MacBook Pro :: Why Hard Disk Always Showing Full (OSX Lion)
Apr 30, 2012
I'm using a MacBook Pro 13" running OSX Lion, why my hard disk always showing full? I never store any movie and music file on this mac even is my working file like AI, PSD file i store it in a external hard-drive. Hard disk always not enough space?
i have this strange issue that occured just out of nowhere without me (knowingly) having contributed anything to it.yesterday i launched my iMac and my external firewire drive wasn't showing up in neither the finder nor on the desktop. i instantly thought about a hard drive crash, but soon tried other things to evaluate (or not) my guess.Â
for instance, i unplugged the drive waited a few minutes before i plugged it in again. since this iomega drive is also equipped with a regular usb port i also switched cables and tried connecting it via the iMac usb sockets as well as via an usb hub without any luck. the drive still won't show up. so i launched the Disk Utility, to see if the drive needs some checking/repairing, but to my surprise it wasn't showing in Disk Utility either.Â
thus far i only considered this to be an issue with only this particular external drive, but when i eventually switched on a 2nd external drive (this time an usb drive i use for Time Machine) that drive also refused to show up in either the Finder or the Disk Utility app.Â
curious as i was, i then fired up a 3rd and 4th external drive and now had all 4 drives running at the same time. none of which were showing up, just as if they weren't even connected with the iMac.Â
this strikes me as more than odd. i've heard about hard drive failures and crashes. they just occur over time. maybe and under some very strange coincidences it is possible that two external hard drives quit their jobs at the very same time, but seriously .... 4 of them?? i hardly think so.Â
well, maybe it's the iMac's usb/firewire controller that's causing the trouble, i thought. but then again, my other connected devices (iPhone, iPad, Printer, Scanner, eyeTV) are functioning and get detected just fine as far as i can tell.Â
i have no idea what's going on. i dismiss the idea of 4 external drives having crashed all at the same time just as much as i don't think that the iMac's usb/firewire controller has got any issues. re-formatting any of the 4 drives is out of the question and even if i'd consider such desperate measures, the Disk Utility wouldn't let me re-format anything anyhow, because the drives aren't listed there. i wish i could just use my Time Machine to resolve the issue but, as i mentioned earlier, i can't access the Time Machine because it also won't show up.Â
I ran omnidisk sweeper and it shows I only have 39GB of used space. However, when I check the info on the startup disk it shows that I only have 300mb-5GB left depending on the day. I have deleted all unnecessary files that I can. I can't really find anything else to delete. I only have a couple programs installed that are pretty basic like word and excel.

I am running OS X Lion on my startup disk is full. I checked my storage in the about this mac window. 49.72GB of my HD space is taken up by Other. Also in Disk Utility under the partition almost the entire rectangle is light blue. I am worried that my MacBook is to old to run the software. I use my machine to run Adobe CS4. The error turns up when I run Photoshop so I am unable to run the program at all.Â

I just switched from Oultook 2011 to Lion Mail. I have 2 different accounts, Office 365/Exchange 2010 and iCloud. I noticed that when I reply to any message while is full screen mode, the reply icon is not showing up. The reply icon is the curved arrow pointing left for replies.
I recently was editing a project and this message popped up:Â "The hard disk where your library is located may be fullor unavailable or permissions may have changed. To avoid losing your work, quit Final Cut Pro."Â I proceeded to quite Final Cut Pro, but when I re-opened it moments later the project was no longer listed under the Projects tab. Â I had been working on this project for several months and it had been saving without a problem until today, where now it appears to be completely gone.Â
I looked in my finder and the project still exists under the "Backups" folder, but for some reason it is just not showing up in Final Cut Pro. I've recently updated final cut to the latest version so I wasn't sure if that had something to do with it.
I turned on my iMac (20in 2008 model) and after the apple logo appears, I get a gray screen that says "process 1 exec of sbin/launched failed". I'm pretty sure it's because my hard disk is full. I tried booting up in safe mode, but my wireless keyboard battery died. I put in new batteries, but I need to get to the desktop to reconnect the keyboard. I tried using a usb wired keyboard, but it doesn't power up until I'm on the desktop screen. I don't know what else to do. I need a keyboard to boot to safe mode, but I need to be fully booted to work the keyboard.
I have taken everything off my desk top and backed it up and it's still saying the same thing! I've also emptied the trash. I get it when I try to use Photoshop.
I have a Hitachi Touro USB 3.0 1TB external hard drive that has always worked on my Macbook. Formatted in FAT so it would work on both my PC and Mac. I can't remember exactly when it stopped working, but I think I had to reset my mac once as it stopped responding and the HDD was plugged in. After that it stopped showing up in Finder, but still appears in Disk Utility. It also shows up in Storage under "About This Mac". Â I've tried resetting my computer, ran Apple Hardware Test, and have tested the hard drive on other computers and it works fine. Just doesn't show up in Finder on my mac!!

Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full. When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive. I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space. Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back. That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.
My startup disk is full. When I look in information 'About this Mac', I see that this disk is almost completely filled with 'Other' (173,43 GB!°. And I cannot find out what 'Other' might be! clean this 'Other' and make memoryspace available ?
I keep getting error messages saying my startup disk is full, so I delete a bunch of things, look in about this Mac, it says I have multiple GB available and then over time they disappear and I get the error message again. earlier today I had 8 GB, they all disappeared, so I deleted a big iphoto album and got a new 13 GB, now 45 minutes later it is down to 10GB....

I have a mac book pro...one of the older models...around 5 or 6 years old..the silver one with the silver around the screen part. Running Mac OS X 10.6.8,
2.33 GHz, 2GB ram.Â
Lately my computer has been rediculously slow with everything, but aside from that my issue is with my start up disc. I would have over 1.5 GB of space left, open up a photoshop file...make some alterations and save...and all of a sudden I have NO SPACE left. These alterations created the photoshop file to be like 50mb more. Its a 200mb file. So how can I go from 1.5 gigs to saving a 200mb .psd file and all of a sudden 0 hd space?Â
Sometimes I couldnt even save the .psd because when I opened it all of a sudden I have half a gig now. And even if I had half a gig why wouldnt I be able to save? I go to save and sometimes it says "your start up disc us full" - Is this different than my harddrive?Â
Is photoshop using some sort of weird caching thing?
I was going to run Disk Permissions and when I opened it up, there is a decrypted file.dmg showing. Here is it's path:/var/folders/2d/vmlqi1 d0gzcs7mxi nnl 1w0000gn/T /decryptedFile.dmg...I opened it and saw that it has something to do with installing Adobe Flash Player. I remember downloading and installing it a couple of days ago. I've adonw this previously, but never had the disk image show up in Disk Utility before. How can I get rid of it? It seems to be in a folder calledl "T" that I can't find anywhere.

I just purchased a Macbook and immediately upgraded to Lion. As a result, my laptop now says that the startup disk is full...it's 95% full of "other." I don't have anything else on this computer yet beside Microsoft Office. How do I get my memory and storage back?
I just cleaned out my HDD on my 2008 MBP and am still getting about the same amount of available space as I did when I started. I must have cleaned anywhere from 50-150GB of stuff from the hard drive and no space has been freed up. I ran a scan with my trusty Daisydick which has never let me down and it showd what I thought to be a very much more accurate amout of free space now but the system says otherise as dones another scanner. Also I cant seem to figure out for the life of me what this extra 99GB of "other" space is. Below is a link to the screenshot I took. I really try to keep things very light and tidy on here.
I have been using iphoto with my nikon d5100. I just changed from shooting in basic jpeg form to trying to shoot in raw.and then my computer started acting up. and no matter how much stuff I get rid of it keeops saying that it is full...
I want to decrypt a full drive because I want to use a encrypted disk on Macintosh operating system like Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard. If lion does not support decryption method then give me full specification about hfs+ journaled encrypted.
I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.
