I´m trying to discover (with AppleCare support) why my new Air has virtually NO space left on the Start Up Disc...EVER. The OTHER files have always been huge and we´ve trashed everything imaginable. The AppleCare rep suggests that I consider wiping my hard drive clean and starting over. I've done that with my Pro and other computers and will not go there unless absolutely necessary. Today my OTHER appeared for a few hours to be the ONLY kind of files on my SU Disk and indicated I had only 4 MB of space left! Right now, it´s reading that I have all categories of files represented again, but OTHER is still over 41 GB big. Days ago, I took off ALL my docs, movies, photos and am still in constant red alert. That´s why I wonder about DropBox. Some out there on the net say it DOES take up space and others say NO.

Today, I thought I would clear out some memory on my Mac Book Air. I had items in folders and dragged a number of items to Drop Box thinking this would free up space. I must have done something wrong as they items were not in the folders on Drop Box. When I returned to the documents left on my internal hard drive, the folders were intact but the documents in the folders were gone. The documents included keynote presentations, pages docs, numbers docs, and pdf docs.

Is there anything better than dropbox for file syncing that i am not aware of?
it would be very nice if someone would help me bump up my storage space by signing up and install dropbox at this link [removed].
I installed SL 10a432. Transferred a lot of files to the share/dropbox. In swedish this is called:
~/Delad/Brevldemapp/ which in English would translate to "~/Shared/Mailbox folder/" or something similar, it not related to emails, just the literal translation....
what should I write in spotlight to reach this folder? i have tried loads of combination but I cannot find this folder in spotlight but I can find the items in it...
if I write "dela" as in "Delad" it suggest "delat" like it would suggest share insted of shared when it in fact was called shared....
The 1password keychain is encrypted, but if I open the keychain file so I can use 1password or to look up info on my keychain on an open unsecure WiFi, could other people see my passwords and secure notes?
I believe read Dropbox stores all files encrypted, but that MobileMe does not encrypt them. Is that correct? But since the 1password keychain is already encrypted it's not necessary to have it stored encrypted like on Dropbox??
So this Gruber comment on a Shawn Blanc posting got me thinking about how Apple would create a Dropbox competitor.

Ive heard rumors of a Dropbox-killer service from Apple, possibly a part of Mac OS X 10.7. I dont know if it made the cut, but well find out in a few hours.
The problem, of course, is what about Windows? Im not sure how an Apple cloud syncing solution could be tied to a new version of Mac OS X.
Interesting. But knowing Apple they wouldn't just copy Dropbox they'd add a bit of flair to their version. I'm just speculating here about some of the features that I'd love to see.
Rather than one root folder I'd love to be able to set up multiple "Cloud Folders" that could be on the Desktop or Sidebar in the Finder. That way I could have a folder for shared items or have secure folders that are password protect. Sky's the limit.
There would be an option to save a document to a sub-folder that would then publish directly to iWork.com
You would have the option to sync or ignore on a folder basis. There would be Windows access as well to the Cloud Folders through an app and http access as well.
There would be Mac & iOS API access that links in with 3rd party vendors (and their API).
Apple clearly has to wrestle back control of the Cloud infrastructure that iPhone/iPad users rely on. They don't have to kill iDisk but rather they need to augment EVERY Mac and iOS iDevice with the ability to access content through the Cloud.
I like to backup the "Documents" folder as I have a lot of crucial information in there. Dropbox is perfect if I'm using my Mac, as I just throw a Document folder alias in there. Perfect!
But on my iPhone, on the Dropbox website, or on a PC, it simply doesn't work. It thinks the alias folder is an unopenable file!
How do I get it to open on other systems? I know I could just copy it to there and update it once in awhile, but the automatic updating with aliases is perfect.
I want to abandone iDisk, for its poor capabilities and features.
I'm looking for the best alternative ...
I'm testing Dropbox and looking at sugarsync.
Dropbox seems more robust on Mac system, while sugarsync is actually in beta testing on this side, but sugarsync has more attractive price options ...
Anyone has for example tried to syncronize a large virtual disk (VMware for example) or large Aperture library ?
Does anyone have any thoughts on Dropbox vs iDisk? Pros and cons of each?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm at the airport where they have free public wifi. There are about 40 people's macbook hard drives online with their drop box.
How do I disable my drop box on public wifi connections? How do I make a drop box alias that doesn't have my last name on it? This seems very insecure and an invasion of privacy to me.
I have a problem with my Dropbox in Snow Leopard because it is all the time being started when I login and I'd like to disable that. I tried unchecking the option in the Dropbox preferences and deleting Dropbox from the "login items" of my account. But when I restart the computer it's there again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently found an article on how to sync safari bookmarks using Dropbox. Article can be found here: [url]I'm using a latest 27" iMac, running Lion as my main work machine, along with a MacBook Pro 15" running Leopard.I've followed instructions in the article and got my MBP to sync with my iMac.The problem occurs when I add a new bookmark on my iMac, it seems to create a new .plist in the safari library folder as opposed to updating the one in my Dropbox. Thus not syncing. I haven't tried the other way i.e adding a new bookmark on my MBP.

I have Dropbox installed and an update became available. I click on "Update all Apps" and a recurring alert box comes up asking if I want to "Download for free? with text, "This item will be added to your Purchases, and will be available even if your Family Sharing status changes.'" 'When I click "Download" the same alert box keeps reappearing and the file is never downloadedl.

Can I create a shortcut in Dropbox or Google Drive to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my computer at home and have it show up as a folder in the web app or remote folder on my computer here? View 6 Replies View Related I downloaded Dropbox and the Finder has crashed by blinking with the "restore windows"-window. Then I created another administrator account and from here deleted Dropbox. Then restarted and logged in to my normal account. Now Finder wasn't blinking like before but there is nothing viewable on the Desktop and when I click on Finder in the Dock several times it comes up with a window for a splitsecond then closes the window again. Then I can press it several times again and it comes up for a splitsecond and then closes again. When hitting the command-option-esc, the icon blinks here. I've actually also tried the killall Finder in terminal, but even this doesn't work.

I think I must be missing a trick here, but how can I update my files to icloud without having to manually find the file and upload after any changes I have made on my Mac.I see drop box does this and indeed will allow many more file formats to be used, one of which is the universally useful .pdf format. My Iphone will update the changes automatically, I can't believe that the iCloud system won't let my Mac do the same.

OSX 10.7.4 with Excel 14.2.2.(for Mac 2011) and Dropbox: Original files are saved in Dropbox folder on Mac; Aliases are created there and stored local on Mac HD. Using Finder and navigating to Alias works fine; files open, can be modified and resaved. However, using Excel File Open command and navigating to the same Alias results in "File Not Found or Could Not Be Opened" error message.

I received an e-mail with an audio recording from my yoga teacher. On my PC I was able to click on the "address" and download it directly to my docs.
But I'd like to have it on my Mac Air notebook so I can have it with me when I travel.
However, when I click on the "address" to download it takes me to a dropbox sign-up page. I'd rather not sign up with dropbox.
I have a mid 2011 iMac running latest version of Mavericks. I recently purchased an external thunderbolt SSD and cloned my boot HD to it, excluding the user folders as these are too big for the SSD and will remain on the internal HDD, and made it the start disk. Then, once booted with the SSD, I went into users settings and mapped my user to the user folder location on the internal HDD. I then rebooted.
After the reboot everything is working just fine with the exception of Dropbox which first asks for my Mac user account password and then returns the following error and closes the app: Couldn't start DropboxThis is usually because of permissions error. Errors can also be caused by your home folder being stored on a network share.
I see involve going into the preferences in the Dropbox application and clicking the button to repair permissions, but I can't get to that because the application just quits. If I reboot using the internal HDD again I can get the application to load just fine.

I have been using Mac for quite a while and I've always deleted apps just one way. But I never knew it was officially the 'right' way to uninstall things...
This is what I do:
I go to the app that I want to delete, right click on it and click on 'show package contents', then i just delete the whole "contents" folder. The desktop icon goes white so I just drag it to the trash and that's it!
Is this the right way to uninstall? Or does this cause small files to still linger somewhere on my computer?
