MacBook Pro :: Monitor Won't Come Back On After A Bit A Time Away
Apr 18, 2012
So I've had a monitor hooked up to my MBP since I got it. But just recently when I walk away and come back, it won't come back on when I hit the trackpad or keyboard. It has become very annoying because everytime I want to use my computer now, I have to take the MBP off its stand, open it up then unplug my monitor and plug it back in, in order to get it to work. I then can close my MBP and put it back on the stand and continue using it. Â
I have shut off power saver and screen saver, but still no luck at getting it to work. I have no clue as to what else this could be or what caused it.Â

I'm an idiot, pleased to meet you.I had 2 external drives connected to my Macbook Pro, both had time machine back ups on...I meant to delete one of these but deleted the wrong one, and dragged it into Trash. On realising my mistake I tried to drag it back out of Trash, as you would normally but after "preparing to copy" for four hours it told me the drive was full...It's a 500gb drive, and the Time Machine back up is the only thing on it, so presumably it's just trying to copy itself when the back up is still present on the drive, albeit in the Trash.

There are a gazillion Time Capsule threads and my question is probably answered in one of them. But I've been skimming them and can't find it. Also couldn't find it in the Apple support docs. So...Does anybody know how far back TC backups go? Does it just hold on to the latest backup or can you go back awhile to recover your files? For example, if a file was corrupted six months ago, will I be able to retrieve the prior uncorrupted version of it - or just the latest TC backup version of it (which would of course also be corrupted)?

I run a small business off an Early 2008 MacPro (8 core). I mainly do PCB CAD work, and find that it would be useful to have a second monitor. I'm considering a Dell 24" or 27" model. I run a 4870 which has a DVI and a display port. I'm also considering another computer as a back up, as I had a video card failure in the MacPro that left me unable to work for a week until a new card arrived. My question is this: do I buy another old Mac Pro as a back up machine and get the extra monitor too or just buy a 21" or 27" new Imac and use it as the primary system with an extra monitor, leaving the 2008 MacPro as the reserve machine. The software I run is via parallels and will run on a low spec PC. But I do not want a windows machine. What do you think?

I have a mid 2011 MacBook Air 13 inch with a single Thunderbolt port. I have the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable which I am able to use to run a Dell 24 inch monitor - this cable connects to both the DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port and also a USB port on the Air. I want to be able to run this Dell monitor, and also run a Thunderbolt hard drive - one with 2 Thunderbolt ports. Is this possible? Can I connect the DisplayPort part of the cable to the pass-through Thunderbolt port on the hard drive, and then connect the hard drive to the Thunderbolt port on the Air? I would like to buy the Apple Thunderbolt display (which would solve this issue), but I suspect it will may refreshed soon. So I don't intend to get one until then.

Last couple of days my emac monitor will just shut down and go black, just like an old TV tube packing up used to. It won't return on restart, but did return a couple of times after I took out mains lead from side of computer, let it rest, then tried again. However, today, this solution didn't work, but a tap to the side of the computer did get the screen going. I've read a number of different possible explanations for what might be the problem - everything from battery, to airport card to it's terminally ill, get a new computer, so don't really know what to do. Don't want to go and buy a new computer if all I really needed to do was change the battery.

Safari suddenly goes slower and I want to set it back to yesterday. Is there any way to do that? Im starting to regret those downloads. Id really like to just set it back, but I have no cd drive, so reinstalling the OS is not going to happen.

I've been backing up my mac book pro using a WD passport drive and time machine but recently it stopped backing up and says "back up failed" when I try to back up. I can still access data on the drive but can't save to it anymore.

I just tried to back up my Mac Book Air and I use OS X 10.7.3. Â
I got a message which said that there was not enough space on my external hard drive.  The message said that I needed 50 GB and the external drive only has 43 of space... Note, when I check out the hard drive, it says: ""Available 43.63 of 249.93".Â
The sole purpose of my hard drive is for back up purposes. So, there isn't anything other data or information on the drive..

I'm getting a larger hard drive for my mac - and I have all my current data backed up on my external - however I also have a windows partition with a game on it that I no longer have the disks for so I was wondering if there's anyway I can carry that over to my new HD via time machine or any other method?

I switched on my UMB (late 2008), and when I logged into the desktop, there popped a message box stating, "date has been changed to xx/xx/2001 and applications depending on the date may malfunction"
When i checkd the "Date and Time" settings in the sys preferences, it was showin Jan 01 2001. Since it automatically updates the date n time frm apple server, it immediately took today's date n time and everything else is working fine now.
But, am curious about why this actually had to happen? I hadnt changed the date n time when i had shut it down last night. What could be the issue here? Is my macbook unable to remember date and time? or Something like BIOS battery is dead?

Will this work?

Somehow I completely deleted my app store, time machine and system preferences. I have read that updates should fill in those missing. It hasn't worked for system preferences. For the app store and time machine they only say unexpected quit. How do I get these working properly again?

I have a Macbook Air, it's 18 months old, and the keyboard is sporadically fail. I see no pattern. The A and Backspace keys are the main two to go, they fail at the same time, and come back at the same time.Â
System details:
1.7 GHz Intel Core i7
8GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB
Serial: C02KVGZKF6T6Â
I always keep the system up to date with software, I don't use illegal software, I can see no reason why this should be happening. I'm running Yosemite, latest updates always applied.Â
Tempted to perform a clean install and see if that works. I'd book an appointment but with Christmas so close no shops are accepting bookings and the phone proved useless.Â
Just thought I should test with an external keyboard to see if that also has the same issue. I'll do that.

I probably have all kinds of misconceptions about Resetting to an earlier time for the computer I have. It's a 2009 macbook, running OS 10.8.5. I got it last week, previous to this machine I have been running a powerbook G4. It does not have a backup with Time Machine either.

So two months ago my mac's internal hard disk had a problem, it was "ejecting" itself by itself. It was frozen. Problem: I was gonna do a backup the day it happened, so I didn't have a back up. I went to a centre of data recuperation. They managed to get a lot out of the internal hard disk and put it in a new external hard drive. Apple then replaced my SSD, and I restored (from the external hard drive) what had been recuperated back on my computer with a new SSD. Now I realise that a lot of things are missing - especially pictures- which is quite annoying. I do have a very old back up that I did with Time Machine on another external hard drive. My question is: how can I restore only the pictures from that back up? I can't go back on time machine because this is a new SSD, and I don't wanna restore everything from that back up as I have more data on my computer as it is now.

My Macbook Pro has been not updating, crashing applications, and force restarting. The problem has finally showed itself this morning. Finder crashed and when I tried to open it, I got a " Cannot open because file or application does not have a back up on time machine, and it is corrupted or incomplete (null)

I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.Â
Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.Â
Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.Â
I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files. I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available. I am considering replacing my G4 Mac mini, which is used primarily as a desktop. It turns out that my computer desk is very close to my Sharp Aquos LC32GA5U TV. With the right adapters, it should be possible to have my monitor and TV connected to the new Mac mini at the same time. The DVI/HDMI cable to my TV should be about 12 ft. I have some questions about a setup like this. Will a video cable of this length cause any issues? My TV will not be turned on all the time. Does Leopard recognize the fact that a display is turned off and prevent apps from putting their windows on it?
