MacBook Pro :: Blu Ray Drives - Rip Movies Through Handbreak?
Feb 3, 2010
If I get a USB Blu Ray drive, can I just plug it into my MBP and rip my movies through handbreak? I have around 70 movies on my hard drive at the moment, and i have around 20 blu ray movies that didn't come with digital copies. I would love to get copies of these movies on my hard drive, but obviously my computer does not have a blu ray drive.

My current setup: iMac i7 with 4 external 3GB drives daisy chained with FW800
Drive 1: Media - this is where I keep my itunes library and all my music, music video and TV show files (1.4TB)
Drive 2: Movies - this is where I keep all my purchased movies files (1.2TB)
Drive 3: Media Backup
Drive 4: Movies Backup
iTunes is set to "Keep iTnes Music Folder organized' but NOT to 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library'
Problem: Whenever I buy a new movie, it stores them on my media drive by defcult. I want it to store them on my Moies drive.

I love AirPlay. I use it on my iPod Touch the moment I get home to play music to my speakers connected via AirPort Express. I use it on my iPad too when i'm watching a movie..
Even on my MBP when listening to music from iTunes. But Movies in iTunes don't work. The AirPlay icon in a movie playing in iTunes only shows "computer" and doesn't show any other options.

I had a bunch of movies that took with my digital camera that were always imported into iPhoto when I transferred my pictures into it. I used to just be able to click on them in iPhoto and the movie would open up and play. Now it seems that my movies are gone and all that I have of my movies is the first frame as a picture and nothing else. Their file extensions used to say .mov but now are .jpg. I've tried changing the extension back to .mov but no movie is there and the file sizes are not what a movie should be.
I'm running Snow Leopard on a 13" Macbook Pro with newest version of iPhoto. I have quicktime X and Quicktime 7 installed.

I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...
Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.

I have a question regarding Time Machine functionality. Here's my situation. I have two hard drives in my Pro: one that operates as a Boot drive, and one for storage. Right now I have Time Machine set up to backup my storage drive, but I was wondering if it was possible to have plug in a second external drive and use it to back up the Boot drive. I searched for a similar thread, but couldn't really find anything. Has anybody successfully done this?

I have searched but I can't seem to find an answer to this question...
I have 4 x 500MB drives in my Mac Pro and 4 x 500MB external firewire drives.
Currently I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone each internal drive to it's respective backup. ie Drive 1 > Backup 1, Drive 2 > Backup 2 etc
Is it possible to use Timemachine in a similar way? so that each internal drive has it's own corresponding Timemachine backup?

I just downloaded a free trial of Aimersoft Dvd Creator. It seems simple to use to burn avi to dvd. However it seems like you can only use a DVD5 or DVD9 blank discs.
Are those the discs I need anyways to burn movies or is this program seem to be very limited on what disc to use?

I just want to play DVDs and video streams from the macbook pro through my TV monitorCan anyone suggest the simplest way to to this ? Some are telling me that I need to buy a costly "converter box" and like 5 other pieces of equipment (totaling close to $200)Am I correct that I will need a VGA to S -video cable ? If so, is this a simple purchase ? I've got the mac adapter but just need to know what kind of cable is needed to play video/audio from the laptop through the monitor.

I have in the past downloaded my movies from my Canon Legria FS21 movie camera. Now I went to download the movies and they won't.
I asked some Chinese people at the local Apple Shop, but their English is like my Chinese, good for general conversation but not for computer language. All I got out of them is that I can't download them.
The files in Finder show on the card as PRC001>MOV00A.MOD, MOV00A.MOI. The file name changes the last digit with each scene, but all have the MOD and MOI ending. Now I have no idea what that means. way of getting those movies into iMovie?

Basically I can't decided between the 11 inch or 13 inch Air and thats due to the fact of not having any idea if the 11 inch will be capable of handling the tasks that I need. I have a ton of 1080p/720p mkv movies that I always watch on my current early 2006 macbook, that's a must do for my upgrade to an Air. The second part of what I will be doing is having a dump site for my pictures.
I have a T1i and take a ton of photo's nothing professional or anything, but as a poorly touched hobby. I have been considering using iphoto/Aperture since its only 79.99 in the new app store. I am just slightly concerned if the little 11inch can handle simple aperture photo edits, to fix crappily taken photos. The ability to play my movies is the most important issue, the whole picture thing can be sorted out on the Quad core Pc in the office.

I noticed there is the thread on 'Using remote file to save disc space' but I think that is more complicated than I need. I am wanting to simply store my movies on my time capsule and then be able to watch them from my Air keeping them on the time capsule. I am not worried about accessing my files from somewhere else or anything like that. I am still pretty new to Mac OS but I thought I would be able to go to 'computer' and there would be a drive showing and I would just move it over.

I downloaded Handbrake in order to download movies onto my MBP, and then upload them onto my iPhone 3G. However, is Handbrake necessary to use simply to download movies onto my MBP that I will later watch solely on my computer (that is, not upload them onto my iPhone)? Or, is there software already pre-installed on my MBP that will allow me to download the movie (DVD) on my computer, without having to use Handbrake or like software? After uploading, what application will allow me to watch the downloaded DVD?
