Mac Pro :: Using Time Machine Backup - Transferring Files

Aug 6, 2009

So my Mac Pro just had a bunch of hardware replaced by Apple geniuses. But all my preferences are all screwy, so I made a new admin account, but that just made even more preference issues when I transferred files from my old admin account. However, while my Mac Pro was being fixed, I bought a new MacBook Pro and got it all up and running with all my software and files. It would take me a whole day to reinstall OSX and each program individually all over again on my Mac Pro, but I have a Time Machine back up from my MacBook Pro which I could install right off the bat on my Mac Pro. Is that possible? What issues would there be? Anyone else done it?

MacBook Pro :: Transferring Files Over WiFi - Fails To Transfer All Files?

Feb 16, 2010

I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?

MacBook :: Transferring Files From PC To Mac?

Jan 29, 2009

Hiya everyone. You may remember my older post about picking a computer for my girlfriend. Anyways, we ended up going with the Whitebook, 2.4 ghz, 160 hd, 2gb ram refurbed. Tomorrow night I'm going to help her get acquainted with the OsX and such.

Anyways, nothing like a night of intimate file transferring. Can anybody tell me how to transfer huge amounts of data between computers easily? I know this is an incredibly newbish question, but i've only ever added stuff to my Macbook, and sent files to friends, nothing more. How can I mass transfer about 80 gb from a pc to a mac?

MacBook :: Transferring Files From Mac To Mac?

Jun 10, 2009

I bought a UMB this past November and love it except I fell victim to the poor screen quality. I am very impressed with the new notebook lineup. It seems like they are now what they should have been in the first place. I am attempting to sell it and purchase a new MBP. I think I will go with the 15" since the larger screen is more affordable and would be worth it to me.

Now, if I get the new machine, what is the best way to transfer my files such as iTunes and iPhoto libraries, etc? I use Time Machine. I don't want to simply transfer all of my files and settings... I want to be somewhat selective as in I don't want older clutter on my new machine. So do I just plug my external hard drive with my time machine backup and I can pick what I want or do I just drag what I want saved to my external HD and drag them onto the new machine.

MacBook Pro :: Transferring Data From Old Computer / Time Machine Backups Got Destroyed

Feb 11, 2010

both my MacBook and my time machine backups just got destroyed by the water sprinkers coming on. All I have left is the data on my iPhone. I keep all my iPhoto, music, contacts, calandar, and bookmarks on my phone. How will I transfer them to my new computer (even if it is a paid program, I REALLY need to keep this data. Also, how will I keep my new computer from deleting everything on my phone, ESPECIALLY my text messages, when I sync it for the first time? Again, a paid program would be fine because I REALLY need to keep this data

Software :: Transferring Files From Lacie To Pc / Itunes Unable To Find Music Files?

Aug 15, 2009

I have a Lacie external hard disk that was originally formatted for PCs. I have some files there, but more importantly, my iTunes library is saved directly on the Lacie (I have everything on apple lossless, so they are some big files). I will keep using this PC while connected to the Lacie hard disk to syncro my iPod.

The problem is that I bought a mac now and I wanted the Lacie hard disk to be able to transfer files from mac to pc and vice versa. I have already read that I would have to copy the files that are on the Lacie, reformat the Lacie and then paste the files back. My only doubt is that if I do this reformatting, will I have any problems using the iTunes library while connected to my pc and iPod?

I just ask that because every time I changed any iTunes library folder on the computer, the iTunes would say that the music file couldnt be found and ask me if I wanted to look for the file. I didnt want to reformat the Lacie to later find out that I would have to look for every single music file, because that would be nearly impossible. I dont know if I was able to make my question really clear

MacBook Pro :: Error Code -36 While Transferring Files

Nov 30, 2014

I'm transferring my files from a slowly failing mid-2010 MBP to my new retina MBP and have encountered an issue with one of my files. I have two concert recordings (2gb each) that will not transfer onto my hard drive and keep giving me the "Error -36 some data cannot be read or written".i am able to preview the sound files and can listen to them all the way through with no problem, but when i open them in ableton the computer locks up (which is common and cannot necessarily be blamed on the file). I have tried to convert them to a different format using MAX but i get the same error message. I've tried renaming and changing permissions as well as airdrop but it all has the same result of getting this error message. i was able to drag the file into my dropbox folder but (to no sucessful upload) and drag it out, but im not able to copy ans paste it.

I've had no other issues transferring the recordings of the same nature (transferred to my computer just like these two during the same tour).

OS X :: Transferring Large Files From Macbook Pro To External Hard Drive

Nov 8, 2009

I am trying to transfer a large file (~7GB) from my macbook pro to my external drive... but seems that I keep getting an error. If I try to drag and drop from my Mac drive to the folder of my external hard drive I keep getting this message: 'The operation can?t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0).' I tried to use a UNIX command with the Terminal $mv file.xxx /Volumes/HardDrive/ at first it seemed to work, but after a while I receive this message from the Terminal: 'File too large' I am now frustrated... I need to save this large file for backup purposes and my external hard drive is not big enough to be used for Time Machine (it has 80GB out of 160 of space left)

MacBook :: Transferring Files From Hard Drive Formatted For Windows To Mac

I figured it was the motherboard and that is way too costly to replace. So I just bought a Macbook and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'm pretty sure that the hard drive on my pavillion is still ok, so what I've purchased a hard drive enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive as well as transfer my files to my new macbook. My question is whether I would be able to transfer my files from my PC hard drive to the macbook directly without formatting the hard drive because that will erase all my files.

OS X :: Transferring Time Machine Data To New MBP

Sep 9, 2009

I've just got a new MBP. I'm in the process of backing up my old laptop with time machine, so that I can transfer everything to the new computer with the migration assistant. I will have just enough space on my hard drive to do this. However the external HD is only 160 Gb and I would rather have a much bigger drive to use with time machine, and use this device to carry other files around. I don't want to lose the old backup data though. Is there any way to copy back up data onto a new time machine HD?

OS X :: Transferring Data And Applications From Old To New Machine

Jan 4, 2010

I've been using an old G4 iLamp model for years, and it's been wonderful. Today it wouldn't start up, and the repair guys told me that the power supply and logic board were shot. Doing the quick math, the cost of repair got me more than halfway to a much better machine, so I'll probably get a new iMac.

When I do, how do I get my information from the backup drive (LaCie using Quicksilver that backs up everything every night) onto the new machine? What about all of the software that is registered to the old machine serial #? Do I have to reregister it all? Is it as simple as plugging the backup drive up to the new machine and dragging and dropping literally everything on it onto the new hard drive?

OS X :: Transferring Data From Time Machine To Computer?

Jan 4, 2010

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro. My understanding is that you cannot boot from Time Machine. If I were to have a major failure what would be the best way to transfer all my data on Time Machine to the computer? I have a bootable backup on an external HD which presents me with a way to boot up and to actually transfer everything since I last updated. This seems to defeat what Time Machine is for I would think. I know I can drag and drop all the data. What if I did not have a bootable backup what would I do?
