MacBook :: Keyboard Not Working After Cleaning?

Apr 20, 2012

Earlier I cleaned my Macbook keyboard with a wet wipe, brushed over the keys (pressing them down whilst doing so). Firstly when I went to go back to using my MacBook the trackpad at first decided to use right click only functions, after a bit I managed to get this working fully again. However the keyboard did nothing but work a bit but the keys not doing the functions they were assigned to do. So I rebooted and tried to login but couldn't because the keyboard wasn't functioning resulting in me having to get a USB keyboard to sign in. For a while the caps lock light worked, but now has completely died and doesn't work even when pressed on the USB keyboard. The keyboard is still active as occasionally when I go to try and use it for example a key that doesn't actually control the brightness ends up controlling the brightness?

I've run diagnostic checks and it's all been passed. Absolutely no idea what's going on? If I have to reinstall Lion i'm more than happy to do so but i'd rather not if I don't have to? Perhaps I damaged the keyboard itself when going through all the keys pressing them down? Although it's pretty unlikely the liquid from a wet wipe could get in right?

Jan 1, 2010

Recently I was cleaning my Unibody MacBook with an alcohol based cleaning product.I was cleaning my Keyboard, upon after about 30 minutes later my shift key stopped working. It appears some of the cleaning product has gotten itself under the keyboard?About 2 hours after, the shift key started working again, but later my F1, 1, Q,A,Z and F11, F12 and Delete keys stopped working? After this I unplugged the machine and put it on the radiator Too late? Perhaps.Today I powered it on again but still the same keys stopped working, though the shift key still works.I've connected an external keyboard to type this up. I bought this machine about November 2008 with only the basic warranty.

MacBook Air :: Rev B Keyboard Cleaning?

Jan 25, 2010

I would just like to ask whether it is worth the effort to take apart my MBA rev B myself to try and clean under the keyboard (I have a number of keys that are loosing clickyness and it's starting to affect the typing) or sending the whole thing straight to Apple and let them sort it out (I can't really afford to send it in a week like last time (for hinge issue) which is why I was considering doing it myself. I was thinking of cleaning the top as well. My MBA has a hard life. Since I was digging around in there do you all think its worth replacing the CPU gel as well? My MBA JUST about runs youtube, it stutters with 480p sometimes (won't run 720p without lagging horrifically and certainly not 1080p). Temps are about 60-65 C just web browsing, msn, skype and iTunes, and run into the high 70s mid 80s while watching flash. Everything else works great : ) (except 1 screw fell out the bottom).

MacBook :: Keyboard Acting Weird After Cleaning?

Aug 29, 2009

I just tried cleaning my keyboard/macbook with some baby wipe type cleaners. Great job of cleaning off the macbook but now when I went to boot the machine...the keyboard was all screwy... for some reason it thinks that when I'm just simply pushing down one key, it assumes the command button is being held down... sometimes it thinks that multiple keys are being held and I'm trying to string together an apple command.

my question is this....

1) are there any methods that I can try to fix the keyboard with?

2) I don't have applecare any longer on my macbook, does this mean that Apple will not be able to help me with repair options? does apple by chance take old computers that are broken and give you some sort of credit towards a new one?

3) can I sell this macbook on eBay and possibly get a decent ammount of money for it even with the keyboard issues?

4) AM I JUST SCREWED!?

MacBook Pro :: Super Drive Cleaning - With Cleaning Disc?

Jun 18, 2009

I have the dreaded " unexpected error occured. (Error code 0x8002006E)" problem.

Basically it doesn't want to burn DVDs ( fine on CDs though ).

I've read various ways to fix this such as zapping pram, SMC reset etc. and none worked. I also read that a cleaning disc might do the job.

So my question is, are these discs safe in a MacbookPro machine? And as I recall these discs have little bristles on one side - which way up should they go ( facing up or down )?

Hardware :: Cleaning An Aluminum 1243 Keyboard?

Dec 5, 2009

I had a very minor Mountain Dew spill several weeks ago, and I thought nothing would come of it. As time progresses, several keys are losing their effectiveness. Some sugar has to be in there gumming up the works. The keys that don't work the worst are "p", "'", shift and enter, right around my liquid spill. These keys have extra physical resistance, and once pressed, they send the right electrical signal, so I'm very optimistic that a Q-tip and a little alcohol will fix me right up.

I don't see any screws on my A1243 thin aluminum keyboard that came stock with my 3GHz 24" Merom iMac. Does anyone here have experience taking them apart or cleaning them?

Hardware :: Methods For Cleaning The Apple Aluminum Keyboard?

Dec 24, 2007

After having purchased a wired Apple Aluminum keyboard, I noticed there were no screws or rivets. So I did a quick search and discovered that glue was the main binding agent, and that disassembly of the keyboard is nearly impossible, well, you could disassemble it, but it most likely would never see the light of a caps lock key again.

So, to all of you that are the proud owners of either the wired or wireless versions, what is your preferred methods of keeping this baby clean?

So my friend was using his MacBook and went to do something else. He came back and the screen was black, he hit space and nothing, tried the trackpad and nothing. He restarted by holding the Power button, and it go to the log-in screen, but he can't type anything, or use the trackpad. He has tired restarting several times and no luck. He also tried an external Keyboard/Mouse and that didn't work.

He did plug in a Flash drive and the light turned on, so the USB ports are at least getting power, but nothing is working.

OS X :: Keyboard Stopped Working / Restore Back To Earlier Version Of Keyboard Firmware?

Feb 28, 2008

Yesterday I had a Leopard software update which included new keyboard firmware. I did the update and the keyboard continued to function normally. This AM I booted my MacBook Pro and discovered the keyboard no longer responds to inputs. However, the MB does responds to an external USB keyboard.

Now I don't know if I have a sudden hardware problem or the MB keyboard is not working as a result of the firmware update. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Can I go back to the earlier revision of the keyboard firmware?

Hmmm - while writing this I just realized I have a bootable image of my system made a few week back on an external drive - I'll have to try it.

MacBook Pro :: How To Get Keyboard Working Again

Mar 19, 2012

About ten minutes ago, I noticed that whenever I'd type something, the "y" key would start randomly inputting in the middle of the text.  I walked away from the computer to put something away and I saw that the "y" key was pressed multiple times.  It looked like this: "So today I went to the yyyyyyyyyy" Soon after, the "m" key started to fail, then the "u", the "j" and now the "7".  Sometimes if I press them repeatedly, symbols will come up, or if I press the "m" key, it will type " cxkv." This is a MacBook Pro, the smallest one, bought December of 2011 as a Christmas gift.

MacBook :: How To Login If Keyboard Not Working

Oct 19, 2010

About a month ago, I accidentally spilled water all over my MacBook's keyboard, the mac was turned on, and I notices the keyboard wasn't working correctly; one time before that, I was taking a bath and I had my macbook in the bathroom for music, when I went out and tried to use it, the letter "p" on the keyboard wasn't working correctly, I just turned it off and a couple hours after it was working perfectly!

So I did the same thing this time, let it dry for some hours, and it didn't worked, then let it dry for several days and it still doesn't work! So I removed some keys and try to clean the keyboard with comp air and it didn't worked still. I want to know if there's a way i could log in to my macbook without having to type in the password, like using a remote keyboard or something, please, i love my macbook and i really need to use it for homework! (I study high school and need to record edit, etc music, videos and pics!)

MacBook Air :: Rev.A Keyboard And Touchpad Not Working

Nov 9, 2009

My wife's macbook air (rev. A) just developed this weird problem. She is putting MBA into sleep mode on battery, and the next time when MBA wakes up from sleep mode, the trackpad and keyboard does not work at all. She restarted the MBA and nothing has changed. Luckily the logitech bluetooth mouse and the usb port is still working. We are running OSX leopard dual boot with Vista ultimate 32 bits using bootcamp. But because the "option" key is not working, we don't know how to boot into windows. It is only 8 month old and we have bought the three year apple care. However, she is in China now, I am not sure if the warranty service there is as good.

What do your guys think the problem might be and what should I do about it? She don't have a superdrive with her and if we want to re-install OS, we don't want to lose the windows partition.

MacBook Pro :: 5TGB Row Not Working On New Keyboard Also

Mar 16, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz, 3 GB 667, running 10.6.2. Last week my keyboard started acting up, the first thing to go was the "M" key, the key would "work when it wanted to" so to say. This was a little frustrating, but it would come around after typing around the key (on the keys near the M) and I could complete my work. Just one day later the "T" key started to act up at the same time, and shortly after that the entire 5tgb row was working "on and off". I bought a replacement keyboard and carefully installed the keyboard. For 2 days the keyboard worked without a hitch, but now my problem is back, the M key no longer has any issues, however the 5tgb row is starting to work less and less. I want to think this is some sort of connection issue from what I am reading, however it is a "heat" issue as well.

The keyboard will work fine for the first 10 min the computer is on, and then it slowly starts to fade away on me working "on and off" or as it wants to. I have read as much as I could on the internet, however most people I found with problems were due to spilling etc. I have not spilled any liquid on the machine. One thing that I will note is that the motherboard was replaces about 4 months ago by a company that I have had very good luck with, iresq, they had the board replaced because the problem was a known issue with something in the machine, I didn't ask many questions because they got it done for the cost of shipping. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone got any idea's for what to test or replace on the machine to get it working correctly? I am at a loss as if it is a connection issue I would believe the mother board would have to be tampered with.

MacBook Pro :: Backlit Keyboard Not Working On It?

Feb 23, 2012

I have a MBP on OS X version 10.6.8, the mid-2009 model. The problem: I can't get my keyboard to light up. When I press on the F5 and F6 button I see the image of the keyboard light pop up on the screen but it has a line through it telling me I can't do it. These feature worked a couple days ago, and I didn't change any settings since then. I have tried everything. I made sure the settings were right and reset them. I have tried to update my software which told me I was up to date. I have put my laptop in a pitch black room. I have covered the sensors. I have done an SMC reset as well as a PRAM reset. None of these things worked. I did download the LabTick app, which then I was able to light up my keyboard but I don't want to have to use a 3rd party application. I would like to have my keyboard adjust automatically. I have uninstalled LabTick.
