? Some people point out "time limit" and "bed time" conflicts with each other, check only one on solved some people's problem. But it doesn't work for me

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Backup Fails Due To Lack Of Space, Although Plenty Of Space Available On External Drive?

Mar 14, 2012

I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

OS X :: Time Machine Eating Disk Space / Eat GB's Of Hard Disk Space While Preparing Backup

Dec 11, 2009

whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

IMac :: Hard Drive Not Using Full Amount Of Space

Apr 11, 2010

So I must have partitioned this hard drive (it's still somewhat new), and now, when I try to resize it to its normal setting with no partitions, it tells me I can't. Here are some screenshots documenting what I'm talking about:

Original:
When I resize it:
The popup before I choose "partition":
The error message:

I understand that I'm trying to partition something with only one partition, but I could have sworn that just expanding the partition to make it full would take care of the problem and let me get back that unused space (all 200 gigs worth). How to reclaim that unused space without losing my current data?

IMac :: Incorrect Amount Of Free Space Shown?

May 30, 2010

On view options I checked show item info, and I actually like this look a little better. But the info is incorrect, I have a 500 Gb HD partitioned to 430 for OS X and 70 for Win7. And that is exactly what it shows on the desktop, not the correct amount of free space, but the maximum capacity of the drive. I read one post that said to simply drag something into the drive, and it would re-register with the correct amount of space, tried it and needless to say it didn't work. So does anyone know how to make this work? I posted a screen to show you what I mean, but the image is so small I don't know if you will be able to see what I am talking about

My USB thumb drive won't update the amount of free space. It's constantly saying it is full, even if I delete the files on it.

It's the same on all of the thumb drives I use.  It there a "refresh" button - to get it to update the amount of data on it?

OS X :: Time Machine Using More Space Than Expected?

Aug 27, 2009

I have a 320GB internal hard drive and a 320GB external. Until recently, the "free" space on my external was very similar to the free space on my main drive (about 50% full). But then in the last few weeks, suddenly my external is almost full, yet my internal drive is still around 50%.

All I've done in the last few weeks is add a bunch of music to my iTunes, but that was only 5-10GB of space. I find it strange that Time Machine is using so much more space, even though it does have all the incremental backups.2 questions:

1) Anyone know why it might be using so much more space?

2) Is the 'rule of thumb' that an external drive should be bigger than the internal one, because of all the incremental backups?

MacBook Pro :: Lost Very Large Amount Of Disc Space For No Apparent Reason?

May 11, 2012

I have 750GB MacBook Pro and up until the other day I showed 250GB used and 500GB unused. I discovered this because the past two days my computer would just freeze and I couldn't do anything. So I ran the Disc Utility and it found some errors and fixed them. So I'm wondering if the 400GB of lost disc space now has something to do with the computer locking up? I've searched all the folders and added up their size and still come back to 250GB that I can see. So I'm assuming there's something hidden somewhere that's eating up over half my hard disc space?

OS X :: Time Machine And Hard Drive Space

Aug 26, 2009

Well my last couple of Time Machine back ups have been huge like 60GBs and my initial was approx. 100gbs, I thought time machine made smaller backups after the initial one not huge ones. Also, it seems like something is eating up my hdd space; last week I had 100gbs free and now I have only 50 and no major changes have been made to my mac so I am quite confused. Also, in my Music Folder I see a list of all of my artists and a folder called iTunes with all my apps but it also has a folder in that called iTunes Music which is 32 gb. That folder has a list of all my artists but I don't see a couple in the other folder that are in my iTunes Music folder. I used Disk Inventory X which gave me 10gbs.
