I have tried numerous times to restart my macbook pro to get to the startup manager. And even when holding down the option key, it will just take me back to the flashing file with a question mark in it.

I have a 24inch aluminum iMac running the latest versions of Snow leopard. It's a little over 2 years old. I can turn my computer on and all is fine, I can keep it running for hours on end and nothing is a problem. However, the moment I turn it off or perform a restart I get the flashing folder icon? It takes about 2 hours before I can boot the computer up again.
I've tried the following:Resetting PRAM and VRAM
Resetting the start up disk information through system preferences
Pulling an individual RAM module, booting up then trying the same with other RAM module (to check to see whether I have some dodgy RAM)
At first I thought it must be the hard drive, but why can I run my computer with no problems at all. I had it running for 2 days, and not a problem! But, the minute I turn it off, that's it, you can forget booting it up for at least another hour.
We are getting a white screen with flashing file icon with question mark inside the file.

Alright I was going to load Windows on a partition thru Boot Camp. However I decided not to and then used the Boot Camp assistant to remove the Windows partition.
Ever since I got rid of the Windows partition, I've have to hold the OPTION key just to get my MBP to boot even though there is NO other operating system installed on the old partition. If I don't hold the OPTION key it won't boot, it just goes to a black screen.
I'm new to mac's and don't know what to do.
So I bought a "new" PowerMac G4. I have two already.
The guy said it was running os 9 but now it wouldn't boot. I figured it needed an OS and the guy was wrong. I try to boot it up...

So I go thru all hell trying to install os x and what not.
It won't boot to the install CD. I finally got it to boot from my other Powermac's HD with OS X on it, but I can't seem to install OS X on this other HD, but that's not really what I'm asking here...
When I startup the PM and hold Option, nothing happens with either HD installed!!! No boot menu comes up.
Also when I hold down C, nothing happens at least nothing different. It doesn't boot to the CD.
Why is this?
Sometimes it seems to boot to my HD OS X and sometimes it boots to the CD on it's own. I can't choose what I want it to boot to unless I start the OS X and select it from there.
I had this issue a while ago but it never came to this. I have bootcamp and want to change OS, so I restart while holding option key and here are 2 outcomes
1. The screen stays grey and mac is just standing like this, I waited for 5 minutes but no options came out.
2. If I hold option immediately while Mac is restarting screen stays black and sleep button is lid up all the time, nothing happens.
I have Vista/OSX installed on my 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008). When I'm attempting to switch OS by holding alt/option during the loadup, it's no longer detecting the keypress. I have the USB wired Apple keyboard fed through my 24in dell monitor and then connected to a USB spot on the back of my mac. I've noticed that when I plug the keyboard directly into the USB on the front of the Mac, the keypress is detected just fine. The weird part is that the way I have it set up now (with the keyboard connecting through the monitor) used to work without a problem to get to the OS load screen. I recently had to reinstall OSX because of a hard drive failure and ever since, it's not detecting. It's annoying to have to unplug/replug my keyboard, just to boot in windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI verified the hard disc on my mid 2010 3.06 ghz 10.7.3 iMac this morning to be greeted by a box telling me this disc was corrupt and that I needed to restart while holding cmd+r until the apple logo appears then to repair the disc.at this point I would like to say that I am posting this from said iMac and it boots up normally and runs fine.but,when I start it holding cmd and 'r' let go at the apple logo the cog starts turning below the apple for about 10/15 seconds then the apple is replaced with a circle with a line through it (the cog keeps on spinning below it) it seems like it would just sit like this for ever - after about 5 mins I held the power button, turned it off, turned it back on again and just left it to boot up normally - no problems. thought I would try it again - turned it off, held cmd and r exactly the same as before......

I've used the bootcamp assistant to create a 200 GB partition for Windows. I installled windows 7 x64 on this partition, everything is going well so far. I'm able to press the option key after installation and run windows and perform some updates (note, I couldn't install the required software IN windows from the snow leopard disk, let's hope this is not the source of my problem).
Everything went well so I booted back to OSX and I noticed that I needed some more partitions, so I've split my Macintosh HD further into a Media and a School partition. I didn't touch the windows partition though.
After experiencing (before) with hackintosh computers I know that i have to rewrite the boot configuration of the harddrive. Because now I'm not seeing the Windows HD anymore while holding the option key at startup and therefore unable to boot into Windows anymore. Even parallels can't discover the Windows partition.
I've tried repairing permissions, and nothing. I've tried to use the repair option on the Windows 7 disk which states it can't be done.
What can I do? Do I have to repartition it again in an different order (bootcamp states that it can only create a Windows partition if there's only 1 partition in the harddrive, so it's logical to repartition the drive after bootcamp created the Windows HD or even after the installation of Windows itself). Perhaps I need to rewrite the boot config of the mac, which I don't have a clue about.
Being 64 bit windows is not an issue, because it worked at first (before repartitioning)
After clicking System Preference how do I get SCAN option to appear so documents can be scanned? Currently only the Print option is visible and having no problems with printing. Printer is a HP Laser Jet 300.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a problem I've noticed on two Macs I currently own. First I had my 20" iMac with Vista installed, and currently I have a 24" iMac with XP installed. In both cases, when I'm in Windows and need to restart (for whatever reason) and want to go back into Windows instead of OS X, the Option key does not function correctly to bring up the OS select screen, and instead will go straight to OS X, as that is the default OS I have set up to boot into.
So basically, if I restart from OS X, the Option key works fine and I can choose to go into Windows, but restart from Windows and I have no choice in the matter, it makes me go into OS X. Any idea why?
My first thought is that it has to do with the fact that I'm using Apple's bluetooth keyboard (and mouse), but once the computer has actually restarted, why would it matter? Does the computer remember the BIOS from Windows when it restarts, and therefore fails to recognize my bluetooth? For the record I have to turn my keyboard off then on again when entering windows to get it to be recognized and work, but not the mouse, which works fine.

So I had one admin user, then I added a second one. I deleted the second one because I didn't need it. Now every time I restart even though there's only one user I have to keep entering my password. How can I make it restart like it used to without needing any login and it just starts to the desktop?

It is honestly a pain to restart and hold down the Option key then choose windows. My computer seemed locked up, nothing would open. I had to force quiy everthing. I tried to normally shut it down and it wouldnt shut down. I held the on off power switch. Yesterday my G5 (Dual G5 2 Gig, 10.4.1 OS) hung up while running illustrator 7, did an escape quit. Now the computer will not restart - a hard drive icon appeared with a flashing question mark. Ran the apple restore disk and the all hard ware pieces checked out fine. When I tried to reinstall the OS it does not open past the install icon. Startup utility does not find the one and only hard drive.

I dropped my MacBook from a fairly low height the other day. Now when it boots up, the Flashing Folder-? Icon pops up. bummer. I've read around and tried everything I can find to try. I've read over posts such as: [URL]. Nothing works. My only problem is that I can't get it to boot the DVD startup disk at all. Everything I try ends with the disk being kicked out of the drive, or spinning for a while and then doing nothing.

It is not something on the desktop as I have moved the dock and can't see it, so it is definitely connected with the Application icon. I have deleted all downloads which could have been half done and I have removed an Alias I had in the Application folder. Now all the Applications appears as "Applications" in the "Kind" column when viewing in Finder.

Option clicking a dock icon should minimize all windows of the given program. It works with all icons in the dock except Finder - its window(s) won't minimize. Is this behaviour normal? If so, why? Btw, if I right click the Finder icon in the dock, the menu item "Hide" is greyed out.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on my Powerbook G4 (1.5 GHz) 15" a little Earth icon flashes about 15x. Then a small question mark flashes followed by the Mac smiley face icon. They alternate flashing about a dozen times or so. My computer then goes to the grey-on-grey Apple logo screen, then to the password login screen. I enter password and successfully get to my desktop, HOWEVER:
(1)the font on my menu bar seems to have changed. No big deal?
(2)The menu bar is incomplete as I'm missing my internet signal indicator
(3)My dock is completely gone. Cannot find it anywhere.
(4)I have desktop icons but cannot left click on any of them. When I do I just get a long blank white colored rectangle. When I roll cursor over it it turns blue. Still blank though!
(5)This is the same with the menu bar. When I click on anything (Finder, File, Edit, View, etc) the drop down menu is just blank empty space
I was playing around with this and forgot to remember the orginal setting of it.

I am currently running Mac OS X v10.6.5 on my MacBook Pro. Recently, everytime I restart I get an icon for "starfield update." The folder is located in my Applications folder but I don't know where it came from. A Google search didn't turn anything up. I can't close the app I have to force it closed. Is this something that should exist on my machine or is it some sort of malware?
