I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9 and use time machine to back it up to an external USB drive
Can I simply install the new drive and use time machine to restore to it if absolutely nothing is on the new drive?Â
I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?
Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt's not paranoia, it's just being a computer user long enough to see damaged drives. I'd like to backup my Time machine drive, but I can't. Neither using my backup software, Chronosync, nor simply manually, just drag and drop from the origin Tima machine to the destination (time machine backup). Time machine is a backup, so I'm doing a backup of a backup. I had my time machine drive failing once, so I want to have this extra protecion.
This is the error message I get when I want to drag and drop the "Backups.backupdb"Â folder, which is where all my Tima machine bbackups are:Â
"The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled." I'm the only user, in Admin level. When I get info from the folder it says "You can only read".

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.
As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.
When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?
4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

1. Put ssd in a external hard drive enclosure
2. Connect the external SSD drive to MBP
3. Back up the entire OS and files with time machine
4. Remove the enclosure, take out ssd
5. Put SSD in mu MBP, replacing HDD

My new Macbook is only 1 week old, so there is not much (or any) useless crap that I don't want or need. The Macbook came with a 160Gb hard drive. Prior to switching to Mac I was a 4-year Linux user. I purchased a new 320Gb drive for my Linux-PC laptop just 2 months ago. I took that drive out and would like to put it in my new Macbook. I would prefer to transfer data from old to new drive rather than starting fresh all over again. So I assume Time Machine is the way to go, and/or use Migration Assistant. My question is how Time Machine works, exactly.
In Linux when you do a backup using Partimage, it backs up byte-for-byte, meaning that if you back up a 100Gb drive, it will restore that same volume size regardless of how much bigger the restore drive is. Put another way, if you buy a 150Gb drive and restore, you will end up with a 100Gb drive with no space left over. I want to avoid this! So how will I backup and restore, and at the end have a 320Gb drive, rather than another 160Gb drive? Will I have to install the OS on the new drive before I restore? And yes, I do have an external hard drive I can back up to, though I haven't used it yet.
I have a MacBook and will be purchasing an external harddrive to backup all my info from OS X. I also have a partition on the drive in the MacBook for windows and would like to use the external as a backup for that as well. Do I have to format the external and partition to backup each OS? I am new to the whole backup of info with an external harddrive.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm going to be swapping the 250 GB drive in my 2008 MBP Penryn (17) for a Seagate Momentus 500/7200rpm drive. There are two ways to go. One is to put the new drive in an enclosure and use SuperDuper or CCC to clone the main HD and then swap them. The other is to use Time Machine. That means installing the new drive blank, boot from the OS disk and format. Then go to the most recent TM state and restore. My available external HD is the FW800 Western Digital Studio. It has space for a partition big enough for the cloning. The case coming with the Seagate is the Other World Express USB2. I have good pdfs on the install procedure. Need to remember to print them, first.

I have an external hard drive upon which I put movie files that I view through a Sony box (like the Roku box). I brought my MacBook in for a repair and connected the same external HD and used Time Machine to make a back up. It did reformat it in order to do so, but since the Sony box isn't a pc or mac I didn't think it would make a difference, but now the Sony box won't recognize HD. Is there a way to reformat it on my MacBook so that I can use it on the Sony box again, or do I need to reformat it with a Windows computer? I had no issues when transferring files only and using the Sony box.

I installed a new 500 GB HD on my 13-inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro (since the original crashed). I successfully connected to the Disk Utility via the internet connection and started recovery from a recent Time Machine backup....but, the computer will not restart. It's been stuck in the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating status bar all night. I shut it down and restarted, but it won't go past the grey screen state. I can't find any answers on the Support Page. Should I have first installed the Lion OS X first and then restored from the Time Machine backup? Â
Also, wondering if all my programs (2011 ILife & IWork and Microsoft Office) will be reinstalled with the back up? (I can't find my installation disks for ILife and IWork :-()

I probably have all kinds of misconceptions about Resetting to an earlier time for the computer I have. It's a 2009 macbook, running OS 10.8.5. I got it last week, previous to this machine I have been running a powerbook G4. It does not have a backup with Time Machine either.

The computer is up and running but at osx 10.5.5 and I noticed my color profiles have not migrated over so I'm guessing other things haven't either... My AT&T card is also encountering a "fatal error" while trying to connect so I can't even get online to try to update. What went wrong? What should I do? I did a TM bck up right before the HD swap.

My iMac has about 1TB of space while my MacBook has about 500 GB. Since I'll be using my iMac primarily as a external display I was thinking about also using it as an external harddrive so I can backup my data from my Macbook via Time Machine.Is this ok to do?
