Mac Pro :: JBOD RAID Disks Change

Dec 24, 2010

I have a hex with 4x 2tb istalled on regular Mac bays and one ssd on the optical bay. They(4x 2tb) are configured as a giant 8tb JBOD. Now I purchased 3x 3tb and a sata card for the extra sata ports. Is there a way to create another JBOD with the the new 3tb drives and in the near future get rid of 2tb ones and put the 3x 3tbs on the regular Mac ports without loosing the data. All JBOD will be and was created using Snow Leopard's disk utility.

PowerPC :: Combine Disks With JBOD RAID On G3

Oct 27, 2008

I own a PowerMac G3 with 2 hard drive disks. One is a 20gb and the other is a 40gb. I would like to combine the disks with a pseudoRAID type called JBOD. JBOD stands for 'just a bunch of disks.' It's not really RAID. What I'm after is to see these two drives as one 60gb drive. Is that possible? I'm running Mac OS X Tiger.

Hardware :: Sorting Backups - RAID 1 Vs JBOD?

May 11, 2010

I was reading online that RAID1 is not a very reliable backup method, and is primarily for speedy recovery, over true reliability. I want to buy a dual-bay enclosure; something like the Icy Dock MB662UEAB-2S; [URL] People say they the best thing to do is get 2 separate external drives and backup with one, and use the other to make a copy of the backup drive, so you have 2 separate drives. Would it be fine to just to put 2x1TB drives into the enclosure, setup as JBOD then use Superduper to clone drive A onto drive B. Or is this not a good idea. Also can I stick a single drive into the IcyDock now and buy a second one later, as im a little shot of money at them moment. I got a 500GB old schol hardrive i could use for redundancy for the next 6 months, before i add a second drive into the enclosure.

Mac Pro :: JBOD Or Software Share / RAID Drive

Jul 10, 2010

so here is my question/dilemma. I had a server running in RAID0 that had a drive fail so I lost everything. I will be using a large portion of the storage simply to hold media to stream to my TV, so having one large filesystem doesn't give me any benefits. Should I just set up the mac pro with every drive having its own share or should i RAID0 my drives? Im leaning towards a JBOD solution but someone more experienced may be able to give me a better point of view.

Mac Pro :: Raid 0 And 1 Across 2 Disks / 4 Partitions

Sep 27, 2008

So, please welcome me back. After 15 years (I had Mac Plus, LC and Quadra 650), I am back from the darkside. Bought myself a Mac Pro today. Yeah - I probably should have waited for nehalem, but my PC was getting flaky. Time for the every 9 month wipe/reload and I just didn't want to go through that again, so I jumped. Tomorrow I am moving drives into the MP. My questions is specifically about partitioning and Raid. I typically partition my drives about 1/2 way down the middle and give the 1st partition to high performance needs and leave the second for infrequent use of backups and storage.

Lets assume I have two WD6400AAKS (I have three actually). Ideally, I'd like to partition them like this:
WD1 Partition 1A (200GB) Partition 1B (400GB)
WD2 Partition 2A (200GB) Partition 2B (400GB)

Then (using Soft Raid)
- Config partition 1A and 2A as Raid 0 Striped (giving me 400GB high performance)
- And config partition 1B and 2B as Raid 1 Mirrored (giving me 400GB redundant backup)

(Yes - of course I don't want to access the mirrored drives when expecting high performance from the striped drives). I assume that once the drives are partitioned, the Soft Raid will simply see them as four different drives allowing me to configure them as described. But before dropping a few hours into this, I thought I'd let all you raid/hard drive experts give your opinion.

OS X Mavericks :: Why No RAID Options For New Disks

Nov 30, 2014

"My name is Shaun, and I am a mac-aholic"

I inserted 4 new 3TB disks into the bays of my Mac Pro (2012), and there is no RAID option for them.

How I got here:

Inserted the WD Red drives, and they were not initiated.

I "erased" the drives, gave them names, and they appear in Disk Utility in grey drives.

Went to set up the RAID, and move the drives into the RAID, but got an error that they could not be used.

It appears to me that disk utility is not allowing me to fully use those drives. I Have created RAID drives before with no issue in RAID1 with 3TB drives before on this machine. Am perplexed, I thought this to be the easy and simple part of my upgrade odyssey! Did I screw up the initialization? On all FOUR drives?

Now, if I click on the drives, the RAID option does not present itself.

FWIW, I am using OS X 10.9.5, on Mac Pro 5,1. I boot from PCIe card. My end goal is to create a 4-disk RAID 10 using the four SATA connections on the MP.

Mac Pro :: Making 4 Disks Into Raid 5 Array Setup?

Jan 9, 2011

I have a Early 2008 Mac Pro. I have the Apple Hardware Raid Card Installed. I have 4 2TB disks installed. Currently I've got the system disk setup in Bay 1 as a single disk. Then I have the disks in bays 2 through 4 setup as a raid 5. I've been thinking that I might be better off to make all 4 disks into a raid 5 array and then just make volumes for the system disk and my work disk. My goal is to have a system volume an a scratch/work volume for image and video editing.

Mac Pro :: Changing From Mirror Raid To Two Independent Disks?

Aug 20, 2014

Can I just remove one of the drives and what are the consequences of the removal. I would like to go from a mirrored raid to a carbon copy of the disk which would be updated weekly and use Time Machine in between.

Do I open up a can of worms  - my suspicion is that if I want to do that I'll have to reformat the RAID with the loss of all data.

Any workaround short of making a copy, removing the raid and restoring the data?

Mac Mini :: Server - Raid 0 Vs System + Scratch Disks?

Aug 1, 2010

I'm about to get a Mac Mini Server for audio, video, and graphic production, in addition to everyday productivity use. If in the same situation, which would you prefer?

1) to stripe (Raid 0) the two internal disks, or

2) use one as the install/OS disk and the other as the data/scratch disk?

(...assuming you have a 1TB external backup drive, and find FW800 to be much slower than internal SATA for a data/scratch disk).

Does anyone have an OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro Qx2? If so any idea how to get it into JBOD mode? In the book, it shows to set the selector to 0 if using a software raid, however if I do that the rebuild light just blinks (why when it shouldn't be in a raid?) and does nothing even after 36 hours. All other raid modes that I have tested on this work flawlessly.

Hardware :: Can A RAID 1 Guardian Maximus Rebuild Easily / Have Partitioned The RAID Set

Dec 2, 2009

I just bought a Guardian Maximus RAID1 kit and I have two 1TB drives in it. I'm using it over Airport Extreme as an airdisk (mac osx 10.6.2)

My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?

Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?

Mac Pro :: Raid Speed ... Raid 5 Vs Straight Sata HDs

Jan 28, 2008

ive put 4 of the hitachi 1tbs in my new mac pro.. and i really want to do Raid on them eventually.. and buy the pricey apple raid card.. i'll do it.. but speed wise:

How fast is a Sata connection straight from HD>Motherboard... ~75mb/s?
Is the Raid 5 config with all those drives much faster... around ~110mb/s?

Do you know if there is anyway to get a 5th drive into the raid 5 array? using the ODD space.. or some externals too... i need as much as space as possible...

And boot camp wont work with raid card anymore? I was thinking to have the startup disc be a raptor to increase speed on the apps, how would it integrate with the raid card, etc

Mac Pro :: Software RAID Versus Hardware RAID?

Apr 20, 2010

I am planning on getting a 2010 MP when they come and have a question about it. I am 90% sure that with my budget, I will not be able to after a RAID card. I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. Feel free to list any other pros and cons about either a software RAID or hardware RAID, I wana make sure I have all the details before making a final decision on it.

OS X :: System Re-installation Via Install Disks / Install Disks Not Present?

Nov 27, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (first generation of MacBook Pro released). I run OSX 10.6.5. My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?

**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.

Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.
