Hardware :: OS X Displays Odd On Non-cinema Display Screen?
Nov 12, 2010
I have a Samsung 204B 4:3 21" screen and a 20" Cinema Display from 2004. I want to use the samsung because I prefer 4:3 ratios, but OS X looks seriously on it. I know its something with OS X, because Windows appears nice and crisp.

I've just brought a 24" Cinema Display for my Mac Pro, and it is absolutely stunning! However, sitting in front of it a few nights ago, I noticed a tiny money spider walking across the screen, and then stop in the middle. I tried blowing it away, but it seemed quite determined to stay put, so I tried to brush it off, but it remained in the same place! I tried again, and it started to walk away?
Now quite bemused, I took a closer look, and soon realised it was actually walking on the inside of the glass! It tends to avoid bright areas on the screen, and keeps to the dark areas, which is fun if you move a window towards it :-) Just hope it doesn't die on a visible part of the screen, or decide to make a web. Maybe for good luck I should remove the glass and let it run free?

I searched for at least 20 minutes on this subject and can't find anything relating.
A friend of mine will sell me an aluminum 23" that works absolutely perfectly. The issue is a 3-4 inch scratch on the screen.

I just got the brand new 15" MBP with high res screen, and it is paired with the 24" cinema display.
First thing I noticed is the colors are way off between the two monitors and it is very annoying....I have tried calibrating both with no results, they just have way different profiles to be able to match them.

At the weekend I had to leave my Mac on for our Tech support team to fix something remotely.
It seems they set the monitor to not go to sleep and I came back on Tuesday (we were snowed out on Monday) to a monitor that had been on for 3 days solidly.
I have a picture on my desktop that I took in Iceland and now I also have a burned in outline of the icebergs across the bottom third of my screen.
It's most noticeable across darker backgrounds and is a total pain because I'm working with graphics and page layout and have a ribbon of discolouration running through everything.
Is there a way to get rid of this? other than leaving a complex screen saver running overnight?

Which monitor has better resolution... an ACD or the screen of an iMac?
I'm asking this because I'm thinking on selling my 30" ACD and my 17" MBP so I can buy a 24" iMac and a 15" Macbook Pro

My dad has given me a cinema display, 20 inch, about 2 years old. Looks good however, i'm only able to keep it if i can fix it. When someone packed it up into the box they have squashed the box pushing the plug into the screen causing it to pierce the screen slightly and cracking it.

I very much wish to upgrade to a larger screen. I presently have the Apple 24" display. I am a professor and often need to use 2 or more documents to complete a piece of work, e.g. an exam or grant application. When I see the 30" display, it seems sooooo big, I back off, for I fear it will be overwhelming to use.I imagine a 27" display would be fine, although I much prefer the matte finish. I assume Apple will sometime soon offer a 27".

A weird thing has started happening to my Mac Pro today. After using it for a few minutes the cinema display it is attached to on the Mac Pro just goes black. The Mac Pro is clearly still on - the light is on and i can hear the fans. The Mac Pro shows up on my local network and i can connect to it and access files from my Macbook, but screen sharing doesn't work (i just get the message 'contacting mac pro' and nothing else) and i can't connect to shared iTunes library either, which makes me think it is not just a display issue. I cannot wake the computer with the mouse or keyboard, which makes me think it isn't just a sleep issue. All i can do is physically turn the Mac Pro off, start it up and it will start up successfully and then work for a few more minutes before i get the same problem. I have reset the PRAM and SMC and still have the same problems. Can anyone suggest anything else i can try?
I should mention that i have another problem with the Mac Pro in that it has been spontaneously waking up from sleep and starting up from shutdown, and i still haven't resolved this. I don't know if it is connected to the above issue.

So I have (3) 24" LED Cinema Display's being driven by 3 seperate GT 120's in my 2009 MP, can I also drive a 46" LCD from the one of the DVI outputs of the video card?
I was hoping to mainly stream CNN or similar news outlet to the LCD to avoid paying the cable company the hefty premium they charge for basic cable in office buildings....

I'd like to purchase one of Apple's new LED Cinema Displays but I don't own one of the new MacBook Pros.
At the moment I've got the original MacBook Pro and a G5. I was hoping to hook the new display up to my G5.
Is this completely impossible or is there a converter that will enable either of these Macs to connect up to the display?

Do the old Apple Cinema Displays work with the new Mac Pros?
I am sure its a dumb question, but i have an older mac cinema display with the pins not mini dvi, that will work on the new mac pros right?
Sorry for the dumb question, I just know apple loves to keep changing those plugs.

I need a glossy screen display to go with my 21.5" iMac. All the 21.5" IPS displays I have found (Dell, HP, LG) have a matte screen. Didn't Apple make both a 24" and 30" display at the same time? What gives?

I've been a mac guy since 1990 and for the last five years have settled into a nice PowerMac G5 with the dual 2.0 processors with the 20" Apple Cinema Display.
I did search on this but couldn't find anything specific, but I am considering adding a second 23" Apple Cinema Display to my set-up for a dual monitor workstation.
I have the ATI Radeon 9600 video card with two DVI ports. I have my 20" plugged in to port 1 and it's running at 1680x1050 resolution (the highest). When I add the second monitor, will BOTH monitors be able to run at their highest resolutions? Or do I need to add another video card?
I had heard rumor that resolutions are a trade-off: if your card is split between two monitors, then the resolution splits, true?
If I can run both at the highest res, then I'll pull the trigger and get the extra monitor. I'm assuming there's someone here who has done the exact same thing?

I have the new MacBook Pro and am interested in hooking up two of the new 24" LED Cinema Displays. Is this possible? I assume it would take some sort of splitter? Is there such an animal yet?
I currently have a 23" Cinema Display but, I think two 24's would look best side by side. ...or two 23"s side by side.

I've had little luck with getting uniform backlighting on the LED Cinema Displays, and after my second exchange, Apple wants to start taking a look at my display before I exchange again. Unfortunately I live a long way away from any Apple Stores, so driving up to one isn't really an option.
But in any case, getting a good display seems to be somewhat of a lottery - I've been wondering if perhaps a repair is a better option. I'm going to be moving to a city with an Apple store later this year - since that will fall within my 1 year warranty, do you think they'd repair my display later in the year? And can the ACDs even be repaired, or is it more of a replacement?

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and was thinking about getting a Apple Display to connect it to for watching DVDs and etc. on.
However, would it be possible to use it as a tv?
Googling this resulted in loads of stuff about DVI ports and the like I didn't really understand so just wondering if somebody would please explain whether this was possible or not?

I have a 2008, 3.2Ghz Quad-Core Mac Pro, that's currently running two 30" Cinema displays off of a nVidia GeForce 8800 GT video card. I need to add a third 30" display. Would someone recommend the second video card I'd need to buy?
(The bus on this vintage of Mac Pro is limited to 300w of output, and only the first two slots are PCI x16, 2.0) The 8800 GT is also uses one of the two power outputs on the "Logic Board" via a cable.
In terms of Display Preferences, I need to run one as an extension--two side-by-side--and mirror the other one, which will sit across the studio, connected by a 15' Gefen Dual-Link DVI cable. Currently, I have everything set up and working beautifully, with the exception of the third display working as an extension to one of the mirrored displays.

Is there a solution to have multiple (2-3) 24" Cinema Displays w/mini display port connected to a unibody 15" Macbook Pro?
It seems the BIG achilles heal is that "mini display port" from the display and connecting to an after market box like the Mattrox DualHead2go. This has become VERY frustrating and I may have to buy a couple of non-Apple displays as the solution! I really like my 24" displays but, NEED more real estate ESPECIALLY when running Parallels.

I wonder if anyone has a setup with two 24 inch cinema displays that have speakers integrated into them...
How do the speakers work? Do you run a USB cable to each monitor so you have both sets of speakers working at the same time? Can you configure the monitor on the left to just play audio for the left channel and the monitor on the right to play just audio for the right channel?

I've been offered an original (I presume) Apple HD Cinema Display 23". How does this compare with a modern display? I am looking to add an external screen to my Macbook for image editing. How would one compare to a new TN 20 or 22" display (if calibrated, etc).

Is there anyway to get the power button on the Cinema Displays (aluminum ones) to sleep a MacBook Pro? I have it set up in System Preferences to sleep the computer, but when you tap the button the Sleep, Shutdown, or Restart dialogue pops up (same one you get if you press the power button on the laptop).
