OS X :: Backup Mac And XP Machine To Same 1TB USB Hard Drive?
Dec 5, 2009
I have a Macbook Pro OSX 10.5 and a Windows XP SP3 machine. I would like to backup my Mac using Time Machine to a 1TB USB Hard Drive, I would also like to backup my Windows XP Machine to the same drive (I'll probably use Acronis or something similar for Windows). Is this possible? Will the Mac still backup ok? Do I just need to create 2 Partitions on the drive? If so, what filesystem should it be?

Is there a way to make a backup of your Time Machine backup on a 2nd hard drive? I want to be doubly sure that my data is backed up!Right now I get an error saying that the second hard drive isn't authorized to copy my Time Machine data from the original hard drive I have set up as my Time Machine.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I was thinking of getting an external hard drive for use with Time Machine. On Amazon I found a Seagate 1.5 TB unit for $129. However there is a similar model "for the mac" for $192. I am wondering if the cheaper unit would work, or if the one for 50% has some indispensable feature.

I may need to take my new 27" iMac in for a replacement and only have with me a 250gb usb hard drive. I have used 182gb's of space on my iMac as of right now. Should I be OK for this one back up? While on the subject, what size external back drive should I be looking at?

Time machine only backs up the changing files in Mac. I want to use Time machine so it can back up my drive completely. From my music to pictures, to Apps to settings. I have a Case sensitive structure and I am about to format it to a non-case sensitive. And I want to back up everything. Is time machine a program for me?

I'd like to add a backup HD to my Mac Pro. Not with the intention of doing a RAID set up, but rather just for Time Machine. The two drives in my line of sight are the...
WD Caviar Green 1T
and the
Hitachi Desk Star 7K1000.C
I know there's the Caviar Black, as well,, that has a 5 year warranty as opposed to each of the above's 3 year. But I hear its on the loud side, and since it won't be running much more than every other week I don't see the need for the added performance. But perhaps the 5 year warranty alone is worth it. I'm also aware that the Caviar Green will spin at 54K, and that Hitachi is at 72K. Again, the intent and purpose is to be that of a backup HD.
I have a friend that works in Google's server R&D department that swears by Hitachi (based on their excessive testing standards). But I have no experience with Hitachi. So I'm looking for a few more real world stories on what you all are currently experiencing. My main concern is which will be the least problematic over the long haul. I am not interested in Seagate's, nor Samsung's.

I am doing a backup prior to my first ever format & reinstall. Time Machine will not allow my use of this external hard drive that I had previously used for a Time Machine backup . Time Machine says, " The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended ( journaled) Format, which is required." how do I change it to Extended (journaled) Format?
Yes the external hard drive in question is meant for Mac.

I also have a partition on the drive in the MacBook for windows and would like to use the external as a backup for that as well. Do I have to format the external and partition to backup each OS? I am new to the whole backup of info with an external harddrive.

Can I setup time machine to backup an external hard drive if I have another external hard drive? I don't have any files on my laptop but on an external hard drive. Or will time machine only work on files in the internal disk.

I was backing up my computer today and apparently my hard drive filled up in the middle of the back up so I got a notification telling me that Time Machine had deleted an older back up to make room for it. I need things that are on that back up...is there any way to recover it?

I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

I have an airport extreme base station. I was wondering that if I buy an external hard drive to backup wirelessly with time machine, will that external stay on all the time? is there a way to control when the external powers up and down? or does that depend on the make and model of the external?

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive. I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list.I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see.

Recently this external hard drive I have spun down right in the middle of a Time Machine backup. It ended up freezing my Mac for a second so I turned it off only to have it come up saying it was corrupt and needed a format. I did that and it seemed to work fine only to see it would never eject (it had nothing on it but it claimed programs were using it) so I was forced again to shut it off without ejecting.
This time I turned it back on and it didn't (and still doesn't) appear for about 15 mins.. now SL says "Can't be read" and when I go to disk utility it just shows the drive (no volumes, everything like partioning and erasing is all greyed out)

I'm trying to backup the contents of my MacBook Pro wirelessly to an external hard drive that is connected to a Mac Mini in my living room. All the tutorials I've read say to create a sparsebundle file with the same name as the one that's found in the folder of your Time Machine backup.

I am backing up my data from my mac book pro for a second time. I plug in my external, and it says it doesn't have enough memory to back up my computer. I have 1 TB hard drive and used about 650 MB for the first back-up. Obviously I don't have enough to back up everything for a second time. I just want to back up the new stuff. When I go to exclude the current external from the new back up, it's grayed out. Do I have to delete the contents of the hard drive and re-back up the entire computer?
