Is it true the optical audio out doesn't respond to the keyboard audio controls? I read that the tosslink out volume cannot be adjusted using the keyboard controls. Can anyone confirm?

I'm using my airport express to play my iTunes on some speakers, but the volume shortcuts on the keyboard don't control the volume for some reason. you have to open iTunes and use the slider. are the buttons for the computer speakers only?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI think this is a problem that started with Snow Leopard and I'm wondering if there's a solution to it yet.
Right now I have iTunes open playing music, as well as a paused video in VLC. When I press the play/pause button (F8) on my black late 2008 MacBook, it pauses iTunes but then unpauses the VLC video. This is obviously totally unwanted behavior. How do I fix this so that this button only controls one app at a time?
I have my Mini hooked up through a usb/minidisplayport to HDMI adapter. On my keyboard when I push mute or volume up or down, the computer shows the mute/vol up/vol down icon on the screen when I push it and it makes the volume sound, but it does not actually mute the tv or make the volume go up or down. Only the actual TV controls will make it work.

If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI finally went from Leopard to Snow Leopard (SL) by doing a clean install. But I found I was not able to boot from the install disk by the normal procedure -- restarting and pressing the Option or C keys. Before the SL install, I had a volume structure problem on my HD and tried to use the Leopard install DVD to repair the drive. I was unable to do that by using the normal boot up procedure.why I can't boot from the optiical drive by pressing the designated keyboard key(s)?

Just found this on diglloyd's site: his solution to the SSD slowdown with usage (because of our lack of TRIM support) is to:
1) clone your SSD (back-up)
2) copy a single 100%-size file on it (like copy a 73GB file onto a 80GB SSD)
3) erase that file
4) clone it back in

The only thing holding him back is that he has an analog surround sound system he uses for his speakers. I am having a hard time myself finding a converter that can make his speakers work in the iMac's optical digital output port. Any products out there that will do that?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my daughter's accounts setup with parental controls (she's 9). I use the Parental Controls to limit the apps that she has access to so she does not get into trouble with applications that she should not be using.
I was working in my daughter's accounts the other day and I accessed the "System Preferences" application. Because this was one of the applications that I blocked, I was prompted (something to the effect of): This application is blocked by parental controls do you want to "Always Allow access", "Allow Access One Time", "Cancel"
I selected "Always allow" by accident. Now, when I go into parental controls, the "System Preferences" box is still unchecked, indicating that it should not be accessible by my daughter - but, when I go into my daughter's account, she has free/clear access to system preferences. I've tried checking and unchecking the Systems Preferences in parental controls, but it does not block access.
I noticed that my in-laws 13-year old kid spends all his time glued to their iMac. I know that his user-account has parental controls enabled, and his computer-time is limited. I talked with him about it, and he mentioned that "Those time-limits are useless, since I can easily bypass them". He wouldn't tell me how he does it, though.
So, how could he bypass the controls? I'm asking because I would like to be able to plug that hole (if possible), so he would do something else than sit by the computer all the time.
"Discussing" the matter with a frigging 13-year old who thinks he knows everything is next to useless.
Alternatively: is there a third-party parenting-app that would offer more robust features that the OS X built-in toold do?
I have a 13-year old son on an iBook running 10.4. Due to various internet and chat room issues which I won't go into here, I've had to add myself as an administrator on his computer and activate parental controls on his user account. His new goal in life now is to figure out how to circumvent them.
It seems like it shouldn't be possible . . . but then again, nothing is impossible. How concerned do I need to be?
I can't seem to find the AV controls anywhere in version 10. Someone tell me where they are. In Leopard, it was in the window tab but this isn't the case in SL.

I set up my own account name when first bought the computer. I want to make sure that my computer cannot be used by anyone else. How do I go about doing that? (I made another account name today because my computer said I had to make another account name, that I could not make the administrator name into the account name using parental control. I didn't do anything with the new account name because the instructions on the screen got to confusing.)

I have a G5 Imac and after 3 years, the bluetooth connection to a wireless keyboard and mouse constantly cuts in and out. (works for 3 minutes, then won't, then will, etc.)
I've tried the same mouse and keyboard with my macbook and they both work fine with no dropouts.
I've checked for any updates to airport and there are none.
I've tried searching here and at several other forums...I tried deleting some file people suggested and that didn't work....in short I've tried everything I could and nothing has worked.
The only think I can think of is that the bluetooth "controller" or whatever is the engine for the bluetooth in the Imac is just plain bad. The problem is that I don't know exactly what or where it is, or if it is even replaceable?
I am using Logitech Z-5500s with my MP. Under the sound settings with digital optical selected, it says: "The selected device has no output controls." And at the top of the screen where it shows the volume, it is grayed out. And when I hit the volume up/down/mute button on my keyboard, it has a circle with a line through it. If I play a song on iTunes, sound comes out and I can control the volume through the Logitech controller like normal. But even when something is playing, it still won't let me adjust the volume through the computer.
