Intel Mac :: It Turn Off HDD That Is Constantly Spinning
Mar 12, 2012
I have a 27' iMac with internal SDD and HDD. I really like how it is so quiet. It worked really well out of the box though had a glitch which required a reinstall of Lion. Now the HDD is constantly spinning even if there are no apps open that require r/w access to the HDD. I've used pmset to turn it off after 1 min but I'd rather it didn't come on at all unless i send something to/from the HDD. Any ideas how to configure this correctly?

i recently got a 13" mbp, upgraded to a WD scorpio blue 500gb and 4gb crucial RAM. the annoying thing is that the WD HDD seems to always be spinning (randomly at different rates, never silent).
i feel that this is not only draining the battery, but it is also slightly obnoxious. is there any way to get the thing to stop spinning, or is that just what it does. I feel as though my past macbooks havent had this problem.

On the Mac partition of my hard drive, the hard drive spins every so often. Annoying, but manageable. on my Windows partition, it spins constantly, even when all I am doing is browsing the internet.

I've had my G5 for a couple years. I keep it under my desk, so I don't hear much from it, but I have noticed that the hard drive is constantly spinning. It's been doing it for as long as I can remember. Any ideas why, and whether I should expect a failure because of it?

I'm prepping my Macbook Pro for daily usage now and moving around all my documents, etc.What's the normal fan speed that you guys usually use during your normal daily usages and what temperature do you expect when you are using it everyday?Would the fan wear out if I set it to 3500RPM indefinitely when I use it using SMC Fan Control?

I have a macbook 2.1ghz with OSX 10.5.8 running with 4gb of 667mhz DDR2
Recently I have been getting spinning beach balls of death on a constant biases. They come when I try to open web pages such as [URL]... ANYTHING actually. They come when I try to open applications, they seem to come when I try to do almost anything. I cannot force quit when they come. I have tried waiting for them to go away, sometimes up to an hour and nothing happens. They have come when I try to open utilities to try to figure out what is wrong. They come in safe mode.
I freed up hard disk space, over 60 gigs of the 120 gig hard drive. NOTHING.

Since last night's Mac OS upgrade (I use Lion), the cursor in Safari is a constantly spinning beachball. How can I turn it back into an arrow? Safari is still working, by the way--but the beachball keeps spinning.

My parents have an older 20-inch white Intel iMac that has run great through the years. But about a week ago it just started spinning the CPU fans up to 3500-4000 RPMs and it won't bring them back down. Istat shows that the CPU temp is around 90 degrees and the computer remains cool to the touch.
So it isn't overheating. My parents keep it off most of the time because they don't want to ruin it, but they're planning on using it in their business they're trying to start up. We've done some web searches and nothing seems to fix it.

After having inserted a dvd borrowed from the library which my Imac had a really tough time reading, I turned off my Imac as usual. Since then when I turn my mac on the fan starts roaring and i don't get beyond the first white screen with the sort of clocked wheel just going round and round. I don't have a clue to what to do.

Having some trouble with my iMac5,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.16 GHz. It's about 2yrs old. Symptoms include: 1 - freezing when I open, close or move windows too quickly, open too many windows and/or when I multi-task in general. Anything processor intensive is unreliable. 2 - apple mouse cursor shoots off to the side of the screen for no apparent reason and scroll button is unreliable. 3 - lines across the screen that resemble pixel drop-outs - they come and go. I'm still running 10.4. I've wiped out my hard drive twice in the last 2 months and started over from scratch. When I re-install 10.4.0, it seems to run fine. until I run the system updates. That's when my trouble begins again. I've also cleared out my caches and histories repeatedly. I've run the Disk Utility repeatedly. This is getting serious. My PC at work is WAY more reliable than my Mac. I'm considering switching back! I owned a G4 for 7 years and was very happy with it. Was the switch to Intel a bad idea?

The computer freezes or crashes fairly regularly - sometimes within minutes of being started. I have wiped the hard disk several times and done a clean reinstall of Lion. The computer still crashes - again within minutes of the Finder launching.However, it behaves itself when I boot it into Windows, or if I do a Safe Boot. This is starting to drive me nuts.Here's the latest kernel panic

I've had Mac's since my IIsi in '91 and currently the proud owner of MacBook Pro, iPhone and iMac which is just 18 months old.2 days ago I switched the machine off (iMac) and it hasn't been fully back on since. Each time I start it it automatically goes into soft boot mode. As the small bar moves across the screen it stops after about 1 centimetre (.4 of an inch) and simply whines and shuts down. I've tried the old tricks of holding down 'c' and 'd'. On one of the attempts I did reach the desktop and managed to run disk utility which said there were no problems. However, once I rebooted it simply carried on doing the same. I also managed to run Techtool deluxe which comes with the Apple Extended Warranty. Unfortunately it's not fully compatiable with OSX Lion so didn't run properly.Â
I've not known a Mac to be so knackered before. I have tried the command-R scenario but I don't think reloading Lion OSX is the cure for what appears to be a serious problem. When I shut down the iMac on Thursday I had Acrobat and Photoshop open, also iTunes and Mail. I generally use Facetime these days but on Thursday (I haven't used my Skype account for 18 months) I did install the latest version of Skype as someone required a Skype call with me. The software installed okay and I had the conversation with the person though the camera feature didn't work my end. I do wonder whether installing the Skype software has done something to the iMac. However, I don't see that it would stop it starting up completely!Â

I have a 2006 imac (1GB memory) with tiger that had been having some issues last year with crashing so I ended up and installing snow leopard and it worked great for about a year and now its acting up again. It freezes at least 2 times a day and I can't open the force quit window so I shut it off manually, but when I turn it back on it has these weird lines on it like a line of pixels got corrupted or something, but sometimes they go away. I save everything to an external drive so I don't think it has to do with it being overloaded. I did notice it mostly happens when I'm multitasking (more than one tab open, or word and firefox open at the same time) or watching a movie. Occasionally it will crash and the screen goes a peach color with white lines and I have to manually restart.  Â

I have a 2009 24" iMac with OS X 10.7.4 and 8GB RAM. I have a problem with the system cycling through mute/unmute constantly, i.e. both in the sound functionality going on and off and the mute/unmute symbol appearing on screen. I thought this was just due to me filling the keyboard buffer by leaning on it, but none of the following measures has stopped this:
1. Switch off/on bluetooth keyboard;
2. Disconnect bluetooth keyboard, power off the keyboard and substitute a USB keyboard;
3. Several reboot, both by a restart and a cold reboot
4. Reset the PRAM
The symptom starts as soon at the Mac is running, i.e. at the screen with the user icon/name list, before anyone has logged in. Apart from this, the system seems to be completely usable - no unexplained crashes, slowness etc.

My iMac (purchased Feb 6) is constantly dropping the wifi signal. It seems to happen randomly...sometimes it's there, sometimes not and I must go to Networking icon and all the steps to reconnect!. (My iPad2 and IPhone are not having this problem...or perhaps their 3G has kept me from noticing.)

My imac constantly drops my wifi connection. Sometimes it'll last 5 minutes, other times less than a minute. And, yet other times, it'll go on for 30 minutes. I've tried deleting the network and the adding it again, reset router, changed channels on the router and countless other solutions with no success. Sometimes, it does not even find my wireless network! My ipad, my wife's macbook pro and my mac air all seem fine on the network and do not drop the signal. What is going on? Could it be my wireless card? Is there any easy way to check if I have a faulty wireless card?
