Pretty sure my external hard drive has crashed. I have unplugged and reconnected the USB, restarted the mac but it is just gone and the Mac can't find it.
I keep my itunes and iphoto files on this hd. I use Time machine as the back up. My question is if I buy a new external HD, how do I recover everything from the time machine backup?

My external Hard Drive (Western Digital 2TB hard drive in a ICYBOX 2-bay USB 2.0 HD Dock) won't transfer files to the Mac HD. The transfer box comes up but stays at the 'estimating time' stage and remains like that. No matter how big the file/group of files are (biggest I've tried was only 500-odd MB) it won't transfer and stays at the 'estimating time' stage. When I try and stop the transfer, the transfer box remains at the 'stopping' stage until I restart the iMac. I can access other programs during this 'stopping' stage, as long as it doesn't involve the External HD.
When I attempt to open files from the External HD in Photoshop CS4, both Photoshop and Finder stop responding and have I have to 'Force Quit'. However, upon force quitting finder, I loose all icons on the desktop until I restart the Mac via holding down the 'Power' button on the back.
Ive already done a couple things.
- I excluded the Ext HD on the Spotlight>Privacy tab.
- I verified the Ext HD via System Utilities. Some errors came up but the Repair was successful and subsequent Verifications have returned as 'OK'.
- I tried the Mac Diagnostic tool as suggested by Apple, but when I press the 'D' key on start up nothing happens.
The annoying thing is that this problem came out of the blue, the Ext HD was working fine 3 days ago.

My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it?

My external hard drive (Iomega powered 1TB hard drive) that I had as the Time Machine target recently filled up - I have 500GB on 1TB iMac - yet TM showed 999GB. I removed this hard drive and installed a WD USB powered 1TB and this keeps disconnecting - suspect by iMac. TM on System Preferences will not allow me to select the hard drive - I have to remove and reconnect the USB lead to allow the iMac to see it

I recently invested in a refurbished iMac which is running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D2001).
I am trying to access my existing external hard drive through the machine and although this lights up when plugged in, it doesn't appear in the finder. Other Memory sticks work without problem.
It is a Western Digital Elements 160GB Portable Hard Drive that has worked and continues to do so without problem on my ancient iBook G4.

I purchased an external hard drive ( a Seagate 2 TB Expansion Desktop Drive) and was told by the MAC rep in the store to perform the following simple task to reformat the disk so I could drag and drop files from my iMAC and store them on the external hard drive:
1. Go to Disk Utility
2. Choose the External Hard Drive
3. Select Erase
4. Select MAC OS Extended (Journaled)
5. Click on Erase button
Unfortunately when I do this, I get the following error: Disk erase Failed with Error: File system formatter failed? I have Mac OS X (10.5.8)...

My Macbook crashed recently and it just tells me to turn it off when I start it. I've exhausted all the recommended options in the manual (default settings, etc.) and unfortunately, I'm missing the first one of the Tiger installation/restoration discs . Is there any way I can access the files I need to back up using Carbon Copy Cloner on an external hard driver (which in this case would be an ipod)? It seems to think you can, but nothing on their web site seems especially clear in this. Also - I don't have access to a Mac right now, so presumably I won't be able to unpack the files the CCC DMG on Ubuntu or the ipod - not sure whether that matters or not.

Ill try to keep this short. i got Macbook C2D / OSX 10.4 / 80GB HDD What happened: I wanted to free up space on my macbook, so I removed my bootcamp partition buy using the bootcamp installer to merge the osx and winxp partition back together. The installer froze for 30min and i decided to manually restart (holding power button). What a mistake i made, on reboot i only get the folder with the "?" icon. Symptoms: OSX installer does not see a drive. None of the bootable linux recovery disk Ive tried can see the drive. WinXP, Win98 recover disks do not see the drive. Terminal "diskutil list" shows=

When I watch a flash video on my MacBook it causes Firefox (and Safari) to crash probably 70% of the time.
I noticed today that it started right when I upgraded my hard drive to a 320gb Samsung model in January. What made me notice that is because I am taking the MacBook to get its case fixed tomorrow so I put the original hard drive back in. Ever since the original hard drive has been reinserted flash videos have played with no problems.
Can a hard drive cause a problem like this?
btw I have 4gb of memory so I should have plenty of resources.

I have just bought a new desktop iMac to replace my first and original Mac Power PC G4, OS 10.4.11. It has iDVD installed, which no longer comes with the latest iMacs. I have a LaCie external hard drive with just the basic Intego Backup Assistant operating. I'm considering whether to invest in upgrading to Pro, which would allow me to backup the entire hard drive of my old Mac. I am having issues with my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (Random freezing up). I took it to the local Apple Store and an associate suggested I back up my hard drive before bring it in for diagnosis. He suggested a 2 TB external drive but others have told me that is way too large. I have heard everything from nothing larger than a 500 GB drive and even one self proclaimed computer wizzard says I can get by with a 10 GB thumb drive. I have a 2011 iMac which i've loved using. I bought a Seagate goflex external harddrive so I could start using time machine. I've noticed that whenver I power my iMac down it will sit on the grey screen just before shutting off for a long time. In fact, it will not actually shut down until i unplug my external hard drive. As soon as I unplug my harddrive the mac starts thinking again and shuts down within seconds. Why it would do this. I now hard plug my harddrive in because of this, which is kinda of dumb since I bought it to work as a time machine.

I am using IMac late 2011 model core i5 4gb ram. I recently bought seagate freeagent goflex desk 2tb version and I am using it as time machine. but when it is connected system is freezing frequently and some times I am getting kernel panic error but after disconnecting it IMac runs smoothly I used my system with out connecting for few days and there is no problem at all but when i am connecting and using it all this happens again. Another thing i am also using freeagent goflex portable drive for last one year and I did not experienced such problems at all.

I am finding that most new external hard drives have USB 3 connections. Can I use an external hard drive with a USB 3 connection on my older Mac computers?
