On some occasions when I attempt to uninstall some files I have to dig deep into the system - places where apparently Spotlight doesn't search -, is there a dedicated search tool that is more robust than Spotlight?
I'm using a PowerPC G5 dual 2GHz with OS X V10.5.8 with all updates installed that have been released as of this date. I've looked at a number of other topics here and elsewhere and have tried a number of ways to get this to work:
I tried using Onyx and one or two other system tools that offer the ability to rebuild the Spotlight indexes. (I've made sure that Spotlight is enabled on the volume where my mail folders live, of course.)
I've also tried that from a Terminal window:

$ sudo mdutil -E
.
I tried the following command to force the mail message files to be reimported:

$ mdimport -r /System/Library/Spotlight/Mail.mdimporter

...all to no effect. And repairing permissions and then repeating any of the above doesn't help.
I am having a problem where my mail App is not searching the entire body of the message any more. I installed Lion soon after it was released, and I believe that it has been working up until recently.Â
If I do a search, it won't search the message body, and gives me no option to search for "Message contains" (just "People" and "Subjects"). If search for subject "foo" and then click on the "Subject" pull down menu, it shows "Subject" and "Entire Message", but "Entire Message" is greyed out.Â
I've done a lot of web searching and most people with similar problems had problems with Spotlight. If I do a Spotlight search, it does find all of the mail messages correctly. Its just the Mail app that won't let me search.Â
I haven't tried re-indexing spotlight yet because spotlight seems to be working okay. Note that all of my mail accounts are "POP" accounts with the mail stored locally on my machine.Â
I recently took the plunge and installed Lion after being content with Snow Leopard....well now I have quite a few issues. When I open system preferences for some reason it automatically opens to Network...why I'm not sure. When I click show all, then click sharing, I can't make any changes in the Sharing preferences without my entire system locking up. I can't force quit or anything. I can still use the mouse but all I have is the rainbow wheel!
I have searched and searched and haven't been able to fix it. I have tried booting into the Guest account and the same problem happens there. I have trashed all the plist files everyone says to try. I have tried repairing permissions etc. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there anything else that I can do without have to do a clean re-install. I'm hearing if I do this that I won't be able to migrate my files from by backups due to permission problems?
I also took a look at my system log and it is full of this! Jul 3 22:24:26 jessica-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.Kerberos.digest-service[1307]): Exited with code: 1 Jul 3 22:24:26 jessica-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.Kerberos.digest-service): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds .....
I just installed the latest SW update...I think it included a security update. After I rebooted I lost the ability to use the "Entire Message" search in Apple Mail.I double checked my spotlight settings and the mail icon is checked and the privacy tab had nothing in it.Â
It has taken a while to pinpoint why my system has been so flaky lately. I've been having issues where my entire system would slow down and if I try to reboot, it would just hang requiring a force shutdown. Further, at times even clicking on the dock would hang the dock and issuing a killall Dock command would not restore it. I even performed an erase and install on my system and started from scratch only to find that the issue persists. After some investigative work I've found that the issue is related to time machine. The only time the system experiences this behavior is when time machine is performing a backup. It sits at "Preparing..." indefinitely. I am backing up to an AirPort disk along with two other computers, which don't experience any issues. I have also tried deleting the sparsebundle and starting with a fresh backup, however the problem reappears in a few days.
This repeats forever. Stopping the backup will not work. The only solution to get my system back is a force shutdown. This issue is very frustrating. I'm hoping someone knows what is wrong or can lead me in the right direction.
P.S. I've disabled Time Machine for now and the system is running flawless.
When I go to system prefs. and go into any submenu, the max/min/close buttons, as well as the search box, heck that entire bar just disappear. Its only when I hover over them do the individual items pop back into display, but the whole bar just doesn't restore itself. Like imagine the top bar on firefox, except its a white strip and the 3 buttons are rectangular blobs sticking out against the white. If that makes sense.
I am new here, I joined your forums to ask for some advice! I hope I'm in the right section!
Ok, so I own a MacBook Pro for the past 3 years. The thing is that, since I mix and produce music on a daily basis, I would have liked to have a stationary Mac so I decided to buy an iMac.
I have a lot of softwares installed, along with VSTs, many files, and in general many heavy interface modifications, that involve third-party programs like CandyBar, black menubar, GeekTool etc etc (to make it a more cozy enviroment to work in, 15 hours a day!) so it would be a HUGE hassle to buy the iMac and reinstall everything, I do not physically have the time to do that. Now I read in an Apple article that Time Machine "allows the user to restore the whole system, multiple files, or a single file." So my question is:
So would it be possible to just transfer the whole system to my new iMac, to be basically like opening my MacBook Pro, just like any other day? I'm mostly worried about reinstalling softwares that my college gave me (therefore, I don't have the installation DVDs) or not being able to recognize the licences anymore (I could fix that, but still), and if possible, keeping all modifications I've done on my MacBook Pro.
Would a good 2nd option be to take my MacBook on an Apple Retail Store and maybe they could do it for me? I think, when I asked 2 years ago, they said that they could, but maybe he was referring that they could just backup my files, I don't really remember. So yes, this is it! Any advice and suggestions would be welcome!
Yesterday I was using a program that was creating a disk image file on my second hard disk. The application froze and crashed, leaving a tiny img file. Whenever I try to delete this file (through finder, or command line) or the machine tries to index/backup the file etc the whole computer freezes and I have to do a hard shutdown.Â
I have tried repairing the disk but disk utility says there is nothing wrong. I also tried mounting it on another machine via firewire, the exact same thing happened, the second machine froze up when I tried to delete the file.Â
I had formatted the disk on my MacBook Pro and reinstalled 10.10.1. I then reinstalled about a dozen applications. When it came to recovery of my email I had the option of using Time Machine or a Clone of the old disk. I considered the clone first but the process was ugly so I decided to use Time Machine. I started the MacBook from the recovery drive and selected Time Machine. I chose an older Time Machine Backup (i,e. one that came from a Mavericks or even earlier version of OS X. The restore came up with an error message almost immediately so I stopped and tried to restart from the main disk holding down the option key as the machine started up. But alas there was no main partition. There were only the recovery and a third party partition to select. I chose the recovery partition again and tried to run Disk Utilities. It could see the partition. I ran disk repair and volume repair to avail. I finally formatted the space and began restoring the system from scratch.Â
Info: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
y question is : should I try to reinstall the entire operating system on to the g drive and boot from and use that as the main drive, or should I just learn how to configure all my programs to save to the g-drive. I have tons of dvds with video and data on them because I ran out of space long ago and so I am finally going to have some space so I am excited about having the g drive.I ask these questions because I have read in the past that the internal mac mini drives actually slow down the system, however I dont know if this is still true, I know the bus speed is faster etc in the new ones
I accidentally deleted my entire iTunes library. What happened was that I intended to delete all the songs from just one artist but for some reason, my iTunes deleted everything in my library which I have collected over the past 6 years. It gets worse because:
1 - I can't get my files back from my iPod because it died about a year ago 2 - I agreed to move all files to my recycle bin (at that point I had no idea I was deleting my entire library) and when I went to check the bin, none of the files were there 3 - I attempted a system restore but all it did was to return my folders with no files in them 4 - I tried to use a couple of undelete files software but none of them found the deleted files.
I'm running a G5 quad with 2x320GB Western Digital HD (striped RAID 0). I want to back up the entire system and programs to an external drive(s) I can boot from, in case the main drive(s) fail. What are my options for doing this? I want to have an exact copy of my system, in other words.
Why does Spotlight not search your system directories/files when performing a search? Does it only search within the current user's directories? Is there anyway you can make it do a more thorough search?
I installed a scanner driver (Musteck A3 600 USb scanner) and found it so dame useless and frustrating that I went out and bought an epson 10000XL scanner (even sharper than my V700). which has a very good driver (I use silverfast for my Epson V700)
but this dam musteck driver still shows up in Photoshops Input list. (there was no uninstaller on the mustek disk. and it is one of the most useless things I have ever bought)
if i take the Twain plug in out of the Photoshop plugin inputs folder, the the Epson Scan is no longer on the input list..
I have tried looking for where this bloody scanner driver is to remove it but cant find it.
is there any search program that will actually look inside the system and library folders to find files.
Spotlight Crashes when Search Something (SystemUIServer Crashes Actually). Yesterday, I installed 10.6.4 from Updater. After everything is OK, I realized that problem. When I tried to seach something from Spotlight, I got the list without icons and after 2-3 seconds, menu closed and SystemUIServer restarts. Those are the reports from Console. First I tried with Guest Account - Same Problem I created new acount-First Search, No Problem, Others have Same Problem (Thats User Account) I created 3rd and 4th account-Same Problem (Those are Admin Account)
There aren't any file named "com.apple.spotlight.plist" in my account. I deleted "com.apple.systemuiserver.plist" and restarted computer. Same Problem. What I realized after, There aren't any file named "com.apple.spotlight.plist" in all accounts, even they are admin or normal account. (Guest,2nd,3rd,4th and My Account). There are systemuiserver files in all accounts. Its looks like I have problem with system wide. I verified and repaired Disk. with System DVD. I verified and fix Permissions. with System DVD and Onyx Application. I installed 10.6.4 again and restarted again. No file named com.apple.spotlight.plist.
I'm trying out 10.7 for the first time (was using 10.6). I notice that in Finder, when I do shift-apple-F, to Find files by name, it doesn't seem to be searching system files like it did on 10.6. Is this configurable - how do I make it search and show me EVERY file on the disk matching criteria? I did a terminal command to show "hidden files" and now the Desktop has .localized and .SD_Store files (which I didn't want to see necessarily) but this hasn't seemed to help me find files below /Library and so on.
I work everyday with my 21.5' iMac and it had OS Lion before I updated to Mavericks last month. As I work with lots of files, I have also a 1TB Lacie external drive pluged into it via firewire and I constantly access these files. After I updated though, I'm experiencing a strange problem. Everytime I search for a file on Finder, all the results that come up can't be edited or even selected. This is driving me crazy because I must open another tab and go all the way through the file I want as I can't select any file from the searches. All the search results come up written in gray color and with a empty circle on its left side. I can't even click on them! For better explanation, here is a picture of what happens:
Before the update, I used to normally access every result the search came up to.
I have another iMac here in the network with Mavericks too and all the searches returns with selectable and editable results.
I had a hard drive failure in my Powerbook. I had "copied" ,not "backed up" with backup software, the entire contents of the hard drive to an external one. So i installed a new drive, installed OSX from the cd onto it in a smaller partition. Started up, copied the entire contents off the external drive onto the larger part of the partition. My thoughts were to keep the newly "installed" OSX software/system separate from the "copied" OSX software/system by partitioning it. What i wanted in the end was to be able to boot from my "copied" system and be back where I was a month ago, and disable/trash/whatnot the "installed" system that was just to get it up and going. I'm running 10.4.11 on the G4 1.67 Powerbook. So, how can I boot from the original hard drive contents? It doesn't recognize or give a choice for the copied hard drive contents with the copied system and all, just the "new" installed system.
today i was on my macbook and realized that all of my alert sounds were not working. for example, if i got a new message in ichat or new email there would be no sound. Also, when i take a screenshot there is no sound, but there usually is one. My speakers are working because i am able to play music in itunes. Also, i system preferences, the search box does not show any results like it always does
I am kicking around between upgrading video card in my 1st gen Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 dual core, 8gb ram) from 7300 Gt to ati 4870 vs. upgrading to a newer system altogether...
Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.
I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.
I want a list of all my non system files to put into a text document. I use the command "ls * -r" in terminal to get the list. However it does not seem complete. I need assurance all volumes are there before I transfer to a text document.
I am unable to use the search window on the right to get results when Google is selected as the search engine.I type in a search term and I am directed to a blank google search page. I have to type in the search term again, then I see a list of "hits". But when
I click on one of these hits I am not directed to the URL displayed. I have quit out of Safari and relaunched. I have rebooted my Mac. Neither changes the problem... This is a Google problem: I have the same symptoms when I use Safari on Windows XP. When I switch the search engine to Bing, the problems go away, for both platforms Has Google been hacked? Is this a Google attack on Safari? How can I enter GoGoDuck as a search engine choice? Â
On my macbook pro which is using mountain lion, by safari search engine preferences is set to google, but when i enter a search term it defaults to bing. Only noticed this problem after downloading adobe flash player for what it's worth.
Is there a keyboard shortcut for switching search engines in Safari's search box (I believe Chrome had this feature before they got rid of the search box in the latest version)? The arrow on the left-hand side is cumbersome.
Hum I dont know how or why this changed havent told Safari to change it. is there a way to set it back to safari? Only thing I have downloaded is Makethewebbetter for a plug in for facebook dont think that changed it (its a app for elfyourself)
