Mac Pro :: How To Know About 09 Octad Performance For Multitasking

Mar 18, 2009

I have been following the discussion of performance for the new Mac Pros. Most of the comments and tests have been related to single applications, such as photoshop performance or video rendering.

I am wondering if anyone can comment on the relative multitasking performance of Octad vs Quad. For example, will the Octad machine be faster than a quad when I have handbrake rendering in the background, while running either photoshop or final cut in the foreground.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: It Keeps Switching Between Multitasking Apps Automatically?

Apr 28, 2012

Sometimes, I'm browsing the web, and Lion will slide back to my desktop, with the menu bar at the top of the screen (the white one) still showing Opera as the active application. Then, after a few seconds, it'll switch back. Then back again. It happens during casual browsing, when I'm filling out an HTML form (like this one), and in applications besides Opera, like iTunes, Mail and Final Cut.I've tried  kill-all Dock and restarting the Finder through the force quit menu, to no avail.

Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Mac Pro :: 2.93 Quad Versus 2.26 Octad

Mar 15, 2009

i want the fastest MAC for processing and editing photos for my PHotography business. I use PS and Lightroom at the same time and i need to be able to switch between them quickly and of course go through my photos quickly. So what i think i need is lots of ram and processing power. But my question is do i need extra processors and cores?

according to [URL] it looks like the 2.93 quad has a better overall performance rating but the 2.26 has a better multicore speedup (whatever that is).

I know theres about 25% or so theoretical bandwidth loss with just two sticks, but what's the real, noticeable performance hit vs 3...if there is any?

OS X :: SL Video Performance On 2.66

Aug 30, 2009

After some difficulty upgrading my 4HD RAID0 2.66 MP to SL I've discovered my full screen Hulu and WB browser video is choppy if I use a full screen pop out window. If i go full screen it works fine. I've checked my Internet speed and it is as good as ever. I have not changed my config. of three LCD screens or any other hardware. This problem happens in both Safari and Firefox. I did have to reset the PRAM in order for the SL installer to see my RAID0 HD per Applecare. The bottom line is I used to be able to watch Hulu via a pop up expanded to the edges of my 24# LCD, and surf using one of my 22 inch screens. Now I can't unless I want the video and audio dialog to sych. I did confirm the the main Radeon 3870 card is still running at 16X. Could this be driver problems?

Mac Pro :: How To Get Better Performance With OpenGL

So I just installed the Apple ATI Radeon HD 4870 in my 2.66 quad Mac Pro1 1. Everything seems to be great but when I ran Cinebench I noticed that it is running OpenGL Engine, 2.0 ATI-1.5.48. In the results I see another 4870 with higher scores running OpenGL Engine, 2.1 ATI-1.6.6. My question is this. Is there something I should update for better performance? Is this a difference in cards, OS, drivers, firmware?

MacBook Air :: Performance Of 11.6 With Two VM Running?

Has anyone tried running multiple virtual machines on these guys yet? I'm looking to run base installs of different OS's for my InfoSec classes. I'm really just testing different security configurations nothing fancy.

I'm looking at the 11.6/1.4/4gb of ram. Most of the time I'm only running 2 Virtual machines, just want to know if it can handle them.

I've seen some people have got win7 to run which is cool but the second os running is critical in this scenario.

PowerPC :: How To Know About PowerBook H.264 Performance?

Sep 13, 2006

My PowerBook 12" 1.5G has 100% CPU usage when playing back the new TV program from iTunes store. And sometimes it even choke.

While I have no virus scanning software, some programs running such as Opera, iTunes, Entourage and have about 20% CPU usage when idle.

Why is it so slow on a PowerBook while you can actually play that video on an iPod? Is it the iPod too powerful or it is just because apple did not optimize enough for older Macs (pushing people to new hardware)?

I have just ordered a new iMac but I am not happy about my PowerBook which is just one year old.

Mac Pro :: Software Raid 0 Performance?

Jan 28, 2008

I just ordered a new Mac Pro 2.8 with the primary purpose of doing video editing on Final Cut. (5-45 min. videos here and there). Because of my budget, I cannot afford the the $800 price tag on the apple raid card but I would like to optimize my rendering and writing times. A lot of the forums I have read do not distinguish between software raid and hardware raid.

So here's my 2 questions.

1. Will I benefit from using the software raid in Disc Utility or would I be better off just using a separate scratch/write disc?

2. With such a fast processor and 3 gig Sata HDs, will raid 0 improve speed enough to make a significant performance jump anyway?

I would use a separate hd for my programs and regular files.

Mac Pro :: Improving -multi- I/O Performance In Mac Pro

Oct 29, 2008

I am sort of shocked how much low I/O performance mars overall responsiveness of my mp. Whenever I have some disk intensive app running the entire system begins to stall awfully up to the point when a simple task such as browsing becomes a painfully slow process. This situation is even aggravated when I concurrently access a flash drive. I have 4 Samsung 1 TB F1s and 8 GB RAM available. Would building a software raid 5 help to improve the situation? I reckon that transfer rates are part of a problem. Intels latest SSD Drives are also much faster than my F1s and also sport much better access times. Has anyone experimented with using such a drive as the system and application drive?

Hardware :: 10.5.6 - Improved Performance Of TC And TM

Dec 15, 2008

One of the stated features of 10.5.6 is improved performance of TC and TM. I've got a TC and have switched off TM b/c it worked so poorly on my Macbook Air. After about a week I would find that my TM would get stuck and corrupted and cause TM to stall on preparing and then fail to load the drive and then proceed to knock down the wireless network. Has anybody who was having problems with TC and TM in the past upgraded to 10.5.6 and seen improvements? I finally got my wireless network working alright and I'm not quite sure how convinced I am that TM will start working now.

Although I just traded in my old white MacBook with a crappy intel graphics card for the new MacBook with a rockin' graphics card, I am curious how much the 10.5.6 update improves performance on the intel graphics cards. Can anybody compare the OpenGL results from 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 to see if I'm the only one who is seeing an improvement. Did Apple update the graphics card drivers or is there some other reason I'm seeing better performance?
