MacBook Air :: Lenovo External DVD Drive And Migrate Using Time Machine?
Apr 26, 2012
Will this work if I plug this (or any other third party DVD read/writer) to a Macbook Air? Also, if I purchased a new macbook, can I migrate all previous settings/files from my Time Machine?

today I bought a 7200rpm 500gb seagate hard drive. The installation went great. reinstall of osx went great. The computer is up and running but at osx 10.5.5 and I noticed my color profiles have not migrated over so I'm guessing other things haven't either... My AT&T card is also encountering a "fatal error" while trying to connect so I can't even get online to try to update. What went wrong? What should I do? I did a TM bck up right before the HD swap.

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I am thinking of selling my macbook pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz) and buying a new one. I really don't want to load all of my software and settings, etc. and was wondering if I could just use my time machine backup for the new machine to basically pick up where I left off with the previous machine on the new machine?

I would like to get your feedback about any of these machines if you have tested any of them by any chance. I myself enjoyed using the Vaio TT a lot and it felt very fast in doing everyday tasks. The screen is very crisp and it does not suffer any lines or light bleeding like the MBAs screen. In addition, the keyboard is dead silent compared to the Air's! Please keep your Vista sucks comments to yourself and try to judge these machines based on their performance, specs and looks and simply forget about the OS for now. I am kind of sick of waiting for a problem-free MBA screen so I might consider one of these machines (mainly the Vaio TT or Lenovo X200) to be my on the go machine since the OS isn't going to matter much on the go even though I would still prefer Mac OS any time.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I am not too tech savvy....Am I supposed to keep the external HD plugged in 24/7 in order for Time Machine to work? Is it going to damage the HD if it's constantly being plugged in?

I have a MacBook and will be purchasing an external harddrive to backup all my info from OS X. I also have a partition on the drive in the MacBook for windows and would like to use the external as a backup for that as well. Do I have to format the external and partition to backup each OS? I am new to the whole backup of info with an external harddrive.

I have an external hard drive upon which I put movie files that I view through a Sony box (like the Roku box). I brought my MacBook in for a repair and connected the same external HD and used Time Machine to make a back up. It did reformat it in order to do so, but since the Sony box isn't a pc or mac I didn't think it would make a difference, but now the Sony box won't recognize HD. Is there a way to reformat it on my MacBook so that I can use it on the Sony box again, or do I need to reformat it with a Windows computer? I had no issues when transferring files only and using the Sony box.

I probably have all kinds of misconceptions about Resetting to an earlier time for the computer I have. It's a 2009 macbook, running OS 10.8.5. I got it last week, previous to this machine I have been running a powerbook G4. It does not have a backup with Time Machine either.

How do I migrate my back-ups to a MB-Air? The disk doesn't show up only the Macintosch HD icon following the steps.

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.
When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?
4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

I just got a new MacBook Pro for graduation. I've decided to use my iMac as an external display and use my Macbook Pro as my main computer. My iMac has about 1TB of space while my MacBook has about 500 GB. Since I'll be using my iMac primarily as a external display I was thinking about also using it as an external harddrive so I can backup my data from my Macbook via Time Machine. Is this ok to do? Does anyone advised that I don't? I just want to make sure I don't screw up anything before doing so. BTW I also have a WD external harddrive connected to my iMac.

I recently sold my mini and my ministack, but before i did i took the last 4 time machine backups. I stored this image on my gf's imac, in hopes that when i got my new macbook i could restore everything i had on the mini onto the macbook. So, on her computer, i have xxxxx.sparseimage, i enabled sharing on her computer through a local network, and shared it. When i get on the network, i can drag the file to the desktop, go in and see all my stuff. Ive tried everything through the network to try and migrate it, with migration tool, but it'll just start migrating her computer. i have another external HDD, am i going to have to format it and move the backup to it, then from it to my macbook? can i get a bridged usb-usb cable and just yank it off her computer? does anyone know what im talking about?

I'm still fairly new to the Mac world. I know I wouldn't want to take an Windows image of a hard drive from a dell laptop and restore it to an Hp desktop or any mis-matching like that due to hardware and driver differences. But I was wondering if it is OK to use my time machine backups of my Macbook Air and restore that to an iMac that is on its way. I am actually selling the Macbook Air once I have the iMac set up and running smooth. I could easily copy my documents, pictures, etc. And I could export my bookmarks and settings with Firefox, but I would prefer to not have reinstall all the apps I have, all the plugins in Firefox, and all the settings I have the way I like in OS X.
So I am looking for advice on the best method for migration to a different computer. Is Time Machine my best bet?

I've got my external hard drive set up with Time Machine on my 13" MBP w/ Snow Leopard and I need to upgrade the laptop already for my school courses (awesome ). When I get my new MBP, is it possible to plug in the hard drive with my previous backups and migrate everything to the new Mac? Will it appear as if my computer has just grown in size overnight, or do I need to manually transfer everything over?
The hard drive is USB, I read somewhere about transferring all the files via Firewire but not USB, I'm guessing that's because of the backwards control you have with Firewire. (Not to mention slightly faster data rate).

I have suddenly had constant lockup trouble with my 13"MBP under Lion (latest version 10.x). So I did a complete re-install, including using Disk Utility to erase HD, then Lion. I have complete Time Machine Backups, however Lion will NOT list my TM external HD when migrating my data (both at initial startup and using the utility)! Why not? It is CLEARLY listed on my desktop, so I know it's mounted. I don't have to re-install every program, and info manually?

I want to be able to use it as a network time machine drive. Both laptops are running snow leopard. I was wondering is this possible and if so, how can I do it. Currently I am able to see the desktop and the external hardrive on my network from the macs, and I am able to drag and drop onto them, however I want to be able to use time machine.

I got my macbook pro yesterday and I am already loving it - I was looking for some advice on some accessories and things.
When I got the macbook with my student discount I got a printer for 20 from apple, as well as applecare for 3 years and a 18 ipod nano and a case/sleeve for when I have to bring it travelling.
1. I am at university/college and I was wondering what accessories you would recommend me?
2. I am looking at getting an external USB hard drive - for either my music and movie collection or for time machine.
What drive would you recommend? The apple one is too expensive, I assume any standard USB one will work though?
And is it possible to partition the drive, if it was big enough, and make like a 320gb partition for time machine and then have the rest for normal storage?
3. I know everyone says there are no viruses for macs etc. and stuff, but there is antivirus software available, which there must be a reason for? Is it wise to get antivirus software for a mac, or is it completely un-needed? I have also enabled the firewall.
4. Does anyone think mobileme is worth paying that much for? The guy in the apple store said it would be especially good since I have an iphone as well. And would it work with my gmail account?
Cheers

I have just set up an external hard drive to my wireless router and am now wanting to set up Time Machine to back up to the hard drive. I can see the hard drive in Finder and can even send files to it manually. I just don't see in setting up Time Machine any option to backup to that hard drive.
