View 2 RepliesI have a folder where I place an ever growing collection of my favorite songs. Before I switched to Mac, on Windows, when I wanted to revisit songs I most recently added to the folder, I would sort the songs by the Date Modified and it would order the files I placed in the folder by date.
In OSX, however, there must be a slightly different meaning to "Date Modified," as it does not quite sort my songs by the order they were added. It gets some of it right, but there's plenty of files that are out of order--tune "x", which I know was placed in the folder a week ago is actually listed further down the list with songs placed in the folder months ago.
Is there a way to have OSX sort files in order of the date it was placed in a folder? Neither "Date Modified" nor "Date Created" works 100% as I thought it would. Or is the OSX definition of Date Modified/Created slightly different than Windows?
I am looking for a command to create a .zip file with todays date of /Library/Caches/
What is the command for creating a .zip file with date in Terminal?
I spend a lot of time to change the date taken of my trip as my daughter camera was out of date, now I want to sort every thing by date the option on (Finder / View / Sort by / Date Created) is not highlighted so I cant sort by date created, How can I sort with this option?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I right click a folder I have dragged to the Dock I get the option to sort by "Date Added". This is super handy and I would like to be able to do it throughout the Finder but I can't find the option anywhere. Please note: I realize there is Date Created and Date Modified, these are not what I'm wanting to do, if a file was created and last modified a year ago, but added to a folder five minutes ago, I want to be able to sort the folder contents so that the file just added appears at the top of the list. (As they do in Stacks.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to import iPhoto Events into Aperture through Aperture's built-in function (File->Show iPhoto Browser). But the Events are sorted alphabetically instead of by date. I can't figure out how to fix this. On a couple of occasions I've opened the iPhoto Browser to find it sorted by date, so I know it's possible. Was it a fluke or is there a workaround?

View 6 Replies View Relatedhow to sort files and folders by date. As all this data is from the last 5 years naming them alphabetically (jan 09, feb 10 etc) was not working. create names numerically yy/mm/dd. While this works I have many folders, sub folders and sub sub folders and it gets somewhat confusing at times. Is there some alternate solution so that I can name folders by month and year alphbetically and force Finder Column view to show me the list in the way I want ( such as Jan09, Feb 09, march 10, april 10 etc)

How do I get Aperture's built-in iPhoto browser to sort iPhoto Events by date? Over the last year I've switched from iPhoto to Aperture. I prefer iPhoto Events as an organizational scheme, sorted by date, so I am re-creating a chronological scheme with Aperture -- as many do. I've been gradually and selectively importing hundreds of iPhoto Events into Aperture Projects by dragging them from Aperture's built-in 'iPhoto Browser'. Here's the problem: Aperture's iPhoto browser shows Events, but they are annoyingly sorted alphabetically, rather than by date. This makes it a real pain to transition chronologically.
I can't find any control to re-sort by date. Inexplicably, on a couple of occasions I have opened the Browser to find it sorted by date! Temporarily rejoicing, it soon reverts to alphabetical after one session. WTF? I have a hunch these couple times were flukes, possibly having to do with iPhoto being open at the same time, I dunno. Still, I now know it's possible; and if it involves some weird workaround to re-create it, I'll do it. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8, Aperture 2.1.4, iPhoto 7.1.5.
Is it possible to sort all the messages in my inbox by unread status and then by date?Â
That is, I will have all of my unread emails at the top, but then the first read email will be my most recently received one?Â
At the moment, sorting by unread status means that the top read emails are the ones that have been forwarded/replied to, and then the most recently dated ones.Â

I am using a script that Jacques Rioux kindly helped me out with a couple days ago. I altered his script a little to complete a different task I needed to create a shortcut for. The script below first creates two folders (TIFF & JPEG) and then it sorts files with an extension .tif into the 'TIFF' folder and files with the extension .jpg into the folder named 'JPEG'. This works great but I would like the script to effect multiple folders. Can anyone help me add to the script so when you click it, a prompt will pop up allowing you to choose multiple folders to apply the script too? As of now it will only work on one folder at a time.

I can't seem to figure out how to create a chart based on the following info: I have 3 columns: Date, Time & Value Looks like this:
Date Time Value
10/1/09 12:00am 35.5
10/1/09 01:00am 33.4
10/1/09 02:00am 17.5
.
.
10/2/09 12:00am 27.4
10/2/09 01:00am 44.5
10/2/09 02:00am 3.5
.
.
10/31/09 12:00am 56.5
10/31/09 01:00am 15.7
10/31/09 02:00am 10.4
I want to create a chart that shows the highest given value for each day (regardless of which hour it occurred) and another chart with the highest given value by hour. In the above sample the chart would show:
10/01/09 56.7
10/02/09 44.5
10/31/09 56.6
12:00am 56.5
01:00am 44.5
02:00am 17.5
I am able to do this in excel very quickly by using a Pivot Chart, but can't seem to figure this out in Numbers.
For some reason my iCal (in 10.6.4) refuses to let me create an event that occurs on or happens during October 10, 2010: 10-10-10.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering how I can sort by file type? I have a bunch of .moi and .mod files in a directory and want yo delete the .moi files. If I could sort by type, then it would just be a matter of highlighting those and deleting. I tried sorting by kind, but since they are seen as Unix Executable files by the OS, it sorts them but not by .moi or .mod.Â

I'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.
One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.
In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.
I would prefer seeing all my folders at the top.
Is there a setting that controls this?
The Apple info says use pop-up menus to select search criteria, but where is that? I wish to have the folder show all documents bigger than a certain size (ie. video) appear in the folder. My next question, is can I then drag to the Trash from that folder and know that they're deleted from their original location. I assume appearing in a smart folder is like an alias, its not reall copied to this new location.Â

Sorting by name works fine in icon only mode, but whenever I switch to Column mode its completely disorganized. And when I tried in coverflow mode its alphabetical but in inverted mode (Z to A).Â

So in windows I can create a file list, save it to a text file, and create a .bat file with rename commands for each file. for example:
Rename 000055-060409232023-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000055.jpg
Rename 000056-060409232020-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000056.jpg
Rename 000057-060409232016-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000057.jpg
Rename 000058-060409232012-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000058.jpg
Rename 000059-060409232008-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000059.jpg
Rename 000060-060409232004-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000060.jpg
Rename 000061-060409232001-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000061.jpg

how do I create a file list and then create a way to batch rename in os x? I know the commands, but I don't know of a way to do it on more than one file at a time. I have found a few renaming apps but they all appear to be focused on just iterating up instead of renaming specific files to a new name.
How do I check the real date of file creation in Mac OS X.
All files, I receive (mail, ...) have the created date, when I copied them in their respective folder.
I can't seem to find a way to alter the creation date of a file. I have a project and mid-way through I copied everything into a new file to test something out. It's in a different format so it's impossible to simply port it back to the original file.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an automator script I made myself that I use constantly. When I run the script one of the steps takes a screenshot and saves it as a PNG file. When I run the script again, it replaces the old PNG file with a new one. I would really like it to save the PNG file so that file name begins with the current date at the beginning of the name. Meaning the PNG file would be named something like "6/23/10 screenshot". Is this possible?
I'd be almost as happy if I could at least get it to simply make a new PNG with any random filename just so long as it doesn't overwrite the old version. That way I could simply look at the date created column in the finder and get the same info.
I have files with no creation date or creation date 1969, etc (came from bad settings in camera).
Since I knew the date, I was able to easily fix it via touch:
touch -t 20090110 IMG_1023.JPGÂ
This used to set creation, modification, and access time to 20090111, in Snow Leopard.  However, I can no longer do this in Lion. It does set modification and access, but creation date is still screwed up.Â

My question is how to handle the difference in creation date between the paper document and the scanned file. The paper files are from the past 50 years, but of course the file creation date of the scans is the date of the scan. How can I reconcile this? Ideally I would like to make the scan metadata creation date of the PDF/A the same as that of the original paper file creation date.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly big photo library in iphoto 09 and I am wondering if there is an option to save information like location, description, date etc to the actual picture file. The reason I ask is because when I went to export some pictures it didnt save any of this information whatsoever and with 4000 photos thats a lot of work to go add all that information back to. Anyone else have experience with this?

Normally, a Folder "Date Modified" does not change unless the folder itself changes (name, etc). Is it possible to "force" a Folder "Date Modified" timestamp to change when an enclosed file is changed/updated? I want to look at a folder and know the date/time of the latest enclosed file/folder change. This is especially important to me when using syncing apps as I want to visually see by a folders date that a sync has occurred (the actual file change may be deeply nested within the folder.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI found a utility that allows me to copy a file's location to the clipboard, but is there a way to create a link to a file location? I'd like to be able to send co-workers a link to files or folders on shared servers, so they can just click the link and get to that location in their Finder. I seem to remember doing this with Windows. Can it be done in OS X?
