MacBook :: Change Printer Settings For Faster Printing?
Mar 29, 2012
We can't figure out how to change our printer settings to print in draft mode. The system only allows for standard mode which is very slow printing. Our HP Office Jet 4680 allows for draft mode printing.

I have had my MacBook Pro now for a little over 2 yrs and I was very frustrated I could not change any print options in any application. I know that the Triangle button expands print options screen but when I do, I have only two print choices. It gave me Standard or Page Attributes in Office and any other App it is Standard and Last used settings. I can't print in Draft, Best or other setting because it does not even give them as a choice. I have two high end color photo printers, Canon i9900 and Epson Photo series and an old HP830 series. Any app I tried to print from and the same thing. I tried to capture the options on the choices but it would not grab that part of the image but here is my screen shot. I searched many forums and I still get the same answer so something else is not letting me change things so I figured best to ask since I am a 20 year win user now switched to Mac. Well right after I posted this question, my wife found the answer. I never though to check the application NAME in the print setting screen. Example, in the screenshot I am using Preview. I never thought to hit the up/down arrow next to the Preview label and wouldn't you know, that is were the quality and several other settings were. I felt pretty stupid that it took 2 years to figure this out but if I posted the answer maybe someone else will not have to take as long as I did to change their print quality!

I wondered if it was in anyway possible to print wirelessly from my MacBook. Seems simple enough right? Well, the thing is I don't have a wireless printer. It's a normal inkjet Epson and it's connected via USB to my desktop which is running Vista Home Premium. Is there anyway I can somehow forward the document to my desktop and it'll start printing? Oh yes, my router is standard, it doesn't have any USB ports. Also anyone know any wireless HDDs? Time Capsules rather pricey especially in the current climate.

I'm trying to connect my leopard macbook to a Canon Pixma MP210 that his hooked up to an XP machine. Sharing is enabled in XP on the printer and I can successfully add the printer to the mac in system preferences. I've downloaded the proper drivers from Canon's website and selected them for the printer. The problem is that when I try to execute a print job, the print queue comes up and hangs on status "printing."
Also, on the XP machine, the print queue recognizes a job is being requested but the status hangs on "spooling." The document never actually prints. Finally after a couple minutes, the print queue in the mac has an error stating: "Error Number : 311 Printer is in use or an error has occurred. If an error has occurred, eliminate the cause of the error."

I have a Windows XP Desktop with a Epson Stylus S21 connected to it with bonjour downloaded onto it. Using the step-by-step guides, I've managed to connected my MacBook Pro to the printer over the system and have managed to print. The only problem is, when I do send a document to print from my MacBook it only prints out a blank page with nothing printed on it. I know that the two are connected as I can send things to print, and it's not an issue with the printer as my desktop is able to print fine.

My Macbook recognizes the IP address of the network printer on the network I'm on here at the church I work at, but I cannot print to it because it requires an authentication track. When I click file>print in an excel sheet or a word document the print screen comes up. In the drop down menu where it says "copies & pages" there should be an option for an authentication track or number, but there is not. It is simply not there. There actually should be a lot more options but there are not. I simply have a few, scheduler, summary, layout, etc. What can I do to get to the point where I can authenticate to print on that printer?

I've got a four year old Macbook Pro 17", running 10.5.8 OSC, 2.33 ghz, 3gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram.
The power cord was unplugged, although the battery was fully charged. I plugged in my Canon printer for the first time in over a year. It printed half a document, then the computer shut down. I pushed the power button and got the start up chord, but then it shut down again. Tried this a few times. Then I unplugged the printer and plugged in the power chord. it started, but it's very slow, and I keep getting the pinwheel.

Q1: how can I delay printing? This was possible in OS9.
I have a thermal printer wich permits me to change the ribbon (Black, CMY, CMYK). If I have a mixed type of files to print, I'd put on hold (in the "print" window) the files that requires the unloaded ribbon while waiting for the other to print.
Of course, I can print all the CMYK, wait until it's done then print the B/W ones but I don't find it practical. Or I can also rush to the print center and hope to have the time to suspend manualy the ones that need it.
Q2: Once a printer is created, how can I change the associated ppd? This also was possible with OS9.
Q3: It is possible to change the printer name once it is created?

We have a 2007 white MacBook. It's connected to an HP all in one color laser printer, but we also want to connect a second laser printer. We've tried both an HP and a Samsung, which the boxes said were compatible but when hooked up and we try to print we keep getting a Printing Stopped message, even when we click on "Start Printing".

I have been trying everything I can think of to get 2 PC's on our home network to print on my Canon MP610 which is connected via USB to my MacBook Pro and the two PC's recognise the printer and add it as a device but when I try to print, the message "access denied, unable to connect" is displayed. If it's of any relevance, I cannot get the PC's to access the Public folder on the MBP over the network either.

I have already done this successfully with one PC laser printer using the built-in OS X System Preferences utilities. I have tried the CUPS method. I do not know what uname/pword combo it wants. There is only one account on this machine and no password. That combination is unacceptable to CUPS. Give me this info and I'll give CUPS another shot. Through the OS, when I get to the step of selecting the driver from the list, the driver is not listed even though. I just installed it with the original driver disk from the mfr. Is there a way to get the printer driver I installed to show up on the list of available drivers I am offered? My other printer was in the list, connected just fine, and I can print to it with no problems.

Being the only Mac user in my house -however streamlined it is-, does hold a few problems. I have set up my iMac, and have happily joined my Windows home network, file sharing does work easily and neatly but as I found out the other day, printing from a Mac that is connected to a Windows based network can be very difficult. So for a long time now, I have been trying to set up my iMac (connected via WiFi) so that it prints over my home network. The printer; an EPSON TX100 is connected to the USB port in a Windows XP desktop and I have set up Printer sharing. The desktop is connected to my D-Link G604T.
I have added the printer through System Pref: Print & Fax:+:Windows tab: 'network':'computer':'printer' and have tried using both the Generic Postscript driver and the specified printer driver.
When I go ahead and print, the printer icon appears in the dock and then quickly disappears without a printout. I have replaced the ink and paper but still no luck. I have tried the methods suggested on some other threads, but none have succeeded. I would be happy to provide any extra information and try anything. Networked printing works with all Windows computers in the house including a NEC laptop, so why wont it work with a Mac?

I have always used Postscript laser printers to print EPS (vector) graphics - eg from Illustrator or Quark. We recently added to our network an Epson colour photo inkjet printer.
Much to my surprise, I just successfully printed straight from Quark a document that included some text and a (resizeable) EPS graphic. This was from a PowerPC in Classic running OS 10.4.11. A further document with a series of differently sized EPS graphics printed correctly too. There is AFAIK no Postscript engine in this printer.
I now rather gather this may all be down to the post OS 10.4 operating system which is fielding the print file and interpreting it - thus causing my photo printer to successfully do what I thought impossible.
Is there no need ever to buy a Postscript printer again? (The printer is an Epson PX730Wd - US name Epson Artisan 730.)

I recently bought a 2009 Mac Mini and now I need a printer. I've been looking at Canon and HP. Can anyone recommend a good quality printer, under $90, has cheap ink, and is a All-in-one printer? I will mainly use the printer to print reports and pictures.

Got a iMac running OS 10.6, and am wanting to print from a Samsung ML-1710P printer connected via serial port to a XP PC. Everything seems to all be communicating with each other, except I eventually get a print error on the XP machine in the print manager. Can anyone help with this?
Notes:
- the computer and printer can be seen by the mac.
- when a print job is sent, the mac spools and sends it "ok"
- the XP print manager status changes to "printing" then after about 1 min changes to an error.
- the latest driver for that printer is installed on the XP machine.
- I have tried to use the Generic Postscript Printer driver, the Generic PCL Laser Printer driver and an old Mac OS10.3 driver from the Mac end. There are no newer drivers available. I have shared this successfully printer before, but only from another windows machine.

Not sure that this problem is with my Mac or not, but suddenly my printer stopped printing and a window opens that says that the printer is "off line". I unplugged the printer and rebooted the computer and re-plugged the printer in thinking that might cure the problem, but same message came up "printer off line". The printer shows up in the finder and I am at a loss as to a possible cure without having to buy a new printer.

I was trying to set up my printer (HP 1515) so that I can print to it even when I am not on the LAN, but also using WAN. The airport extreme has now been set up for Bonjour and all that, but the HP printer is connected using an Ethernet cable, NOT USB. It seems the Airport printer sharing is made for connecting a printer to the Airport USB port, and NOT for any ethernet printers.
Is there any way I can print from outside - WAN - to my LAN printer, connected via ethernet to my airport?

In System Preferences > Print & Scan, double-click a printer and click on the Printer Setup button. Under the General tab, in Snow Leopard it used to list the printing protocol / url used to connect to a printer. In Lion it doesn't show that information anymore. Is there a way to still find out what protocol the print queue is trying to print via?

I am trying to connect to a windows network printer through my MacBook Air. I can connect to the printer via the windows network and can send documents to print. The document goes through to print but at the last second it says there is an error. When looking on the network windows computer, in which the printer is installed, I can see the document has gone through to print using the printer dialogue box for microsoft, but it details there is an error and the document doesn't print.
It seems that they are connected but there is still an error. Both Windows and Mac computers are up to date currently and the printer is a HP Deskjet F4180.

I recently reinstalled my operating system (OS 10.4) from the original system disks in a vain attempt to stop a problem with Mail (it has started demanding my password repeatedly before it will send any mail). I then had to download and reinstall all the various upgrades since.
Since then it no longer recognizes my Epson SC740 printer. It won't let me install the driver from the original CD - it comes up with the error message "You cannot open the application 'Installer' because it is not supported on this system."

I just bought a Toshiba satellite laptop with Windows 7 and am trying to set up my printer. I have a Canon Pixma MP500. I'm using my airport express for the router. I have no trouble connecting to the internet. It works perfectly. The problem is trying to get my printer to work with the airport. I've tried creating a new port with the ID address but my printer does not show as an option. Of course I can't find the installation cds (figures!). I have been able to add the printer under the local printer, but then I have to go back into the set up network/blue tooth option and it recognizes it. But then when I try to print it says that something is in the print queue blocking the current printing, but there is nothing there.

I had the above printer connected to my old and newer computer. I got another printer and decided to sell my 7350. Nothing was wrong with it and I just got cartridges for it. I sold it for $20 and later that day the woman who bought it from me told me that for some reason she could not get the printer to print right and sent me a picture where the text was blurry and unreadable. Her laptop recognizes the printer and I told her to clean the cartridges, print a test page, etc. and still the printer is not printing well.

So I've set up (or tried to anyways) a network between my MacBook Pro & iMac through a Time Capsule. My iMac is connected through a cable and the laptop is wireless. The printer is connected to the USB port on the T.C.
Here's the scoop, I can connect both computers wirelessly on the network no problem but the printer is not recognised by the iMac whatsoever. Now I know I could probably disconnect the cable on the iMac and it would probably recognise the printer but is there a way to fix this issue and leave it connected by the cable?
Both computers back up to the TC w/o issue, I don't see why the TC cannot facilitate printing via a cable since it obviously communicates to the computer w/ Time Machine. Is there a setting to fix this? I have to admit I'm kinda new to setting up networks and working w/ them.

I have an HP 8000 hooked up with a USB cable. I've tried disconnecting everything, restarting, trying different ports, nothing is working. I also tried resetting the print system in system prefs, reinstalling the drivers as well. When I try to print the printer just sits there. Its always stuck on sending print data. I don't use this printer often but it used to work and I would get this problem once or twice every few months. I solved it just by restarting but now it wont go away.

I'm looking for a printer with the following:
- Color
- Has automatic two-sided printing
- Works well with OSX
- Small footprint is a plus, but not a dealbreaker
- If it has a scanner that would be nice, but not required
- I don't really care about WiFi printing
I'm going to use the printer mostly to print out reports and long pdf documents. I don't really care for photo printing.
