I just bought the 2TB TC about a month ago. Now that the improved TC is about to be released I'm going to swap out the current one for the newer one.My question is do I have to do anything before I swap them out? Probably just a clean swipe of the data on the current TC, but anything else? How do I erase everything on the current time capsule?
View 1 RepliesI'm getting ready to split my household for a year, (wife's going to school 1,000 miles away) and I want to give her a good backup solution for her MacBook. Right now I've got a 500GB Time Capsule running our network with her MacBook, my MacBook Air, and an old 12" Powerbook sharing the TC drive.I can cobble together an AEBS and a 500GB USB drive to make a homegrown Time Capsule for $291.97 shipped. Or I can buy another 500GB TC for $299, knowing it will work as planned. (We had some initial problems, but sorted them out and now the TC is awesome.)My question is, in a year when we're living together again, am I going to have a use for two Time Capsules? Can one be set up as a bridge and just share the drive, as sort of a NAS? If not, then I might as well just get the AEBS and USB drive, then I'll have those two components later.

I was at Best Buy today and happened to walk over by the Mac section, and saw a sign saying that the 2TB Time Capsule was only $249.99. Needless to say, I bit the bullet. When I got up to the register, one of the girls rang me up, and the guy next to her was sort of in awe at how much the discount was, so it seems like this was pretty brand new. I asked them if this was happening in all Best Buy stores, and they said that they believed that this was the case. Oddly, only the 2TB ones were discounted, and not the 1TB. So this made the 2TB about $85 cheaper than the 1TB, since at Best Buy, the 1TB sells for $334.00
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 13" MacBook, and I'm swapping out the factory-installed 120 GB hard drive for a 320 GB one. I have been using it with the 120 GB disk, and I want to make a copy of it on the larger disk before I swap them. I have a fairly good idea of what to do, but I don't want to risk losing data, so I want to check and see what the best way to do this would be.Here's what I was thinking: along with the new drive, I bought an external enclosure. So, I was going to put the new disk in there, connect it to the computer with the original disk, and copy a clone of the internal disk to it. I was thinking of using Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner to do this (although I have never done that, so I'd appreciate it if you could walk me through making a bootable clone with either one). Then, once I essentially have two disks which are clones, I'll swap out the old disk for the new one (I know how to do the physical installation).

I have looked all over but all I can find is about failures. I am considering a new 1TB Time Capsule but obviously don't want to buy a product that will fail.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got my Time Capsule with the original batch in February '08 A few hiccups which needed the plug/unplug technique, but overall OK until this am that is.I noted that TC had no light showing.On turning power off and on there is a sudden glimpse of the green light, followed by about 20 secs of a steady amber light, then no light no power .Dead.I tried resetting during the steady amber phase , got the rapid flashing, but it ended with no light again.No sound of any attempt by the drive to start.

I have a Nintendo DS which cannot access WPA encrypted networks, so I wondered if I could get a newer Time Capsule and create a guest network for the DS which would be encrypted by WEP.I saw something that said guest networks could only use WPA or WPA2, so that is why I am wondering.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two Time Capsules, TC1 and TC2. TC1 is the base unit, connected to the modem and broadcasting a wireless network from my bedroom. I want to set up the second Time Capsule, TC2, to pick up the in the living room. In that way, I can connect my TV through an Ethernet cable directly to TC2.I keep screwing this up. TC1 is set up to "create a wireless network," which it does. The security I'm using is WEP transitional, for 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n.Currently TC2 is set up as a bridge, but it only works when it's tethered directly through an Ethernet cable coming from one of the LAN ports on TC1 into the the singular WAN port on TC2. And it only works when TC2's wireless mode is "Create a wireless network." I've tried various bridge/wireless configurations but nothing quite works. I consulted Apple's pdf on "Designing Airport Networks 10-5" but the information on creating a WDS network doesn't apply. When I try to make TC1 the base unit for the WDS network, I don't get that option.

But anyways, me and my roommate both own Time Capsules, and both want to be able to connect to our own capsules, but we are obviously sharing the same internet connection. Is it possible to just plug the modem into one of the capsules, and then just plug the other capsule into that capsule? This way would there be two seperate networks that we could individually connect to and sync with?

Here's the dilemma: My 2 1/2 year old MP got replaced under AppleCare by my local Apple store with a new Nehalem MP when they couldn't fix it. The 3 user installed drives in my old MP were good, so they moved them from my old MP to my new one. One of those was the boot drive in my old MP, so the Apple store tech made it the boot drive in my new one. I had the drives arranged in order on my old MP (being the anal engineer that I am), however now my old boot drive is in bay 4, the newer MP boot drive is in bay 2, etc., i.e. all mixed up. Being that the old drives were almost 3 years old I decided to clone my old boot drive to the newer one and make it the startup drive, assuming that it being newer it would be more reliable long term. That all went fine.
Now I know that the OS doesn't care in which bay what drive is but does Time Machine? If I swap around the bays to put my boot drive into bay 1 from bay 2 will that confuse Time Machine and make it backup everything again, i.e. wasting backup space??? I.e., does TM go off of physical name and location or does it go off of logical name?? I know it doesn't matter which drive is where, but I just like having things in a certain order to troubleshooting purposes just in case.

I've got a 4 year old iMac. I have a Time Capsule and make daily backups. My question is if, err when, this iMac dies and I spring for a new shiny one, will my backup reconstitute my new machine with my current apps and data, or just the saved data?

It replaced all of that data with my old iphone 3G data (data being music, texts, call history, photos, music.) It's like my phone went back in time.. This all happened when I backed my phone up last night. I guess I accidentally backed my phone up to my old stuff. I don't know if I have my iPhone 4 info backed up somewhere..

The though is that if there is fire or theft, it won't help to have a hard drive onsite attached to the computer, because both the iMac and the hard drive could be lost. Is Time Machine smart enough to allow me to configure two drives, so that whenever I plug in one of the drives, it can figure out what needs to be backed up?

I know there are numerous posts already about whether to 'clean install' or upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I can't seem to find an answer to my question anywhere.
I have two computers that I've already upgraded to Snow Leopard - an iMac that's about a year old (with data on it that has been migrated between macs since Tiger) and a brand new MBP which is unblighted by any migrated data. The MBP seems much faster for the upgrade, but the iMac seems a little slower.
My instinct here is to erase my iMac hard drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch, which would presumably solve the sluggish performance issues.
My question is this: I have all my iMac data backed up on Time Machine. Is performing a clean install and then restoring my mac from Time Machine going to give me exactly the same problems as upgrading did? Or would it be better to selectively move data back to my iMac after a clean install?
If I need to do this the hard way (as I suspect) and selectively bring back my data to leave the junk behind, is there anything I can do before running a clean install to make this more painless?
I had issues with my old hard drive that kept from using time machine, address book syncing with mobile me, shutting down, disk repair, and permissions repair. Next, I did extensive research on each issue and realized the best thing to do was upgrade my hard-drive (from 110 Gigs to 500 Gigs and an additional gig of memory) and start fresh with Snow Leopard I used carbon copy to do a complete bootable copy of my previous hard drive. I do not have any time machine backups. I opted to save time and have a local shop (Onyx here in Atlanta) do the HD install I did not have them do a data move or port. So now I am left with getting all my necessary apps, preferences, and other data (photos, iTunes, etc...) either installed and updated or moved from the old hard-drive.
I've run across a few threads on here that talk about these items but I still have a few questions. Some are basic so please forgive me. Will I have any problems reinstalling the applications (like iWork, MS Office 08, Adobe Acrobat 8, Omni Focus, Omni Notetaker, and/or other paid apps) with the serial numbers used on my previous hard-drive? Is it better to reinstall these apps or move them over? How does one move over apps? Is it best to the migration tool? (I've never used the migration tool)
I don't want to corrupt my permissions or library files as I had done on my previous harddrive. So will using the migration tool to move apps over move over the corrupted or troubled library files associated with particular apps? Are there good threads that speak to these particular issues? Also, are there helpful guides, online bo oks or sites that speak to these issues? I do want to get a clean start but there are some things I dont' want to lose. Things like my bookmarks in Firefox and Safari, my OmniFocus database. Lastly, the technician thought my original 110 gig hard-drive was about physically die due to how slowly it shut down and given the issues I was having. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Fortunately I have a 1TB My Passport Time Machine Backup that contains all my data. I had spent hours to reintsall Snow leopard, update the machine and then upgrade to Lion. I have a 15 inch 2010 MBP. When I got it, I migrated all my info from my previous MB. About 4-5 months into using it I started having issues w/ Kernel Panics. I did upgrade the HDD and RAM but the Kernel Panics happened before all of that. I took it to the Apple store and they ran some test on the hardware and software and said they couldn't find anything. Their advice was to just do a clean install. I wanted to avoid doing a clean install on all costs. Anyhow, I said what the who last night and backed up important files and did the clean install,
I have to say that the computer feels much more stable now. I was having a lot of little issues w/ Snow Leopard prior to the clean install. Most of that probably comes w/ me playing around w/ settings a bit too much. Also, I'll admit, I do torrent some software. In my opinion, thats what caused the kernel panics. Only time will tell if I continue to get kernel panics even after a clean install, but I think I'm good to go. So, do you guys prefer doing clean installs or just migrating your data? When Lion comes out, will you clean install or migrate to it?
I have two computers in different locations and want to use time machine to keep them both current. Spend about 6 months in each location and got tired of transporting the iMacs. One of the iMacs is a mid 2010, the other is brand new. When I try to restore from the new machine to the old one, it doesn't work. Keeps waiting for a permission.

Can I connect a 1 TB Time Capsule to essentially "back up my Time Machine back up"?
So I want to have (3) 1 TB HDD's, (2) in the Mac Pro, and (1) in the Time Capsule, all with the same information. I basically need to know if the software is set up for a 1X's backup only, or can it copy the same information again as a redundant backup?
