I am having a strange problem with my computer none of the USB ports detect anything when i plug something in when its turned on but if it was plugged in before the computer was turned on it detects them fine.

I've tried all the possible combinations between the MAC and the Monitor but it would seem a random matter.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have a 2wire modem that currently will not recognise my computers anymore. it wont even recognise my airport. i would like to give my virtual osx server DMZ/port foward access so that i can map/vnc/ftp externally (i cant port forward either). for this type of modem, you need to select the computer first then change the port forwarding settings for each computer, but as i cannot see the computer in the first place i am unable to port forward at all. does anybody have any advice for me to reset/renew the modem to search for the machines again? (i have reset the modem numerous times).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a G5 DP 2.0 and have been using it's built in ethernet port connected straight to my BT home hub (adsl/router) for years. Any way I add into the mix a netgear 1000Base layer 2 switch and the G5's ethernet doesn't work, reconnect straight to the router and all is fine. Now tested with new cables and tested on every port on the switch. By the way the port light on the switch don't light up when G5 attached. Now have tried the switch with a g4 and all is fine on every port and supprisingly I've stuck a PCI card in the G5 and that works as well. Just can't work out why the built in won't work through the switch but will direct.

I have a windows hard drive from an old labtop (windows xp) that is failing, and I need to make a backup of it, so I'll remove that hard drive and connect it to a usb port on my macbook pro. Now I need a program that can do that, it can either be windows or mac app sins I also have windows installed on this mac. Here is the problem I bought Norton ghost for this, problem is the Norton ghost has become a terrible app, that rarely works correct these days. I for the life of me could not get the new hard drive to boot after making a complete clone.
The new hard drive works fine with a clean install, and the old hard drive boots fine. Now is there any program you can recommend that you have used to backup a external hard drive onto a file on another computer to then restore that file to another external harddrive and have it boot in the old system.
I was finally converted and have been using my new macbook air for a few days. (13.3" baseline w/ 4GB RAM)Everything is fine (I even installed Windows 7 via bootcamp and no slow down on starts up on both OS) until I connect my 80GB iPod.iTunes said "The iPod is connected to a low-speed USB 1.1 port. For better performace, you should connect it to a high-speed USB 2.0 port, if one is available on your computer."Not only it said it is slow, I have tried copying stuff from my iPod onto the MBA HD and it REALLY is slow. (47 mins estimated time for a 2.6GB file) All softwares are up-to-date coming out of the box.

Can anyone suggest what should I do with Mac Mini 1,83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and my two new Dell monitors?I tried them using their standard VGI cables connected to a VGI port on a Mac Mini - both are dead. Not a single flicker.
My Mac bought from a trusted friend and acts as a practically new machine - but not with my monitors.
P.S. I went through several Mac-related forums and there's abundance of issues with "alien" monitors.
Why can't I hear my music keyboard when it is connected thru the Analog Audio line-in port? Looking at the System Pref. - Sound menu - in-put - Line in Built-in Audio, I can see activity on the input levels when I press the Kawai piano keyboard but no sound is heard. All other sound systems- I-tunes etc are operating properly.

I have a mid-late 2008 MacBook connected to a Dell U2211H monitor using a Mini DisplayPort -> VGA connection.
When I use 1920x1080, I only get 60 Hz and the display is a fuzzy (text). Also, there are black bars. Why?
Will my issues be solved using a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI connection? Or should I exchange it for the 2209?
How many of you would like to see a HDMI Port? Why the miniDisplay port? Why not remove ethernet jack and miniDisplay port and replace it with a HDMI port. That way one HDMI cable feeds digital video AND audio. Am I the only one thinking of this?
View 22 Replies View RelatedI am having issues with my Dual Band 1TB time capsule for some reason the damn ports won't forward I have enabled the correct settings with the ip address and the ports, but when I use a program to test if the ports are open they are always closed, regardless on pc or mac. Does anyone have a solution to this? I even reset my Time capsule to see if it would work, but no luck.

I've just arrived home with a WD My Book Home Edition 1TB external drive. Formatted for Windows it mounted correctly via FireWire and USB.
First things first: I formatted it for the Mac... Mac OS Extended (Journaled), two GUID partition tables. So far so good. Each partition is recognized, each mounts like it should.
Time Machine then backed up my Intel iMac... again, everything's normal. No odd or unusual behavior.
Here's where things get strange.
For whatever reason I formatted the drive via USB. But my intention hereafter is to connect via FireWire... I need each USB port for peripherals.
But the drive isn't recognized through FireWire. I'm asked if I want to initialize it. When reconnected through USB the drive mounts again.
What's going on? Why is the drive recognized when connected via USB but not when connected via FireWire?
Here's the deal, I am so frustrated. I am trying to open port 59152 for Transmission on my Macbook Pro. I have the latest releases of everything, I am using an Airport Extreme base station with an older airport to boost my signal/connect my tivo w/out a wireless adapter.
I have managed to get it open in the past but there was an update or something a month or two ago and at first it was still open and then it closed. I don't know what changed with the update, all I know is that I did n't change anything.
I have granted permission for Transmission to accept incoming connections on the firewall, little snitch allows it too. I have lighthouse, which worked at first but now I don't even know why I bother having it run. I have the port mapped through the airport utility.
PLEASE don't say to go to portforward.com because they haven't updated the Airport section since Leopard came out, yet every search I do someone repeatedly tells the person needing help to go to [URL]
I am going to attach some screen captures so you can see what I've got going on and maybe point out something I've missed.

But when I open up Firefox or Steam or AIM, it all says I'm offline and asks if I would like to connect. I tried restarting, repairing the connection, and almost everything else I can think of.

I tried Firefox and still, the same result. I resetted the modem and the router, but still nothing. The internet connection on my other computer works fine. So I got on the Windows partition and it connects to the internet! So it's just OSX that won't let me connect cause my Windows partition works fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just ordered a new MacBook Pro and it does not have enough USB ports for my needs.If I have a USB 3.0 hub and I mix USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 peripherals on it, will the whole hub/computer USB 3.0 port be slowed down to USB 2.0 speeds?I am thinking back to Firewire, if you have Firewire 800 and 400 devices on the same chain, the whole chain slowed to Firewire 400 speeds.I don't think this is the same with USB but wanted some reassurance..

For anyone wanting to use their Mini Display port connector on their 4870 with a panel that has the standard size display port connector, I've found a source for a cable that works perfectly. It has the mini display port on one end and a full size display port on the other. Cost $19 bucks shipped and works like a champ. The cable is nice and compact, thinner and more flexible than my DVI cable. I'm quite pleased! ( it's the little things.... )

The first problem was that it was stuck on the boot screen, about to try reinstalling and now found out it cant detect my HDD :/

I have some networking experience but I know very little about how VNC operates other than the software does not have to be on a Mac to monitor my activity and I only need to be on the same network. Are there native utilities on my computer (late 2008 MacBook 10.6) that can detect network monitoring? Should I being researching other technologies, other than VNC?
View 1 Replies View RelatedRelevant newbie to the mac world. I have a MBP late 2009. I bought a third party Mini display port to HDMI converter so I can hook the MBP to my 46" Samsung screen.
This works fine, no major issues here. However the picture is not great. I compared watching a standard definition TV show through the MBP then burnt it onto a DVD. The DVD (using the PS3 as my DVD drive, connected via HDMI) had superior quality than through the MBP.
Also the picture does not quite fill the screen. There is a small black border running all the way around the screen. Does not sound significant but when doing the same comparison as above, you notice the difference when via DVD the movie fills the screen. I have played around with the resolution settings. Those that fill the screen chop bits of the mac desktop off, so thats no good either.
So I am wondering why this is? Is it because the mini display port is not a DVI port, hence I am not getting true HD quality picture? How can I overcome this if at all. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as a media hub/HTPC but want to ensure I dont encounter the same problems.

I have a Dell monitor which has a Display port input and I want to use it as a second monitor. The DVI input in the Dell monitor is taken up.
But how do I connect from the mini-display in the iMac to the Display port in Dell monitor ? Doesn't look like aplle sell this connector cable !

I just got an iomega home media network hdd (1tb) and i wanted to back up my macbook pro tht runs on OS X (10.6)
i installed their retrospect (6.1) software and conected the drive with the lan cable provieded by iomega and i did evrything they told me, but the drive doesnt not mount.
my computer doesnot detect the dive and a red light flashes on the drive in between the blue light (which is the only light tht should flash)
I was copying files to my external hard drive (firewire) and finder froze and relaunched. I got the generic error saying that my "device was ejected improperly". Now when I try plugging in my hard drive my Macbook Pro (2008) it won't recognize it. I've tried:
1. Using USB instead of Firewire
2. Checking Disk Utility
3. Checking System Profiler
4. Resetting PRAM
5. Resetting SMC
6. Using Data Rescue 3
Nothing seems to detect my hard drive.
I've but a bit of thought (and research) into this with no avail.
Basically, I'm trying to detect when a screenshot is taken.
The people over at CloudApp say they do it by monitoring the users screenshot path (com.apple.screenshotpath or whatever) and looking for new files that start with "Screen shot". However, this isn't reliable.
The people over at grab.by wouldn't reveal their secret method, but, a search of their help database reveals "Additionally TinyGrab for Mac will not auto-upload images if 'Spotlight' indexing in OS X is disabled."
P.S. I'm a total noob at this. Try to take some time dumbing things down
a hotkey to detect new displays? I plug my Powerbook into my TV often and don't want the little Detect Display icon in my menu bar. It would be much easier just to use a hotkey, or even if I could set up a shortcut to do it.

MY Samsung TV has a native resolution of 1365x768 but the osx only detects and offers 1280 or 1920 (they both look really bad on my TV). I used a mini-DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable. I also tried, without success, to create specific display settings using SwitchResX and DisplayConfigX. (10.5.2) I know that there is not a big difference between 1280 and 1365 but still, it's very annoying espacially that I my old PC with XP detected the right resolution as soon as connected it...
