OS X Mavericks :: Getting Annoying Pop Ups On IMac
Aug 20, 2014
Im new to the iMac world and keep getting annoying pop ups EVERYWHERE… I clicked on one settings button to uninstall and it came up with I have a macvx extension which needs uninstalling… How can I do this and will it work? I looked at another safemac removal tool but it looked a bit dodgy and don't want to get into the realms of even more stuff on here which I can't remove?
Ive installed McAfee via my BT infinity package but thats not working, Someone told me I don't need security like McAfee and Norton as Apple have their own, Is this the case or should I have installed the McAfee sooner??

Only noticed this problem recently when I was using the computer in bright daylight last weekend. My i5 27" iMac has an annoying hand print right in the centre of the INSIDE of the glass. Obviously this has come from the manufacturer handling the glass incorrectly during installation. From day to day use I do not notice this because I use the computer at night with low-lighting, and the majority of the time my blinds/curtains are closed.Regardless, this is my first Mac, I have saved up long and hard for this machine. I am disappointed that such an error could occur. I paid 1760 for this computer which is a lot of money for me, and at that price you expect near perfection. I don't think I will ask for a new machine because I can't do without my Mac, is there an easy way to fix the screen problem, and if so, will it void my warranty?

Maybe I'm just not used to it, but one annoying quirk I have found with mac keyboards (I recently bought a 20 inch iMac) is the keyboard is always giving me double letters when I type that I always have to go back and edit out.
I already went to system preferences and changed sensitvity and repeat settings to the slowest.
It's ridiculous in how inaccurate it is; has anyone else experienced this problem and/or have any suggestions? Just in writing this paragraph I've had to fix at least 10 times.
No other keyboard has given me such fits before.

My mac is 6 months old has the latest OS. When I leave it playing music either in Itunes or on u tube. It shuts down to login after 15 minutes. If I am using it it does not. I have disabled all energy saving options and all "never shut down" options selected. But everytime I leave it religiously shuts down after 15 minutes.

Basically, pressing CMD+TAB or the 4 finger swipes will bring up the switch applications bar, and I'll switch apps. Say I'm flicking between iTunes and Safari, sometimes Safari will just disappear from the switch applications list and I end up selecting Finder instead.
Other times, the switch applications list just doesn't appear, but it still switches applications (i.e. it doesn't appear but if I press CMD+TAB twice, it'll switch to whatever application is third in the list).
I use CMD+TAB (4 finger swipes) all the time to switch between two active applications. If I'm working in Final Cut, I'll switch between FCP and a PDF file that has the sequence I'm working on outlined. Now, when I flick between the two, I end up switching to the wrong application etc.
This only happens if you are switching quickly. Press CMD+TAB and then press it again a couple of seconds later and you'll experience it too.

I have posted previous about the my experiences with the annoying sound sound that results from the frequent (every 20 seconds or so on my machine) parking of the C2D MBP HD (120 GB, 5400 in my case.) I have read all that I can find on the web about this "issue." Some sources report that the issue is normal while others seem to feel that some defect is present.
I have contacted Apple (1st tier Apple care reps.) twice about the HD parking and both occasions they had never heard of such an issue. They prompted me to take my MBP into an Apple store or an authoized service provider for inspection. I did so and the ASP told me that they would need to send the computer to Apple (don't know why that's just what the man said.) However, I cannot at this time part with the computer for an extended period of time so this is not an option for me.
So, I have read about this link to a program that claims to stop the HD parking of these notebook drives by writing small bits of data that is enough to keep the drive from sleeping/parking and thus removing the sound.Has anyone with my issue had any experience with this program and can testify to its effectiveness and legitimacy?BTW, I have already tried the mirror widget as a fix for this issue and, for whatever reason it does not work for me so please don't bother with the suggestion.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with an EVGA 8800 GT installed. When I bought the computer the EVGA 8800 GT was almost silent even when under max load.
Now 15 months later the EVGA 8800 GT fan is making so much high pitch noise under load that I try not to use it for heavy 3d. The noises started after about 6 months after purchasing.
Monitoring the fan speed under Rivatuner shows that it goes to 100% performance under almost any load in order to keep it at a steady 80 degrees celcius.
I concluded that the fan was becomming less efficient over time and that it had to spin more and more in order to keep the temperature down.
Dust Cleaning
I try to clean the computer for dust every 4 month, blowing air backwards into the components of the computer to remove all the dust.
I normally use my mouth (trying not to spit) and a hairdryer. This seem to work okay for the most part, but not much for the EVGA 8800 GT.
After cleaning the fan is still quite audible and hovers at 85-90% under loading producing the annoying high pitch noise.
After only a few weeks its back at 100% under load. I tryed getting Apple to replace the video card, but they refuse to since it is still working. ( I hate this kind of deffinitions. )
- Would buying a can of compressed air and blowing it backwards into the EVGA 8800 GT remove more dust than the method I normally use?
- Would anyone recommend taking of the fan in order to clean it better or should the can clean enough? - trying to compare the risk of not being able to assemble the card again.
- Has anyone had any luck reducing the high pitch noise of the EVGA 8800 GT fan, and if so how?
Aftermarket Cooling
I did buy an aftermarket cooling system called Accelero S2 without the turbo module (fan) which recieves top reviews.
Despite having build some computers in the past I am a bit reluctant to install it by removing the fan completely because I am affraid that I will somehow break the video card in the process or accidently install it in a way that fries it when temperature rises under heavy load.
It sure is tempting to try the Accelero S2, but with the EVGA 8800 GT Mac going out of market I would have to dig deep in my pockets to get a replacement if something happends to the video card.
I think I also read somewhere that the instant you take of the EVGA 8800 GT fan you cannot put it back again. Which also makes me a bit nervous if the aftermarket cooler is not able to keep the card cool.
- Has anyone had luck installing the Accelero S2 without the turbo module (fan) and if so is it easy?
- Would anyone recommend installing the Accelero S2 without the turbo module? - I am not familiar with the success rate of aftermarket cooling and how skilled you need to be to be successfull.
- Has anyone had any problems not being able to keep the video card cool with the Accelero S2 and in that case was force to reinstall the default fan again?
I really wish I could reduce the noise of the fan so I can stand using it for 3d heavy stuff again.

I currently have version 10.6.2 update for my macbook pro and after updating the EFI firmware update to 1.8 I get an annoying pop up every time I start the computer. I checked for any additional updates to see if it will go away, but I seem to have all the updates. Is there anything I should do to get rid of this pop up? Pop-up window reads: your computer's firmware is up to date with version 1.8 of the macbook pro EFI firmware update.

I have 2 AOL email addresses which are on my Mail account lists, and had no problems for a few years.
I recently changed the password on one of them (with AOL) , and now when I start Mail, instead of going automatically to the account - it 'asks' me for my password, which I input manually.
The account then loads fine.
I have put in the new password in Mail preferences - but no joy.
I want to go back to when it loaded automatically.

My Powerbook has been making a static-y sound from the back of it at random times. It sometimes won't do it all day, and then it will randomly start, and won't go away for a while. It's actually doing it right now! I've tried putting it to sleep for a few minutes, but it started back up again when i woke it up. There, it just stopped again! It can last from a few minutes to an hour, completely randomly! This problem started when I had Apple replace the logic board on the Powerbook a few months back, and numerous repairs later, nothing has changed, so I'm hoping someone here has an easy fix!

I have a 17" MBP. The last model with the silver keys. I seem to have picked up an annoying sound effect that plays itself at random. Actually its two. A door opening, then a door closing. I have deleted my browser history & cookies but its still there. Where can this little bugger be found and how do I banish it forever?

I just purchased some logitech 2.1 speakers for my Macbook Pro, and unfortanetly, there is a pretty noticeable hum or buzz coming from the speakers. When I have the volume for the speakers turned all the way up, and the volume on my computer on mute, it's most loud. It's quite annoying.
I feel like I had this problem with my previous speakers (without a subwoofer) but I resolved it somehow...What to do, what to do...

I wonder if anyone else has encountered/ been annoyed by this. When printing multiple documents on an Epson Stylus Photo R280, the "Epson Printer Monitor" window forces itself to the front every single time a new doc starts printing from the queue. You can be typing in another application, and each time a new doc begins printing, you lose your place and have to click back to what you were doing because the print monitor springs to the front. Does anyone know how to turn this off? Can anyone think of a way to stop it? I want my BACKGROUND printing back! I'm on a Mac Pro 2.66, OS X 10.5.4. This occurs regardless of which program I print from. I searched the Epson website, no dice. Googled my key terms, no luck there either.

A couple days ago I upgraded my mid 2010 MBP 13 stock hdd(Hitachi 5400rpm 250gb) to a new one (Hitachi 7200rpm 500gb 7k500). I am still amazed by how much faster and more responsive system has gone.
Some change in noise/vibration was expected, but now I am starting to get a bit annoyed by vibration and HDD noise.
Vibration gets on my nerves- the levels are nowhere high, but there was no vibration in my stock HDD. In addition, the noise of the system on idle has roughly doubled- both fan and HDD are humming at the same level.
The system is still very quiet, but I could not help noticing it anyway. Is this normal?
I tried replacing the old HDD and found out that the problems were not present with it (=I am not likely to have made some awful mistakes putting the hard drive in).
Then I tried tightening all the screws as hard as possible and putting some rubberized washers on the corners of the HDD to ensure snuggly fit. All efforts rendered no change. Are there any other methods to reduce noise and vibration?
Furthermore, I still have one day to return the 7k500 without any loss. Should I get WD Scorpio Blue 500gb instead?
I have read user reports of similar problems with WD SB 640gb drives as well. Since these drives are essentially the same, I would expect similar problems with 500gb as well.
P.S. Is there any chance that the stock HDD is slightly "downclocked" by Apple? It does vibrate a lot inside external cradle. Furthermore, I tested a couple laptops in the local Apple store. Both MBP 15" and MBP 17" where equipped with 500gb 5400rpm drives.
However, MBP 17" was vibrating much more than the MBP 15" (maybe MBP 17 HDD runs at its native speed to increase the performance. The increased size of 17" makes the vibration effects less annoying).
The stock HDD vibrates just like the current one until after 1-2s after the power button is pressed- as if some sort of regulation kicks in after that point.

My girlfriends Macbook has this popup about every 2-3 minutes while youre browsing the web. She doesnt remember ever setting a "keychain" password, and tried to type in the password that she uses to log into her macbook, but apparently it's not the same password. What can I do to get rid of this if she doesn't know the password? Can I delete and then reinstall Safari? Do I need to reformat and install the entire OSX? Should I just use Firefox and forget about Safari?

I seem to hear it more often when doing CPU intensive things like opening a program, using Flash or viewing media files.

I bought a brand new 27" iMac with 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, and it's got 8GB of RAM. Although I haven't been experiencing any specific problems with it, I noticed that it was running almost slower than my Windows 7 Laptop. Confused, I downloaded an app that monitors and clears up RAM. It started off okay, telling me I was using around 3-4 GB just for doing simple things like surfing the web and generally exploring my new Mac.
However, it started warning me that I was nearly using up all 8 GB of RAM. I double checked with the Activity Monitor and it's also warning me I'm using up 6-7 GB of RAM.
I'm not running anything other than Chrome, I've downloaded Adobe CC and Photoshop CC, but neither of them have been opened let alone running. Urk, this is my first ever day using a Mac... and I know that it shouldn't be using up 8 GB of Ram on it's first day of use.
((I'm running OS X version 10.9.4 if that makes any difference))

Just installed OS X Mavericks for my iMac last night. Wanted to do it because it was the only way for me to continue playing this game.Took awhile to install, but checked this morning and it finished and it said "Restarting computer" after the completion of the installation.
I pressed the power button and booted it up like usual, but whenever I start it up, no log in screen pops up whatsoever. I pressed keys, clicked everywhere with the mouse but nothing. All it shows is a plain, grey screen and at the moment, there's no possible way for me to log in and get on. I searched up some methods and tried to "safe boot" it which I did but it did not work. It could've possibly worked but i can't tell because my iMac screen display is broken so I'm using dual monitors but nothing shows up on my second monitor. I tried turning it off and back on, but still did not work.

After a full shutting down the computer we needed to get back on, so on restart it came up to the usual 2 user options, mine and guest.
After selecting mine and entering my password the little Ferris wheel spins as usual but then the coloured pin wheel come up and spins for about 2seconds. The screen then flashes white and it goes back to selecting between the 2 users.
I did a Command R restart and went in to Utilities and changed my password (although I was entering it in correctly before) and no change.
I am running the latest updated version of Mavericks and have unplugged all peripheral hardware from the computer, followed by a restart and no change.
I've even left the computer shut down for 2 days and on our return still the same.
