MacBook :: Early 2011 13 Inch I5 Fan Running Constantly

Apr 8, 2012

I currently have a 13 inch MBP early 2011 notebook that has a fan running constantly. The fans are not making horrendous noises indicating that the fan is broken or that a foreign object is bouncing around in my computer, but more so you can just hear the fans operating especially in a quiet room. The sound is very soft but in a dead silent room you can hear it working, you can even make out the sound even while typing. I am pretty sure my computer isn't broken, nor have I downloaded anything I am not supposed to that would allow my fans to make the noise. I bought this computer on the 26th of December and all I am using it for is simply MS word and logic pro 9. I uninstalled logic pro 9 a month ago due to my family buying an iMac and even then I can still hear the fan moving. I am curious as to what you all think, I may just bring it into the Apple store because it's quite frustrating having to write a paper and all you can hear is the sound of the fan working. My fans are running at 2000rpm and my research tells me that that number is normal.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody 2.53 Constantly Freezes

Nov 15, 2009

I intended to bring my computer in for service, but since the issues weren't a big deal, I postponed it as long as possible (I'm a professional DJ preforming with Traktor Scratch Pro and Ableton) I also own a previous generation Macbook Pro used for school stuff. This one is in the shop because a friend of mine sat on it and broke the keyboard. Now, whilst preforming last week, my Unibody froze during playing (never happend before). Had to push the power button for 5 sec., you know the drill. I thought this happened because I used my computer for school stuff the other week (installed adobe creative suite, iwork and stuff like that).

Software :: Macbook Pro Freezes Constantly

Jan 22, 2009

I have had my Macbook Pro for about a year and a half, and up until now I haven't had much trouble. Starting yesterday, my mac has been freezing constantly, anywhere between every 2-40 minutes. When it freezes, blue vertical lines will appear on the screen and the whole screen will freeze. Restarting it turns it back on, but sometimes that doesn't even work until after a few tries. This happens in multiple applications, but I notice it happens the most in Safari. I tried using AppleJack, Virus Scan, and deleting things off my hard-drive to solve the problem, but none of it has worked. I'm not sure what to do at this point, it's a major inconvenience having to spend 20 minutes turning the computer on and off to be able to use it for a short while. If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

MacBook Pro :: 13 Freezing Constantly - Freezes On Reboot?

Jul 24, 2009

Recently my 13 inch MBP has been freezing a lot. It seems similar to the 1.7 firmware problem many are reporting, but from what I can tell from their posts the freezing only lasts 15-30 seconds then they can work again. On my computer the freezing does not stop and I am forced to hold the power button to shutdown every time. When I attempt to reboot the computer after that I have to reset the PRAM every time.

I am using a 3rd party hard drive that worked fine up until a little less than a week ago, and also worked fine in my old plastic white macbook. When I put the stock hard drive back in it seems to work fine, but I admittedly haven't used it as extensively and not all of my apps are installed, but most of my freezing occurs in safari as well sometimes itunes. If anyone knows how to downgrade firmware back to 1.6 I would try that as well, but I am not sure if that is possible.

OS X :: MacBook Make Run Fast / Opening Apps And Freezes Constantly?

Feb 22, 2009

I have been having a very odd problem with my MacBook lately. It takes a while for it to turn on, and when it turns on, it is for the most part frozen for a few minutes. I can move the mouse around and such, but no applications will open. My only application that opens on startup automatically is iChat, but now when it tries to open it has a pop up that says "Lost Connection with (my username)" Now, after a few minutes, I am able to open up certain applications like iChat, Yahoo Messenger, Microsoft Word, Safari, and several others, but they freeze up a whole lot with the colorful wheel. I quit the application after it thinks for a few minutes and once I quit it a pop up says "(application I was using) Quit While Being Irresponsive" with links to send the problem to Mac. Now there are several other applications that will not open altogether. I have Final Cut Express, and when I try to open it, it has the arrow under the icon on the dock as if it were opening, but it never does, and quits automatically after a few minutes. Then after my computer is on for a while or if I let an application run long enough being frozen, my screen goes grey and has a box with a message saying I need to restart my computer. I have no idea what the problem with my computer is

IMac :: Intel Freezes Up Constantly

Feb 6, 2009

Having some trouble with my iMac5,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.16 GHz. It's about 2yrs old. Symptoms include: 1 - freezing when I open, close or move windows too quickly, open too many windows and/or when I multi-task in general. Anything processor intensive is unreliable. 2 - apple mouse cursor shoots off to the side of the screen for no apparent reason and scroll button is unreliable. 3 - lines across the screen that resemble pixel drop-outs - they come and go. I'm still running 10.4. I've wiped out my hard drive twice in the last 2 months and started over from scratch. When I re-install 10.4.0, it seems to run fine. until I run the system updates. That's when my trouble begins again. I've also cleared out my caches and histories repeatedly. I've run the Disk Utility repeatedly. This is getting serious. My PC at work is WAY more reliable than my Mac. I'm considering switching back! I owned a G4 for 7 years and was very happy with it. Was the switch to Intel a bad idea?

Intel Mac :: It Freezes/crashes Constantly?

Jun 13, 2012

I have a 2006 imac (1GB memory) with tiger that had been having some issues last year with crashing so I ended up and installing snow leopard and it worked great for about a year and now its acting up again. It freezes at least 2 times a day and I can't open the force quit window so I shut it off manually, but when I turn it back on it has these weird lines on it like a line of pixels got corrupted or something, but sometimes they go away. I save everything to an external drive so I don't think it has to do with it being overloaded. I did notice it mostly happens when I'm multitasking (more than one tab open, or word and firefox open at the same time) or watching a movie. Occasionally it will crash and the screen goes a peach color with white lines and I have to manually restart.

Software :: IPhoto Freezes On Import Constantly?

Jun 4, 2009

I'm running iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2 <402>). I'm running it on a MBP, OS X 10.5.7, 2.4 Ghz with about 35Gb of free space.Every time I launch, it either a) tells me it found photos in an unfinished import and do I want to finish importing them or b) runs normally until I try to import any photos. Both instances lead to the same result: it hangs and I have to force quit. Sometimes it gets all the way through the import and hangs when it appears to be finalizing the import, or other times it hangs during or just before the start of the import. So utterly annoying. iPhoto 08 never gave me this problem, and after I upgraded to 09, it worked fine for about the first month or two.

MacBook Air :: Battery And Noise Comparison Between 11 Inch And 13 Inch?

Nov 16, 2010

Battery

I had a 11 inch air 1.4GHz/4GB/128GB for two weeks. I usually set the brightness to 75% and for consistent web browsing (no heavy flash) I can get about 5h15min battery life. I noticed someone here claiming 8+ hours battery on 13 inch so I decided to give it a shot.

I got a new 13 air with 1.86GHz/4GB/128GB yesterday and start to run on battery immediately. I was disappointed. The brightness was also set to 75% and I start to count the time from 25% while browsing MacRumors.com. And it only took 1h38m for battery descending from 25% to 0%. Again, pure web browsing and no heavy flash.

So here is my conclusion: On 75% brightness, 11 inch air's battery performs beyond advertised 5 hours and 13 inch's battery performs fair and normally should give you around 6h30m~7h.

Noise

I don't have equipments for measuring the noise, but while copying the same 10GB files from external drive to the machine, the fan noise from 13 inch is much louder than 11 inch.

Now I like my 11 inch more in general, although I really hate the 1366 x 768 screen. I don't know if I should sell the 13 inch or 11inch...

[edit]:

On my 11 inch air: battery capacity 4664

On my 13 inch air: battery capacity 6634

[edit2]:

I will do another test to see how long exactly my 13 inch can last after a full charge

MacBook Air :: Analyzing The Differences Between The 11-inch And 13-inch?

Oct 21, 2010

To those contemplating on picking up the 11-inch MacBook Air or the 13-inch MacBook Air, I thought it would be helpful to list the differences between the two.

Below is what I've compiled so far (in no particular order):

1) SD Card Slot is on the 13" MacBook Air, not present on the 11"

2) Higher clock speed configurations on the 13" (1.4 GHz/1.6 GHz vs. 1.86 GHz/2.13 GHz)

3) 6MB of shared L2 Cache on the 13" vs. the 3MB on the 11"

4) 1066 MHz frontside bus on the 13" vs. the 800 MHz on the 11"

5) Larger capacity battery and an extra 2 hours of battery life on the 13" (7 hour 50-watt-hour battery on the 13" vs. 5 hour 35-watt-hour battery on the 11")

6) Slightly larger trackpad and more room for your palms while typing (hey, it's true!)

7) 16:10 1440 x 900 13.3" Display vs. 16:9 1366 x 768 11.6" Display

8) The 13" model weighs in at 2.9 pounds while the 11" weighs in at 2.3 pounds. .5 pound weight difference

If you have anymore differences between the two models, post below and I will add them to the list!

OS X :: 32 Inch LCD TV HDMI Setup With 13 Inch Macbook

Oct 7, 2009

I am trying to use my HD Sansui 32 inch LCD TV as a monitor for my Macbook. I can't work out how to set it up properly. My macbook is running OS X 10.5.8. My TV supports 1920 * 1080 HDMI 60Htz NTSC and various other resolutions. I am using a mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a HDMI lead to the tv. Problem one is that when I switch the Macbook on and close the lid nothing comes up on the TV screen (meaning it is supposed to only driving one screen, the TV). If I do this with the VGA connection it will. Momentarily the apple symbol will come up and the little circle below it but then my TV says signal not supported.

If I have the Macbook lid open when I switch the computer on both screens will work and I can select 1080P, however it is very grainy and not pleasant to read text. I think it looks better using the VGA. I have heard of people getting nice crisp display with HDMI so I am wondering if I am missing something? Is there any other software that can be used to get better results? Which text smoothing settings should I use? Are there other settings? I am using it on my desk so I guess it is about 2 foot from me. I will post my display details in a minute but my computer details are the following:

2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SdRam

MacBook Air :: Difference Between 11-inch And 13-inch?

May 9, 2012

I'm getting one for school and i'm going to have to carrying it aroound quite a bit, so the 11-inch seemed appeling at first, but then i noticed that there is a few pros to the 13-inch than the 11 inch: There's an SD card slot on the 13 inch, which i could care less about, the screen has higher resoulotion, which i don't really care about eiether, but the one difference was that the 13 inch has two hours more battery life, which kinda got me thinking towards the 13-inch. So what do you guys think, is it impossible to work on the 11.6 inch and should i go for the 13 inch, or should i go with the ultra-portability of the 11-inch?

IMac :: The New 27-inch IMac Uses Up To 365W Versus 280W For The Old 24-inch!

Oct 20, 2009

The new 27-inch iMac uses up to 365W vs 280W for the old 24-inch! (going by Apple's published max. power consumption numbers. I doubt they would lie because it isn't exactly favourable for them to put in falsely high numbers in an environmental report).

That means there's some extra beef behind the extra components. Perhaps the ATI 4670 is a bit overclocked and the 4850 runs a bit faster than the old iMacs? Admittedly that 2.8 GHz i7 is going to suck a fair bit of power - the recent 2.8 GHz i7 860 model runs at a 95W TDP, however, the quad core iMac isn't available until November. So it won't be using the i7 860, and my guess it is using another custom processor, something a bit more power efficient, somewhere in between the 55W TDP of the old iMacs and the 95W TDP of the i7 860.

The difference between the power consumption of the two computers is 85W. The old iMac had a 24-watt digital amplifier, this new one has two 17-watt amplifiers. That brings the delta down to 75W. Say the iMac's i7 processor has an 80W TDP. That now brings the delta down to 50W. The new display likely wouldn't increase power consumption because of the LED backlight.

I'm not sure if I'm missing much (OK, two extra RAM chips may use another few watts), but there is still a fairly massive 50W unaccounted for.

Just a bit of fat to chew on

MacBook Air :: It Constantly Freezing Up

Apr 8, 2012

The MacBook Air that I purchased a month ago, freezes up on me constantly. I've researched various forums, and some are stating that this could be due to the system overheating. I really do not believe this is the case with my MacBook Air, as I rarely use it. I only use it for traveling (I write for a living) and every time I use it, it freezes. It is not hot when it freezes.

I could be working on a document or just browsing the Internet and all of a sudden, the cursor and track pad stop working. Sometimes it's ok and when done, I close the lid, or put it in sleep mode. However, when I return to open the system, my track pad, cursor, everything freezes again! I literally have to shut it down with the power key (not even the apple/quit keys work) and reboot the system. Another flaw is that the darn thing will reboot, but I cannot log it (mouse / cursor still don't work). Therefore, it takes bout 4 reboots to engage it again.

I'm at my wits end. I've had this thing to the Apple Store twice and they always say "I've never heard of this happening" and after extensive troubleshooting, I walk away without any resolution. To say that they have never heard of this issue is astounding to me, because the more I research this issue on the Internet, I'm finding more and more complaints. I will also say that this is my SECOND MacAir in one month. I had the same issue with the first one I purchased (after only one week), and returned it to BestBuy for a brand new replacement. I thought it was a fluke. Guess again ... same issue with this one. After all these years, I decided to take the plunge and get an Apple, but I must admit, I feel completely burned. $1200.00 for a laptop and I can barely use it. I'm sick over the entire thing. I will never buy another Apple again.
