Intel Mac :: Can't Find User Account When Trying To Delete
May 6, 2012
I'm using an iMac computer.Â
And the problem I'm having is the following:Â
I'm trying to delete an user account from my computer following the steps from apple.Â
[URL]
So at step 3 they say I have to click on the user account I want to delete. But I cannot see the user account in the list. Â
It is the only account with an password, but that person doesn't know the password even with the clues for it. Besides that I currently don't have the option to contact him.Â

It was the first operating user account before I setup my iCloud. Once I migrated my data from the other computer and setup my iCloud, I realized that I am stuck with 2 user accounts. I am only actively using the one that I migrated over and setup the iCloud with, the other account, although the other one was the first operating account, it is absolutely no use to me now. I tried many times to delete it from system pref and it keeps on coming back! I suspect it has something to do multiple mobile devices.

I never use "User Accounts" on my MacBook. So I don't know much about them.
If I delete one User Account, will it delete that user's libraries, such as their music, movies, documents, etc?
Also, will it delete the programs that were installed under that user's account, but are accessible by all users?

I am having trouble deleting a user account from my iMac G5 PowerPC running OS 10.5. I have made a series of mistakes which now prevents me from being able to delete this account.
First, I tried to change the name (full name as well as short name and user folder path). Secondly, I deleted the user folder manually.
So, basically all files and folders associated with this account are gone, but the user name still shows up in the system pref window, but with the "-" button greyed out.
The account I want to delete is the one which was made when I installed the OS in the first place. I have a feeling this might be problematic.

I migrated my old MacBook to my new MacBook Pro without changing the user accounts so now I have a user account on the MBP that I only used for a few days. I'm trying to determine whether or not I need to keep that new user account. I didnt put anything on it of substance (set a few bookmarks in Safari and downloaded a couple of free apps). I've read a few things online about issues people have after trying to delete user accounts.

I've already deleted the user and clicked "Delete Immediately" to remove the user account and all the user's files, but a lot of their files and applications still show up in my Finder (and take up tons of storage space). Is there a way to permanently delete all of the old stuff?

Today when I turned on my iMac, it went to the login screen and then something odd happened. I saw a second account on the login list that i never made. It is called "Other: and has an icon with lines and spheres (like a networking icon). Also when I click on it, it asks for a name and password.I logged into account and went straight to System Preferences ->Accounts and there is no "Other" in the list of accounts there on the left.just my account. Is this a virus or have I been hacked? Or is this is bug?

User account just showed up on my friend's iMac, and she did not create it. It was created with full admin privileges, and we are trying to determine when it was created. Is there a log or other system utility that will give me this information?

The other day I decided to reinstall OSX from scratch (Lion). So, formatted and reinstalled. Reinstalled all the programs and updates I wanted manually, then used my TM back up to recover my iTunes, documents and pictures. This is where problems began as my new account (Alex Mason) was named exactly the same as the old one present in the TM backup. Migration assistant created a new user account (Alex Mason2). So I have my new set up in one account and my old documents in another! So I got into the USER directory and transfered them between accounts. So far so good.Â
Then came the issue of removing the Alex Mason2 account. At first this was straight forward. Go to the user accounts pref pane, select Alex Mason2 in other accounts and press the "-" sign. Done.Â
But then, it reappeared! And this time I couldnt get rid. I found this on the support forum here: [URL]...and I followed it to the letter. It describes exactly my situation, that a 2nd user account created because of a name clash when using migration assistant may reappear after initial deletion.Â
After doing so, the account Alex Mason appeared in its place in the other accounts bit on the pref pane. This confused me because I was logged in as Alex Mason so how could that also be another account? It wasnt there before, so why now? I exited the pref pane to see if that sorted things out.Â
Then I couldnt get back on the user accounts pref pane as OSX said it could not load it!. In the hope of sorting things out again, I restarted the iMac only to be greeted by a grey screen (with the cloth texture) and a user + password dialogue box that were empty. Putting my credentials in resulted in a loading icon in the password box and that was it!! Nothing. Nada. Can't log in.Â
I tried repairing permissions (of which some were repaired) and got the same result. I restored via TimeMachine and deleted the second account again. Same again, it disappears but the login name still appears at the log in screen and shortly after, the user re-appears in the user account pref pane again and this time I can't use "-" to delete it. I am wary of trying the above link again. What did I do wrong?! and how can I deleted that second account!

Couldn't log in to iMac after there was a power outage. Well, sure enough when I inserted the factory startup disk and tried to change the password on the user account the only accounts that were available were the root and guest accounts.
I ran disk repair twice. The first time I got a message that the repair couldn't be completed. I tried again and it was successful. The odd thing is that the user account folder "m1301" seems to be there but it's not recognized as a viable user.

I recently and accidentally activated the mobile features to my account here at work. Since then, links to volumes have changed and I'm not sure what else has changed on my account. I was actually trying to setup screen sharing between my personal Macbook and my Work iMac, but failed. disable that feature on my account? Also, why are the Mobile account settings grayed out?

I recently logged into [URL] to change my Apple ID. Everything worked fine and I was able to change and sync everything on my iPhone and iPad, except for my iMac. When I enter the Users & Groups section to change the Apple ID associated with my Admin account, it only allows me to add additional Apple IDs and delete those, but not the original Apple ID. I've tried double clicking on the original Apple ID and change it there, but it only creates a different Apple ID when I click done. Now I have multiple Apple IDs and I only want to see one.

iMac 2.16 GHZ IntelCore 2 Duo with 2GB RAM running OS 10.5.8. After switching from one user account to the Admin User Account the kernel panic message 'You need to restart you computer' appeared. After holding down the power button and restarting, I tried to login to the same account but got the same error message. Tried again and still same message. I then restarted using the install disk and used Disk Utility to repair the disk. Â
Disk Utility reported missing thread record, incorrect number of threads, invalid volume file count (It should be 823873 instead of 823874) incorrect number of extended attributres and missing directory record and then it continuted to repair the disk and then showed invalid volume file count error again but this time it displayed (It should be 823874 instead of 823873) For some reason the numbers were swapped round from the earlier message. It continued to repair and reported that the Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.Â
I restarted the mac and logged into Admin User Account and got the 'You need to restart your computer' message again. After restarting I logged into the other 3 user accounts and they all work perfectly but each time I log onto the Admin User Account the 'restart computer' message appears. Is there any way to repair the Admin User Account without having to re-format the hard drive and re-install everything from scratch?
