MacBook :: Overheating With Safari - Is It Normal
Jan 12, 2009Lately my year old macbook has been getting very hot when I watch videos on Safari. If I pause the video it cools down fairly quickly but this never used to happen. I looked at the CPU usage using Activity Monitor while this was happening and Safari was consistently around 100. Also, when I am on the dashboard CPU usage of inoRT jumps to over 150%. This does not seem normal.

I had a 11 inch air 1.4GHz/4GB/128GB for two weeks. I usually set the brightness to 75% and for consistent web browsing (no heavy flash) I can get about 5h15min battery life. I noticed someone here claiming 8+ hours battery on 13 inch so I decided to give it a shot.
I got a new 13 air with 1.86GHz/4GB/128GB yesterday and start to run on battery immediately. I was disappointed. The brightness was also set to 75% and I start to count the time from 25% while browsing MacRumors.com. And it only took 1h38m for battery descending from 25% to 0%. Again, pure web browsing and no heavy flash.
So here is my conclusion: On 75% brightness, 11 inch air's battery performs beyond advertised 5 hours and 13 inch's battery performs fair and normally should give you around 6h30m~7h.
Noise
I don't have equipments for measuring the noise, but while copying the same 10GB files from external drive to the machine, the fan noise from 13 inch is much louder than 11 inch.
Now I like my 11 inch more in general, although I really hate the 1366 x 768 screen. I don't know if I should sell the 13 inch or 11inch...

Oct 21, 2010To those contemplating on picking up the 11-inch MacBook Air or the 13-inch MacBook Air, I thought it would be helpful to list the differences between the two.
Below is what I've compiled so far (in no particular order):
1) SD Card Slot is on the 13" MacBook Air, not present on the 11"
2) Higher clock speed configurations on the 13" (1.4 GHz/1.6 GHz vs. 1.86 GHz/2.13 GHz)
3) 6MB of shared L2 Cache on the 13" vs. the 3MB on the 11"
4) 1066 MHz frontside bus on the 13" vs. the 800 MHz on the 11"
5) Larger capacity battery and an extra 2 hours of battery life on the 13" (7 hour 50-watt-hour battery on the 13" vs. 5 hour 35-watt-hour battery on the 11")
6) Slightly larger trackpad and more room for your palms while typing (hey, it's true!)
7) 16:10 1440 x 900 13.3" Display vs. 16:9 1366 x 768 11.6" Display
8) The 13" model weighs in at 2.9 pounds while the 11" weighs in at 2.3 pounds. .5 pound weight difference

OS X :: 32 Inch LCD TV HDMI Setup With 13 Inch Macbook
Oct 7, 2009I am trying to use my HD Sansui 32 inch LCD TV as a monitor for my Macbook. I can't work out how to set it up properly. My macbook is running OS X 10.5.8. My TV supports 1920 * 1080 HDMI 60Htz NTSC and various other resolutions. I am using a mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a HDMI lead to the tv. Problem one is that when I switch the Macbook on and close the lid nothing comes up on the TV screen (meaning it is supposed to only driving one screen, the TV). If I do this with the VGA connection it will. Momentarily the apple symbol will come up and the little circle below it but then my TV says signal not supported.
If I have the Macbook lid open when I switch the computer on both screens will work and I can select 1080P, however it is very grainy and not pleasant to read text. I think it looks better using the VGA. I have heard of people getting nice crisp display with HDMI so I am wondering if I am missing something? Is there any other software that can be used to get better results? Which text smoothing settings should I use? Are there other settings? I am using it on my desk so I guess it is about 2 foot from me. I will post my display details in a minute but my computer details are the following:

May 9, 2012I'm getting one for school and i'm going to have to carrying it aroound quite a bit, so the 11-inch seemed appeling at first, but then i noticed that there is a few pros to the 13-inch than the 11 inch: There's an SD card slot on the 13 inch, which i could care less about, the screen has higher resoulotion, which i don't really care about eiether, but the one difference was that the 13 inch has two hours more battery life, which kinda got me thinking towards the 13-inch. So what do you guys think, is it impossible to work on the 11.6 inch and should i go for the 13 inch, or should i go with the ultra-portability of the 11-inch?

Jul 14, 2009So whenever i am done using my book, i close it up and leave. when i come back to it the fans are on full blast and my laptop is hot. i open it up and its a black screen and you have no control. i have to hard shut down the macbook and restart it. It also does this when i put it in sleep mode and then leave. anybody have any thoughts.

Oct 20, 2010What could possibly make a macbook pro overheat before it is even booted? I have bootcamp installed so I can run solidworks and a few misc programs in XP. The machine always runs a bit toasty for my liking under windows so I use smc fan control to crank the fan and then reboot into XP pro. This works great as long as I dont need to sleep the computer and re-open later. In this situation the fans dont resume the higher speed I specified and I get temps in the 70-80C range.Thats not really the problem though. Today I started the machine (from a complete shutdown) and held option to bring up the bootcamp chooser. Meanwhile I was distracted with something at work so the computer sat like this for 15 minutes. No OS had booted, just the gray chooser screen. When I came back the fans were running full blast! The overheat protection had come on. I quickly booted into snowleopard and the temps were in the high 80-low 90's. After a minute it was back to normal 50's but I'm puzzled. All software is up to date.Nothing was even running?!? How is this possible? Nothing should have been straining the system.

Jan 5, 2008I have a 2.0 macbook with 2g ram 80gb harddrive with 29gb free. My problem is that my macbook runs idle at around 130-140 degrees fahrenheit. When I go to Youtube it goes up to around 160 degrees and when I go to Google Books and open up a page my macbook reaches around 180 degrees I also do a lot of audio production and temperatures reach a steady 165-180 if I have a fair bit of processing going on.
What the hell is going on? I need to use google books for school and don't think it is safe to use my MB at such high temps. Also with all of the audio work I do I imagine that the lifespan of this computer will not last very long.

Aug 17, 2010My MacBook Pro gets hot. Right now I have Safari, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and text edit open but I'm not doing anything strenuous on any of them. My CPU temperature is 124 F. My fans are running at 4000rpm, but only because I'm using smcFanControl. When I use firefox it gets even hotter.
I bought my laptop in 2008. It's 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz SDRAM.My question is: this isn't normal, right? Is there anything I can do (other than getting it professionally looked at) to fix it?Also, on a probably unrelated note, the DVD player no longer burns or plays DVDs. Aside from buying a new one, is there anything I can do to fix it?

MacBook Pro :: Overheating For No Reason?
Dec 6, 2014Since i've installed Yosemite, I noticed that my fans are always running on high level (6000rpm) for no reason. As soon as I open it the cpu starts overheating (between 195 and 205 degrees) even if there's no apps using significant energy. I already tried to reset the SMC or the PRAM with no results.

I love it so much. I'm really into video editing and HD video, but the problem is that my MBP is running out of harddrive space, and I'm longing for a bigger display and a better processor. (I have the 13" C2D). I'm going to pick up an iMac this Spring. But I wanted to know if I should stick to the Core i3 21.5, or spend more and go for the 27 inch.

Sep 7, 2010over the past few weeks my blackbook has been shutting down more and more frequently from what I can only believe is overheating. I just checked my computer upon startup with SMC fan control - it starts up at about 70 C and at about 3500 RPM. Yet, after a few minutes, the fan immediately drops down to 1100 RPM or and fluctuates between 800-1400. I try to force the fans to spin with SMC Fan control, but nothing happens. I've looked all over the web and I can't find anything definitive. I know that macbooks tend to overheat. What can I do?

MacBook Air :: Overheating - One Core Shutting Down?
Jul 28, 2008I'v just noticed, after installing iStat menus, two different CPU usage measurement graphs. Core 2 duo, so apparently one for each core or chipset, whatever . But the weird thing is, that sometimes, while watching movies, burning dvd etc. (sample "high usage" situation), when the CPU temp. goes around 60 celc. and fan spins at 6200 rpm, one of the "core graphs" shows nothing, like the core is shutting down (screen attached). It's annoying, because the whole system slows down, I can't do anything, and after like 5 mins it gets back to normal (after closing for example the movie). Any solution for this or should I just get used to it?

Dec 22, 2008this rev B i got is much better than the rev A i used to owned. the youtube and movie lagging is gone. but it's still not powerful enough for a game. i played eschalon book:1 which is not quite heavy and demanding like the new games out there. let alone playing half life 2. it's overheating and locking down the cpu to 800mhz just like my old air. see the screenshot. after playing for 20 minutes, it's becoming very laggy and unplayable. i guess this thin mba is not ok unless playing simple games like gamehouse's card and board games.

I have matched my 13" macbook pro to a 23 inch widescreen monitor and wanted to inquire as the best way to keep the macbook pro ON, but also save on space. I have heard of 'Insomnia' which disables the sleep function on the mac and wanted to check if, by dimming my screen down to off (the minimum brightness the screen will go) and turning on 'insomnia' will that be enough to prevent the screen/unit from overheating?
