Is the 27 inch 3.2 ghz I3 model a better value in terms of increased computer and graphics performance and is it better to get the 2nd generation model because of prior issues (i.e. yellow tinge)?

Hello everyone, I'm currently looking to buy a 27 inch imac and can't decide whether to get a base i3 27 inch or a refurbished i5 quad core 27 inch. With the i3 I can get the student discount and qualify for the ipod, but the i5 is 23% off right now. Which should I get? Also is there a benefit of getting a 5 series graphics card over a 4 series graphics card?

Intel Mac :: Internet Crashes On 27 Inch 2011 Model While On All 3 Other Devices Still Have Connectivity?

Mar 16, 2012

I have wireless network run via BT hub. However because of ongoing connectivity issues connect the main machine via the ethernet. I no longer use my Airport extreme. Since I first bought this machine I have had connectivity issues. At first thought it was BT & while initially it was I can now isolate the issues to this specific machine. I find that in the morning the connection has gone down & the only way to get it back is to restart everything. I can however get connected through all my other devices.

I am using Lion & safari or chrome or firefox! Have regular clearences of my cache.I have to box up the machine & trundle to my nearest Apple store (my 90 days home support is expired).

IMac :: How Many Memory Slots In The 3.06 27 Incher

Nov 17, 2009

How many memory slots are in the 3.06 27 incher, and how many slots are taking up on the basic setup? If there are four slots, are all four slots filled with 1gb cards? Im curious because I ordered my iMac from my job here, and I also ordered 2gb of memory, thinking I can go from 4gb to 6gb of ram. I was going to order a 4gb card, but it was 200 euros at my job. If anything, I will order a couple of more 2gb cards, but that all depends on the number of slots available/open.

IMac :: Did Install Memory In The Best Slots

Apr 27, 2010

I have a 27" iMac and recently picked up the latest model MacBook. I also picked up a 4Gb (2x2) RAM. I placed the 4Gb in the MacBook and decided to place that 2GB from the MB in my iMac to boost it to 6GB.

Here is my question, did I place the RAM in the best slots, assuming there is such a thing as best slots. I remember from the old day of PC that there was a strict order for placement else I may not get the most out of the additional RAM. It does register as 6GB when I click on 'About This Mac'. Below is a diagram and screen shot to show exactly what I did.

Hardware :: How To Change G5 Bad Memory Slots

May 20, 2009

I have 1 gig sticks in each of the 8 slots. I recently became aware that I am only accessing 6 gig. System profiler tells me all sticks are ok:

however, it is showing 512 sticks in slots J13, J14, J43, J44. (Again, they are in fact 1 gig sticks). Apple Hardware test implicates J14 and J44, with this error message: post/0/2048 DIMM3/J14, DIMM7/J44

By various means I have determined that my memory sticks are fine. I've swapped them out and tried them in various slots. The sticks in the bad slots work fine in other slots, etc etc. So I'm certain it isn't the RAM. Also, they are paired correctly.

PowerPC :: IBook - Available Memory Expansion Slots

Aug 4, 2007

The other day, I put more ram into 2 12-inch ibooks - my own 1.0 ghz, and my wife's 1.33 ghz (Yes, I know she has the faster machine. It means I'm the next to upgrade). Anyway, this is the first time I had opened them up at all and I saw something that confused me: I know that ibooks have only one available expansion slot for ram. That's what I saw on mine. But on my wife's, it looked like there was a second slot lower down, just below where I installed the ram, but missing the clips to hold the ram in place.

Is this in fact a second ram expansion slot, or is it just the shape of it that makes it appear to be one, or is it a second slot that is somehow unsupported or unable to be used? My guess is that it's just the shape of the hardware, and it only appears to be a second ram slot, but isn't really. But wouldn't it be sweet if there was in fact another usable slot in the ibook?

OS X :: Looking For Software For A New Base Model Mac Mini

Nov 23, 2009

I'm going to get a New base model Mac Mini or a refurbished Mac Mini.

Being a broke college student I'm a little confused on what software I should get.

Should I buy MS Office for the Mac or just run it through Window's?
I have a copy of Window's 7 and MS Office small business for pc.

Is that going to be a pain in the butt to do my homework and manage office files on my Mini if I have to run it through Window's on the Mini?I guess I don't understand what to expect. Is it like dual booting a pc, like how I use my pc with Linux and Windows?

Also what do I do with all my documents, pics, mp3's etc.... when I make the switch? Can I put them on a thumb drive and just transfer them over to the Mac or won't that work?I would prefer to keep my music collection in MP3 format, seeing how it's all been painstakingly ripped using" exact audio copy with lame encoding". There's not much but I'm pleased with the results.but my Sansa clip plays "apple" format anyways I think.Or should I "now that I'm switching to a Mac" start changing formats over to itunes default format and encoding techniques. My PC is old and outdated and would like to eventually phase it out completely.

I received my 11.6 base model Air today. So far everything has rocked about it except for one thing: web surfing. When it loads up pages it jitters when I scroll or will lag on my input. I'm thinking this could either be my WiFi connection, which is my parent's and I'm not use to these speeds, or if the Air is just not that good for web work.

Hardware :: Using Airport Extreme Base Station (newest Model)?

Nov 29, 2009

I have an airport base station that was setup and working properly in my home office. I change locations within my home and now it will not work correctly. Literally, all I did was unplug and plug everything back in. The internet connection is working fine. I plugged it directly into the computer and it works.

I got frustrated and reset it back to factory defaults and reinstalled it and now it still doesn't work.

I can get the internet to work through the ethernet port, if I set the ip to 10.0.1.1

However, I cannot get the airport to work at all. I did notice that the ip when it sets it automatically, was a 169 ip.

Will the base model be sufficient for my needs? Mainly going to be web browsing and using it as a media station with iTunes. The only thing I'm not sure of is ripping blu-rays. How long would it take to do a 1080p rip on the base model iMac and would the base model be sufficient enough to play back these rips? I'm currently having issues on my hp laptop even playing back 720p blu-ray rips.

Mac Mini :: Is There Noticeable Difference Between 2 And 4 GB On The Mini Base Model

Mar 10, 2009

I'm sitting here thinking I made a mistake by being cheap and just upgrading the base model to 2 GB when virtually everyone else is going for 4 GB... I do realize that this is mainly because most people choose to upgrade themselves, and then there's no point in not installing 4 GB. The thing is that I don't think I would benefit at all from having 4 instead of 2 GB of memory, since I won't be doing any "heavy" work on it whatsoever.

I might use Photoshop now and then, but that's about it, and that works just fine on my current MacBook with 2 GB ram (white 2006 model). Also, my memory usage most often shows that I have 1,2 GB of free memory, which isn't even close to "maxing" it. I've been looking for benchmarks comparing these two configurations, but I couldn't find any. I know that it's quite easy to upgrade it yourself later, but I'd rather avoid it...

IMac :: Quad Core I5 OR Base Model Core I3?

Jul 28, 2010

I know other threads exist, but they don't have responses specific to me so what's the harm in one more?

So, I am going to be selling my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro this week to get a new 27" iMac and I just need some legitimate advice from those "in the know" on processors.

I plan on having this iMac for about 3 years to do the following tasks:

1.) Record and edit HD cable (1080i) from an Elgato EyeTV HD - will include some encoding of 2+ hour sports game recordings

2.) Some light editing of 720p iPhone 4 clips in iMovie

3.) Surf the web, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, and all the other standard stuff

Assuming budget is an issue, would you recommend me spending the extra money for a Quad Core i5 iMac or would I be ok based on the info above just going with the base Dual Core i3 model?

Like, will there be a considerable difference in the two machines (factoring in processor and graphics card) that will really be worth the extra $300 - $400 for 3 years of use?

MacBook :: Maximum Memory In Late 2006 Model?

Jan 22, 2010

I have one of these Macbooks that I want to pass on to the daughter of a friend for use in college. To try and extend its life and usefulness a little I was wondering if I could add more memory. I'm aware that the Apple tech specs state that 2GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 is the maximum supported, but since I have 2 x 2GB of that memory spare I was wondering if anyone here on the forums know different?
