OS X Mavericks :: When To Stop Updating OS On Older Macs
Jun 21, 2014
I have a Late 09 iMac running Mavericks. (Mountain Lion really slowed it down but Mavericks actually runs better...) Have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running Mavericks. The one I am really concerned with is my wife's Macbook (late 2009 unibody). It only has 2 G ram. It is currently running Snow Leopard but doesn't have Mac App Store.
I did the update it told me to (it was overdue). It is a spinning wheel of death with the stars back ground and has been like that for 6+ hours. Should i turn it off?
I'm running Safari 1.3.2 (v312.6) on a G4 with OS 10.3.9. Safari used to be great but seems to be slowly dying (e.g. can't move to next page on eBay, can't pay on eBay). I am having to use Firefox but don't like it. Is there anything I can do to resurrect my old mate (apart from lashing out on new hardware)?
It has been a spinning wheel of death and default background. It has been like that for 6+ hours. Im scared to turn it off because I want it to update.
I'm trying to get older backups off my Time Machine hard drive but when using the Migration Assistant I only have the option to transfer the "latest backup" to my new iMac. And when I try to drag and drop the iMovie library (which is the only set of files I really want) iMovie on my iMac states I cannot open the library for either permission reasons (the first time I tried it) or because the file does not exist.
I live and die by my mailbox, I'd been using MS Outlook but it was fraught with too many bugs. A few months ago I decided to switch to Apple Mail as a lesser of two evils. I saw the demo for Apple Mail on Yosemite and it looks like a very robust program. However for now, I still find Apple Mail limiting especially with Exchange services.. but I digress.
I archive all my mail and rely heavily on the "search" feature. I recently started to notice messages I was searching for were missing. Initially I wrote this off to user error, however today I looked in my Sent folder and my Archive folder to find that there was only 30 days worth of mail?! I began to panic as I logged into my Office 365 webmail, but found relief in that all my messages were still there. The issue seems to be that Apple Mail is not keeping or displaying messages older then roughly 30 days. I've been using Apple mail for almost three months, so these messages should be there.
My mac mail will not download mails newer than 30 days to my inbox.
Mails older than 30 days are downloading fine from my godaddy IMAP account.
I tried on another mac with the same result! Using another mail client than Apple mail or iOS mail on my phone works fine so the issue seems to be related to the Apple mail client (and/or iCloud?!).
Sent mails are synced OK so it is only an inbox related issue.
Rebuilding the mail database does not work. What to do next ?!

How do I tell what year my iMac is? I wish to upgrade a 24" iMac to Mavericks. If I cannot upgrade without updating hardware I wish to know what hardware I need to best upgrade my iMac (short of buying a new iMac).
I have a Macbook Pro and iMac on the same network. I'd like folderX on the MBP to be basically mirrored on the iMac. If the MBP goes down or I need to send it in for repairs, I want the iMac to always have an updated version of folderX so I can continue working on this content from the iMac. Then when I get the MBP back, I'd like the MBP to be updated with latest changes from the iMac and then have the MBP once again become the primary and ship folderX updates to the iMac.
I believe a Time Machine from the MBP to the iMac might work? I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule and TM is in use on my MBP. But can I only have 1 TM per computer?
I have lots of emails missing from my mailbox from the day i upgraded to mavricks
Example i have a mailbox called "machines" which shows only email from 20-02-14 all mails before that date are missing..
I tried rebuild mailbox but it just shows mail from 20-02-14.
The interesting part is the mail from before is still there..
when i search for a mail in spotlight from a sender it shows the mail and shows it to be in the machines folder.. i can open the mail read its content. But when i see the machines mailbox the mail is not listed there.
what could be the problem and how can i get the mails back this is happening on almost every mailbox.
If my mail is in iCloud (so says my Mac Pro running Mavericks), can I safely go and delete all emails languishing in my older iMac running Snow Leopard? I have hundreds of thousands of emails.
I use screen sharing a lot and want to be able to use it with a "headless" server (no monitor attached). I've notice with two separate "headless" macs that the screen sharing has major problems with the icon jumping and it really doesn't work. Is there a way to trick the mac with no monitor into thinking it has one? Is there some work-a-round?
I just updated my Macbook Pro to 10.9.4 today. After rebooting I have significant battery drain and extreme overheating. How can I remove the update and go back to the previos version?
I have 2 monitors on my computers - 2 Mac Pros (2011) and an iMac. All are running 10.10.1. I have one monitor in each case that is the "home" monitor - with the dock and files on the desktop. All 3 of my computers keep switching the Dock to the other monitor. Once switched, the Dock stays on the other monitor until I use system preferences to change the arrangement. It started for me with OS 10.9

If I have a pdf file and I want to copy and paste it from my Mac's pdf to Word or Excel or to search a word from pdf, apparently I realized that none of these functions work, the command F (Search for a particular word) and Command C (Copy a text and paste) None of these work....

I downloaded and installed the OS Maverick's recent 10.9.3 update on my 15" Retina Macbook Pro. However since then I am unable to use certain features, like when I right-click on the Desktop, the menu bar shows only two possible options. I cannot "clean up" the icons on my Desktop anymore. Futhermore, I cannot right-click on some places at all - in Finder for example, nothing happens when I right-click on blank space. Only when I right-click on the icons itself does the menu bar pop up, and that only if the viewing mode is in list, columns, or cover flow (basically not in the "icons" viewing mode).
If I understand correctly instead of showing the possible actions that you can't do in grey, it's simply not showing them at all? Either way it's really ugly, and the usefull clean up application is gone!

i am currently using snow leopard, and I am waiting for this summer to update to mountain lion. Right now, I need the a new feature of imovie for my project, so I am thinking about buying Life 11 at this moment. However, I just want to make sure that, will updating my OS X includes updating my imovie, iphoto and everything? If yes, then I probably dont need to buy Life 11 to update my imovie now/
I have recently upgraded to Mavericks, and welcomed the map-function. However, I need to be able to put more than one stop when searching for a route, because I want to use the map to find out the length of journeys..Is there such a function, or do I have to go to other maps on the net?
Recently i've started getting pop up ads every time I go to a new website. I've got my preferences set to block ads from third parties and advertisers, but to no avail.
I have cookies blocked and pop ups blocked, but am still getting bombarded with pop ups, especially that most annoying mackeeper. How do I stop the insanity?
I have 2 email accounts setup in Mail - 1 is an iCloud email and the other is a Gmail account. All the email for the Gmail account ends up in Junk on a daily basis. How can I get Mail to not do this? The email isn't marked as Junk by mail but simply ends up in there.
