MacBook Pro :: Mbp Is Makin Harddisk Malfunction?
Sep 2, 2009
I baught a refurbished mbp a year ago... The keyboard lights were not working, so I took it to a mac store. I live in kuwait so there arnt any official mac stores just authorised reslellers (who btw are rippin peopl off with profits over 100%) anyway so they told me that the hard disk was not working!
I told them that I just baught the mbp and it has to be working! They fixed it or something and returned it to me with no charges.A year later my mbp decided to use the malfunction card it stoped working. All I'd get when I turn it on is a white blank screen and a mouse cursor.I took it to a shop to fix it. He told me the hard disk isn't wokring and cannot be fixed. He replaced it.A month later instead of a blank screen I get a blinking folder. I take it back to the shop and he says the new hard disk malfunctioned again, so he replaced it.week later blank screen I take it to the shop same problem hard disk needs to be replaced.Keep in mind that by shop I mean multiple mac associated and non mac shops, I took many opinions b4 accepting that my harddisks and the info on them were indeed lost. Now I am thinkin my mbp is causing the hard disks to malfunction! Is that posible?

My wife and I both have had a mail problem that has come up intermitantly for over a year. It's happened on both Snow Leopard and Lion; on our desktop, my MB Pro, and my wife's MB Air. About once a week our mail server (AOL) rejects the password, giving the following message:We use the correct passwords, but it keeps rejecting, with this error message continually popping up. When this happens, I go to Aol.com and check my mail. The password always works, and the messages are all there. So there's nothing inherently wrong with our web mail accounts, and our passwords are right.Sometimes the problem will last a few minutes, other times several hours. And then, for no apparent reason, we open our Mac Mail app again, and it works just fine.

I have been having a number of issues with my unibody MBP for a few months now. I find that after using it for a while, the trackpad and keyboard start to malfunction. So far I have cleaned the hardware as there appeared to be some dust and debris between the internal battery and trackpad, but unfortunately this has not fixed the problem. I have also discounted any software issues, having cleared the hard drive back to stock.
From further research I have seen that the batteries can swell (design defect?) and cause these issues. It seems to occur when the hardware gets warm during use, and having looked at the battery, it is slightly swollen and misshapen.
As it appears to be a manufacturing/design defect, is it possible for Apple to replace the battery? Unfortunately I'm not located close to an Apple Store.

My Macbook seems to have a life of its own it wakes up by itself when the harddisk is sleeping. When I leave the computer open but the hard screensaver is on or the harddisk is at sleep it often wakes up by itself. Also when I go to sleep at night and I close down the screen and the lid there are sounds as if the computer wants to wake up and this often goes on for up to 15 times in a row.I then have to shut down the computer and disconnect all together. This is really enoying as I am afraid the harddisk will get harmed during the night.I have upgraded to snowleopard and after that this problem started.I did leave my computer to a apple service shortly after I changed my harddisk there after my old harddisk crashed in november last year. But they could not find any problem with my computer.I really would like to now what´s going on.

I really thought apple would have a much lower rate. My friend thinks this can be attributed to the white macbook line. They are apple's best seller and they are plagued with issues of cracking, and screen issues. what do you think?

I bought a MBP13 with a 250 GB. I noticed that the HD is a Seagate 250 GB 5400 rpm.
So i thought I would upgrade it to a Seagate 500 Gb 5400 rpm(Momentus).
Now the noise is noticeable. Not much, but you can hear it.
Should a 500GB harddisk be more noisy than a 250 Gb? I thought it would be the same. The only difference I saw between the two harddisk is that the old HD had a Apple logo on it.
Otherwise its the same brand and model, just with a higher capacity.
If I had upgraded at apple would I have been rid of the noise or is this just something that follows along with the higher capacity?

125 GB of my MBP 320 GB harddisk is used by "other files".
Only through OmniDiskSweep have I been able to at least identify my real user files and delete some not needed files to keep the MBP operational. I only have about 160 GB of real, accessible user files (i.e. fotos, music, documents).
The rest which eats up my hard disk apparently files automatically created by Apple software and not accessible via the finder. I hardly find this user friendly at all!
how to reduce these "other" files safely!

Anyone having trouble with Hardware replacement due to stop of manufacturing?I went to the one and only Apple Store in Hong Kong today and after they have checked my Macbook Pro which I bought in 2007. They said my logic board is malfunctioning and there are no spare parts anymore, also there will be no parts manufactured of the Logic board for my Macbook Pro.So due to Apple's policy I am doomed to buy a new lap top as there is simply no parts to fix this Hardware problem What can I do? I expect to have bought a good product but eventually due to a Hardware problem I am stuck and FORCED to buy a new lap top. I really feel up set as I don't have any options offered besides a Apple Care plan!! But that's useless when I don't have a good running Apple Macbook right ?

I have a Mac OS X (silver iMac) and starting this morning it will not let me login to my account, which is the single and only account, and the admin. I shut it down last night as usual, and it did so just fine, and it boots up the same as well.
My keyboard, however, is screwing up. Buttons like the "return", "shift" and "control" apparently count as characters, and since my password is a series of dots I can't tell how it's malfunctioning. I can't login at all.
I've tried restarting the computer several times, unplugging it and replugging it, and changing which USB port the keyboard was plugged into. I've also tried typing one key over, on both sides, just to see if it would work. I have no idea what's wrong here - does my computer have some sort of virus? Or is it my keyboard? Is there any way I can reset my computer, or just manage to login? I'm really stressed out here, and willing to listen to anything.

I recently got hired into a Tech position and inherited the current iMac machine running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (now updated to .4 build). I was in the process of De-Personalizing the machine from the previous person who worked in this office, but when I proceeded to try and install some important updates for Final Cut X and entered my Apple ID and Password, I was given an Unknown Error dialog box. Hitting OK I then noticed the 'Unknown Error (4), please try again later' dialog box. This is rather frustrating.
I was wondering if the reason it is not working is because the versions of the programs where purchased under a different Apple ID (the previous employee who worked here).

Anyone uses Convert on the Dashboard? The Currency convert has been not-working on my computer for a while. I'm not sure if any others noticed the problem. Basically, it doesn't convert to the right number... It even gives me different values when I put in the same currency on both sides of the equal sign.

I have just bought a Samsung 500GB SATA 5400rpm 8MB Cache Laptop Hard Drive and put it into my old MAC mini, the only problem is that the Disk Utility cannot see the drive at all. I have also tried df -hl but that cannot see it either.
If I connect the drive to a Windows PC it says that I have to initialise the drive using an MBR or GUID Partitioning.
I'm assuming that I have to use GUID partitioning for the MAC? But how do I do this inside Leopard? Do I have to take the drive out and initialise it using Windows?

I've continuously seen "IOATAController device blocking bus" these days. After googleing, I found this message might be an indicator of disk failure. However, using Disk utility didnt give me any error at all. So, how can I make sure there isnt any damage in the harddisk?

Two days ago my MacBook (OSX10.4) crashed; VLC player froze when I was watching a tv show. I though 'no biggie, happens now and then' and hard-resetted my 'book. Tried opening the file again with Quicktime, again, computer froze up. Waited a couple of minutes, hard-resetted my laptop again. Only this time, the screen got stuck on grey/lightblue-ish screen during boot-up.
Tried a lot but couldn't get my MacBook up and running again. Started up with the OSX cd popped in and went to Disc Utility. Mac then told me there was a 'Invalid Node Structure' and that 'The volume could not be repaired'. During a third or fourth start-up this changed to Mac saying there was a'sibling error'.
I checked some sources online, figured out this should be something fixable. One possible option was Disk Warrior. Supposed to be *the* tool with problems like these. I replaced my malfunctioning HD, put an old HD in my MacBook, reinstalled OSX and put the malfunctioning HD in a stand-alone case and connected it too my MacBook. As we speak DW is busy rebuilding the directory but it has been doing so for over a day now. I've read online that it can take a couple of days though. My HD is 250Gb with 30Gb empty space when it went kaput.
Now, there seem to be a couple of other alternative options. These lads talk about Tech Tool Pro - apparantly some other program that could help: [URL]
Then there's a couple suggestions/methods mentioned online that either involve booting up in single-user mode and type some code [URL]
Has anyone ever had their HD act up like this? Any experience/recommendations regarding the programs/methods mentioned above? I'm pretty new with Mac (used PCs for ages, switched to Mac quite recently) and I'm kinda at wit's end here :/. I was in the process of backing up my stuff, but there's a boatload of data on that HD that I hadn't archive yet.

The AirPort on my new iMac 21.5'' 4670 is having problems these past couple of days. Every time I put the machine to Sleep and wake it up again, the AirPort cannot find any network. My wireless is fine and there are other wireless networks the machine can detect when it functions well. I have to restart the computer to have the AirPort work properly again. I thought it was a temporary issue, but after repeating a couple of times, it seems to be very easily recreated. And sometimes the AirPort does not function even from a restart. I have to restart another time to have it work.
Does anybody else have the similar problem? I hope it's just a software problem that will be addressed in 10.6.2.
(I posted here because it never happened on my other Macs before.)

Is it possible to make CD image and copy it to the harddisk and mount it as though it was a CD - so that programs requirering to read from CD would know?
I have some software (legally purchased!) that I use frequently and I would like not be required to carry the CD with me all the time - plus my PB is noisy when accessing the CD compared to the harddrive.

noting the diff which is speed, type of ram, graphics card and harddisk. My more impt factor is the graphics card. Is the new Nvidia 9400m better than the old ATI card? Not sure which to get... how to balance with the new machine with the price....My assesment is that... the diff is about $100 or even equal if i upgrade the old model to 4gb ram. So, is the ~$100 diff justifiable to get the old one cos its $100 cheaper but get a better graphics card? Or pay $100 more to get the new model with a bit slower CPU, lousier graphics card but double the hard disk and DDR3 ram compared to DDR2.

So last December my laptop got smashed and everything works except for the backlit screen. In fact I can still use this laptop it is just extremely hard since the screen does not light up. The person that smashed it ended up buying me a new laptop so I have this beat up (and I mean the shell is destroyed) laptop with quite a lot of functioning parts.
Now a few weeks ago my girlfriends Grandad spilled a beer on his brand new 2010 Macbook. The logic board is shot so it is almost cheaper for him to buy a brand new laptop.
Would it be possible for me to take the logic board out of my 2008 Black Macbook and put it into his 2010 White Macbook?

By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?
From:
[URL]
The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?
From:
[URL]
Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.
Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

I have a 2008 13" white, plastic MacBook. Its a bit slow, but adequate. Thinking of selling it and paying the difference to get the 11" MacBook Air. I've heard it is similar in speed and has the same processor.
The main problem I have with my current MacBook is that its heavy - I need something lightweight to easily carry to school and class for note-taking and such.
How is the Air better or worse, and would I be losing anything significantly by replacing the 08 plastic MB with a MBA?
