I have a 2006 Macbook Pro. 2 Ghz and 512 MB. OS 10.5.7. I have a 80 GB internal hard drive. I was messing around with Linux on my Macbook Pro and managed to screw it up. So now my internal hard drive partitioning scheme looks like this: So 46.7 GB is for Mac OSX and there is 26 GB of free space. I would like to add this free space to the OSX partition. Is there any way I can do that?
View 9 RepliesI've installed and uninstalled windows couple of times through the Bootcamp. when installing the Windows 7, it asks to format the partition so that the Windows can be installed. My questions comes here, I also restored the partition couple of times for no reason and whenever I restored it, I noticed that the space used by Windows never gets added back up to Mac Partition. So does that mean the space used by Windows will be just floating around? To simplify my question: After restoring the Windows partition, the space used by windows, will it be added back up to the Mac partition(to 1 partition)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up
I currently have a small partition on my 27' imac allocated to Bootcamp which I now no longer require. I would like to remove this partition and restore the complete drive back to OSX without losing any vital info. Yes, I have done research on this however I remain a little confused. I would be grateful if someone would take the trouble to confirm that this is possible and, if they have the time, write a simple step by step procedure for me.Â

I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
I just upgraded my iMac's 1T HD to a 2T Hard drive. The time capsule was restoring the info wirelessly when I got the rainbow spinning wheel. How do I stop the process and start the restore process using a chord? I've been told I will have to re-format the HD?

I had my hard drive partitioned into 2, where one was mac the other windows xp. I received this macbook as a gift from my sister so i wanted to reformat everything into mac. I popped in the Mac OS x install cd and just installed it. Now there is two hard drives and I am not able to re-partition it where i can bring it back to one again...I was suppose to delete windows first before re-formating my macbook.

I know with every new OS on any device it needs to be beta tested to fix any bugs and I use my MacBook for quite a lot. Is it possible to partition my hard drive like you do when running Windows, and run OS X Mavericks AND OS X Yosemite? The reason I'm asking is because I don't want to be stuck with an OS that's going to prevent me from doing what I need to do.

View 5 Replies View RelatedNo big deal - I partitioned the new drive in Disk Utility, made sure it had a GUID partition scheme, then used Carbon Copy Cloner to zap over my OS X partition. Boot from new drive - it works but there is an odd pregnant pause on boot up before the machine starts actually booting. I always boot in verbose mode (I like to see all the UNIXy goodness under the hood), so I see about 30 seconds of grey screen before I get the scrolling white text of OS X booting.
Now I find myself wondering if this is because of the lack of EFI partition on the new drive - but Googling around t'interweb I'm struggling to find any definitive guidance on this issue or indeed, anyone else with precisely this problem. Any bright sparks on here have any ideas?
(as an aside, I've started to recreate my Windows partition - Boot Camp assistant is quite happy to create a Windows partition and resize the OSX one, which seems not to work based on what I've read if your partitioning is wrong)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded my macbook to snow leopard from tiger, and after opening an application I have to use yearly for work, I discovered that the program cannot function in Snow Leopard without a $275 update which my job will not pay for. Before I decide to either spring for the update or downgrade back to Tiger, is there a way I could use a hard drive partition to run two different versions of OSX? My concern is if I downgrade on any section of my hard drive it would downgrade the entire thing. Is there a way of doing this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo my mac's hard drive went out. So I bought a new one that is 160GB. I'm trying to partition it in Disk Utility, but there are a couple of problems I've run into. First, It's saying there is 1.2TB of space. I guess it's possible Western Digital put a wrong label on their drive, but that seems a bit unlikely, doesn't it? The second issue is that when I go to actually partition it, I get an error that says, "Partition failed with the error: input/output error". I have no idea what's going on, or what I should do
I'm using a Macbook w/ 10.4.11 (although strangely, that disk that came with my computer says 10.4.9, not sure how much of a difference that will make...). It is a 2.16GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, w/ 1GB of ram, if it helps.

I recently had my Macbook Pro (pre-retina, 2013) checked out by Apple and was told my internal Hard Drive has packed in. I decided to buy and fit a new one myself (£100 from Apple vs £40 myself!!!) so I purchased a 2.5" 500GB SATA Hard Drive and have swapped it with the old one. I am sure I have connected it properly (I've checked 3 times) and I'm sure it is the right HDD (I checked this at the Apple Store in town). I've been told to do an Internet Recovery (Command + R at start-up) and this works fine. When I get to Disk Utility, however, to format the new drive, the drive is not recognized!! It doesn't come up as one of the options, so I cannot select it to make a partition and format the disk. Â
I am beginning to think it wasn't actually the HDD that was the issue, rather something else like the logic board?Â

I just wanted to let people know about an experience I had the other day. After using my Powerbook G4 for about 4 years with some files encrypted with File Vault my Mac suddenly refused to let me log into my user account. I took the Mac to an authorized Apple repairer and was told that a file in File Vault had become corrupted and infected the rest of my hard drive. I lost all my files and documents, photos, music - the lot. When it happens, all you get from Apple is "Sorry about that, but there is nothing we can do - You should have backed up all your files".
I'd just like to warn people not to use File Vault.
I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a 17 inch MBP running Lion and Windows 7 with a boot camp partition. My mac side has 500GB of space, and my windows 7 partition has 250GB. Recently I shrunk my disk space on the windows 7 partition by going to Control Panel->searching "partition" and shrinking it, so now my boot camp partition has 132GB. However, I thought that space was going to be moved to my Mac OS X partition, but it didn't. Where is that memory space? It can't be flat out lost, can it? I also tried expanding it back but I can't click that option. I really do not want to lose those 118gigs. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but I really need it.

I have an external hard drive that I use to watch movies on a Nintendo Wii and some of the movie files are over 7GB, which means when I format the drive to FAT32 I cannot copy the larger files. What are my options for getting around this problem? I have VMware fusion but I cannot easily see my external drive in XP. Is it possible to format the drive in XP and then transfer everything via VMware on XP?

I need your help in recommending a suitable hard drive replacement. It looks like the "big drives" - those with over 128GB of storage space - need 48-bit addressing. Macs built before 2002 don't have built-in support for it. I assume I'm only going to see 128GB. So presumably, I'm looking for a drive with at least 128GB... but really any recommendation is welcome.
I have a Mac mini from late 2010 that I am going to try to sell on eBay. Wondering what the most effective way to wipe all the data on it would be. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". Partition failed with the error: Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed. Format: MS-DOS (FAT) --- This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work. I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from. Question # 1: is that going to be a problem? I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BOOTCAMP on there at all. However, I do HAVE to have that program. Like I said it didn't give me the option to choose Windows so I didn't know where to go with this. Any help with that would be awesome.
Size: 26.34 GB (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.) I connected the Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives. The first one went through fine. (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.) This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well. I then started the process with the BOOTCAMP drives. However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BOOTCAMP drive. Question #2: Is it because of the Format type I chose when partitioning?

All it lets me do is Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) or something like that if I recall correctly.
