View 3 RepliesI have a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 with dual Xeon 2.66GHz. One of my favorite apps on my Macs is iStat Menus for which I purchased a family pack. I am running latest version 3. However, when I added it to my Mac Pro I am getting goofy CPU temp readings. At idle I am reading about 60C on one CPU and 55C on the other. But then if I fire up all the cores (Handbrake for example) then the reported CPU temps DROP to about 48C and 43C (notice same differential of 5C between CPUs). All the fan speeds stay the same so it is not extra cooling kicking in. Seems to be reading the wrong thing.
I know with Intel that the CPU just reports the distance to Tjmax and then the software reading that number takes the TjMax reading for that particular CPU model and figures out the corresponding Tj. It almost seems to be what is happening is that iStat is reading the "distance to TjMax" and reporting that without doing the math. That would account for the reading working backwards I suppose.
I'm wondering if anyone with a unibody Macbook Pro can tell me what temperature categories show up in their iStat Pro dashboard application. I have never gotten ones such as Airport card and am wondering if it's just the application or something to do with my airport card.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a program to monitor my late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro's temperatures. Just a few minutes ago while playing music/playing an ONLINE game real briefly it warned me that my CPU temperature was too high. (167˚ F) Is that too high of a temperature? What should the "range" be?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBookPro5,4 2.53GHz with one fan and only the 9400M. After updating to 10.6.3 the operating temperature seems to have risen from about 43 degrees C to about 48. It has been getting warmer here in Japan so the ambient temperature is different but I still think this rise in temp. is due to the update. I have smcfancontrol installed and set to 2500rpm instead of the normal 2000, but it seems to be not enough to keep the temp. under control, as it did before the update. Any relatively hard use of the cpu and the temp goes up to 60 degrees.

I would like to upgrade my 17" Powerbook G4 to wireless n, but I'd like to upgrade the internal airport extreme card instead of using a PC Card adapter.
Are there any options for this? Will this airport extreme card from early model MBPs work?

17" pwrbk Hi-res
1.67 G4
late 2005 model: Powerbook 5,9
How certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought my Mac Pro as a refurb from Apple, but it didn't come with the wireless card built in. This didn't bother me because at my old apartment my computer was near the router so I just wired it up by ethernet. I just moved into a new place and my computer isn't within router distance and I don't want to run a bunch of cable. My boss gave me a card to plug into Apple wifi card spot and OSX found the card and showed some airport info, but it didn't find any networks and if I run the Airport Utility it says it can't find an airport card. So I assume it's not compatible. What are my options? Oh yeah, I found this on ebay. Sound reliable? [URL:....]
View 22 Replies View RelatedI was just adding some Quicklook plugins when my temps started to soar. I have restarted, repaired permissions, removed said plugins, and tried other accounts. Nothing is lowering the temps. Weird thing is is Activity Monitor is showing NOTHING using the processor nearly enough to jump my temps to 85 C with nothing running.
I'm "controlling" the issue for now by ramping my fans to full speed. Even with this I am hovering around 70 C...a good 10-15 C above what I am normally at (and was at 30 minutes ago).
*Note: Normally running fans at 6000rpm would give me temps in the mid to low 40 C range

Yea so, right this second, its about 75C according to istat pro. It usually gets this hot when I skype video chat, but right now all I am doing is ichat and safari. 75C is a lot, but is it too hot? It's burning my lap.

Last night I watched Netflix just fine, put my laptop to bed and this morning, no wif-fi connection!!. Blank airport icon reading "No Airport Card Installed." Recently installed new battery, not that that probably matters.Do you think my Airport Card died overnight? I have tried restarting twice and nothing. Other devices can connect to the wi-fi just fine.Staying tethered to the modem is a drag especially sinceI just forked over $130 for a new battery! I have a MBp-17 with OS 10.5.8, Mahalo from Kona Hawaii.

I have a late 09 Macbook Pro 13" with the latest 10.6 OS. For some reason every time I turn my airport card on or off the MBP ask for my system password (not wireless password) to do so. I can't seem to find anything online. I've done MainMenu's batch cleaning.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi just got my new macbook 2 hours ago. i came home to set it up and there was no "antenna" or "signal strength" icon on the top right in the menu bar. I went to system profiler and clicked on airport, and it said "no information available", so i assume there's not one installed. thats about my luck. ill be taking it back in the morning.

Apparently it was working fine up until a week ago, then just "disappeared from the top bar." Its a friends computer, so im trying to figure out what exactly he did. He had a verizon wireless manager app installed that was configuring the network connections itself, so i have since gotten rid of that.
I went out and bought the most powerful wireless router I could find with the hopes that I could get a good strong signal over at the house next door. The signal did improve but it is still not sufficent. Now I am thinking of installing some sort of anntanae at the house next door.

I transported my Macbook and when I set it up again it does not connect to the Internet and i get the message "No airport card installed". Does this mean the airport card needs replacing? It also does not read a USB stick.

MacBook, Was working
The Airport Card in my 2008 MBP 17" seems to work intermittently, sometimes when waking from sleep or restarting it shows up as "Airport Card not installed". Other times it will switch on fine. I phoned AppleCare (I have 3yr) and they made me reset the PRAM & SMC, which initially worked, but now it back to it's old tricks of not working. Not sure what to do, don't really want to send my MBP off for a week.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI just bought my first Mac from ebay i'm a new user and don't know much about macs, I was using my ethernet to surf the web until my belking router comes in. So this is what I have done so far my desktop is wired to the router running XP the connection is fine and my setup is a WPA, my macbook is running 10.5.6 Lepord my router says the MB is connected to the router but I'm unable to connect to the internet. TCP/IP is set to DHCP my airport says status on, and that it has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet I've already have my MB set to share web, internet, files & printers on my network. Is there something i missed or i'm doing wrong I called belking and got no problems with the router we used many setup changes and I ran a hardware test on my MB and no problems were found.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I'm working on my macbook pro (core duo, 2.16, sys 10.6.8) when I notice the battery is running down. I plug it in. Nothing happens, no lights, battery continues to drain. So I go online, when I get the great news that my laptop doesn't think that there's an airport card installed. OK, I try the brick in another magsafe type Macbook, it lights up fine. I try that laptop's power brick in my laptop. No lights, no charge.
This computer was working fine the day before. The battery only has 117 charge cycles.Never had an airport issue. I tried resetting the power thing, (SMC?) the pram, no luck. As far as I know, the computer was unplugged and sitting idle until I started working on it today, transferring some photos from my camera to the laptop.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an extra macbook (weird, right?) and an old xbox. The mac is a 13" Macbook 4,1. I want to put it in my xbox. I think I can do it but this is my first hardware mod and, to be honest, I'm scared. Does anyone see any immediate problems I'm overlooking? I chose the xbox because it can dissipate heat well and i need a tower pc, so i thought an xbox one would be cool. the challenges i can think of as of right now are:
1. proper spacing and mounting of logic board (so that nothing that shouldn't touch doesn't)
2. proper placement of airport & bluetooth cards (the xbox is sorrounded by metal, which will seriously damper any wireless connections)
3. properly mounting the Superdrive (the actual xbox DVD-ROM drive as the black xbox plastic part glued to the front. obviously, that's not an option with the drive built into the mac)
4. Finally, taking apart the mac without destroying any of the parts. Then putting the whole thing together without causing any static discharge etc.
Look, I'm a senior in high school, not a laptop repairman, but I really want to do this before I leave for college.
can someone explain the CPU info on istat for me.

What is the best and cheapest way to get an airport extreme card? I do not want to do it myself. I just want to know the cheapest and fastest way, because I don't want to spend to much time away from my baby.
