Hardware :: Can I Use Dell U2311H With MBP 2.2 GHz

Aug 5, 2010

I am thinking of buying a Dell U2311 for use with my Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz.

Is this a good display for my computer? Any problems I might have?

If I buy this monitor, what cables will I need to connect it? I have the DVI adapter that came with my MBP but it is really short. I'll probably need some type of extension cable correct?

Hardware :: Dell U2311H Rotation - How To Configure

Jul 12, 2010

I'm looking to buy the ultrasharp U2311H, I've seen that you can rotate the screen 90 degrees (would be perfect for coding/reading). How does this feature of the display work with the mac? If I physically rotate the screen would the mac recognize the new position or how do you configure it for it to display everything the correct way?

Hardware :: Dell 2407WFP A04 Versus Dell G2410 Versus Dell 2209WA Versus Samsung F2380

Nov 2, 2009

I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.

The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.

I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.

The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.

The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.

Windows On Mac :: Using XP Upgrade With OEM From Old Dell?

Aug 6, 2010

I installed Parallels on my mac, and now I'm trying to figure out how to install Windows XP. I realized that I accidentally purchased the XP Home upgrade package instead of the full version. From what I understand, I can use this to install Windows XP on my mac as long as I have another Windows disc to insert when it asks for proof of my old version. The only old version I have is another XP disc from an older Dell. It's the Dell Windows "reinstallation" disc, branded with Dell. So the question is, will that disc work for me to use the upgrade? My concerns are that they're both XP (can you use XP to upgrade XP?) and the old XP disc is the Dell version. I haven't opened the XP upgrade box yet, and I can still return it, so I'm looking for some confident answers before I move forward with this.

Hardware :: Can RAM From Dell Work On Mac?

Aug 5, 2008

Someone locally happens to be selling "a set of matching 1GB PC2-4200 (DDR2-533) SODIMM RAM, pulled from a working Dell Inspiron 640". Would they work on my powerbook? Or coming from PC, they are not going to?

Complete Apple newbie actually. Just recently bought a MBP and want to get a large independent monitor while im using it at home. As much as I love the Apple display, I cant afford it at this time. I found a really nice Dell LED monitor that has DVI, VGA, HDMI outputs.

How can I hook it up to my MBP? What connectors must I purchase to make it work?

Hardware :: Better Video Card For The Dell?

Aug 7, 2009

Ok I have an original Mac Pro Tower with the Dual 2.66s, my stock video card is the NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT.

I have no complaints, I just bought 2 Dell (cough) 23" monitors (hey there were only 325 each) and the card works fine for them.

I also have an original Apple Cinema display that I have been using for years, talk about quality this display almost never get's shut off just goes into screen saver mode and I've had it since the day they introduced the displays (as a side note i payed 4500 for it LOL )

I am thinking about getting a better video card for the DELLs since they are smoking and brand new, and I would still like to have my Cinema display connected for web browsing, I'm going to build it into my coffee table and make it a "flip up" out of the table. So I will need 2 video cards anyway.

My question is, in the 0-250ish dollar range what would be the best card to get for my system? I know cards have come down a ton, but I'm not sure what will be compatible and the best choice for my Mac.

Laptops :: Propped MBP Beside My Dell E196FP?

Aug 6, 2007

I need a solution where I can plug some cables into my MBP and have a nice large screen for when I'm at home without having to fork out big bucks for a 30" screen. I see that sometimes on desktops people set two monitors beside each other and the graphics card takes them as one display. Would it be possible if I propped my MBP beside my Dell E196FP that I could do the same? It has a native resolution of 1280x1024 I think.

Also If anyone else has a solution to my monitor problem it would be appreciated.

Mac Pro :: Dell 2408WFP Color Calibration?

Jun 25, 2008

I have a Dell 2408WFP on the way, as well as a Mac Pro 2.8 with the HD 2600XT, at long last!

The 2408 was recommended by several users of this site, so I wanted to see if you would be willing to share your calibration settings for the monitor?

I've read here about the important task of recalibrating this monitor and soaked up as much knowledge as a I could (as he does get into his settings a little bit).

Since it seems some of you would have a very similar system to me , I was hoping you could help take a little of the pain out of calibrating it (without an external device) and share all relevant settings with me (monitor settings, color profile, graphics card settings, etc.)

OS X :: Keypad On Dell Keyboard Used With Mac Mini?

Aug 26, 2009

My husband gave me a Mac Mini for my birthday. So far so good but it is a little frustrating learning a new operating system after working with MS Windows since the beginning.

I'm using my Dell flat screen monitor and keyboard and my Microsoft wireless mouse. With MS windows I used the keypad on the right side of the keyboard for the arrows/pgup/pgdn/home, etc. to move around the screen and did not use the number functions (I turned number lock off). With my Mac Mini it only gives me the numbers and the number lock OFF does not work.

Question: how can I turn the number lock off so I can use the arrows/pgup/pgdn/home, etc. on the keypad?

Windows On Mac :: Old Dell Computer Will Not Startup

I have an old dell computer...about three years. And recently (like a few months ago) it kinda died. When I boot it up it comes up with the "DELL" loading screen, except this time it has about a dozen green lines going down the screen. And then after that screen the computer just dies. I think my only choice is a complete wipe of the drive since I can't even get into bios or anything but thought I might post here first.

OS X :: How To Use My IMac As A Monitor For The Dell Computer

Dec 16, 2009

I use an HP 17 inch laptop as well. Set up Airport Extreme and everything seems to be working. Is there a way to use my iMac as a monitor for the Dell computer?

I really love this monitor so much I hate to hook the Dell up to my Dell 24 inch monitor and would rather give up that monitor and gain desk space. The only other option is to use a Samsung 40 inch LED TV as my Dell's monitor.

I use the iMac for video, pictures and music. I have Windows 7 running via Parallels but would rather just use the new Dell as a Windows computer and the iMac for personal use.

IMac :: Swap I7 CPU From Dell Into 27" I5?

Feb 12, 2010

I recently bought a 27" iMac i5, selected over my preferred i7 configuration primarily because I wanted to get it at the local Apple Store and have it be easy to swap in case of screen/build problems. My 27" iMac i5 is beautiful, and hassle free. I just ordered a Dell XPS 8100 with the 2.8 Core i7-860 chip in it - that machine doesn't really NEED the i7, but it was a cheap upgrade on Dell's website. I'm reasonably confident that this is the exact same chip used in the 27" i7 iMac.

So, the question - is it POSSIBLE to swap the i5 in my iMac and the i7 CPU's in my Dell? I know it's difficult (I've previously swapped an SSD into a 20" Aluminum iMac), and I know it would void my warranty, and I may well never actually do it. It's clear that I probably SHOULDN'T do this, but I'm curious as to whether I COULD. So, the question is, "Is there any reason (sockets, size, heat, speed, other incompatibility) why this swap physically wouldn't work?" and next, is there anything beyond a physcial swapI need to do to make it work? reset anything on the Dell for it to accept the i5?

Hardware :: Calibrating DELL U2711 Display

Nov 24, 2010

i have recently spent several evenings re-calibrating my Dell U2711 display and have finally come up with a fantastic image so I thought I'd share my results for those having trouble calibrating this display (given the low quality AG coating this display comes with, calibration can be quite tough). Plus, during my Google search, trying to find some calibration tips, I was surprised at how little I found. Most of the forums I went to are discussions about the AG coating with hardly any talk about calibration. So, because of that, I figured I should share my calibration steps.

I edit video so I managed to come up with a calibration that shows great shadow detail (without crushing the blacks) yet still gives a deep, rich look for the graphics as well. Everything from the highs to the lows look great! And parts of the screen such as the dock look so vivid it's hard to distinguish from an Apple Display in terms of richness and clarity (without the shine, of course). You can still see the grain of the AG coating on bright areas of the screen but it's hardly distracting at all. On a side note: this is a great display for editing video even with the AG coating but if you edit still photography I would stay away from the U2711 entirely: still image + still grain = disaster!

Unfortunately I don't know much about internal computer system settings or if all displays that Dell ships are identical, so I can't say for sure that the calibration I did will work for everyone. However, if all Dell Displays and Apple computers (I use a 2010 MacPro) are 100% identical when shipped, then, if you follow my steps exactly, you should be able to come up with something similar to what I got. But I can't say for sure:

Step 1: Setting up the display.

Set the contrast to 100% and the brightness to 80%. Set the Gamma to (Mac), the Mode Selection to (Graphics), and the Preset Mode to (Custom Color). Now, in custom color leave the green at 100% and set both the Red and Blue to 98%.

Step 2: Setting up the Mac.

Run your Mac's Display Calibration Assistant (located in the Display section of System Preferences). Select the checkbox for Expert Mode and keep clicking continue till you get to the section with the lined boxes with the Apple logo in the middle.

Now, for all 5 'lined box' steps, make the Apple logo disappear using only the left slider (do not touch the right slider at all). To make the Apple logo disappear (blend into the box) you must squint your eyes until the lines that make up the box itself become one solid color (my eyes were about 75% closed). Take your time and make sure you are confident that the Logo is gone.

Then, when you come to the gamma screen either select 2.2 or 2.15 - the proper setting should be 2.2, however, I found the blacks to be not as deep as I'd like them to be (most likely because of the AG coating) so I choose 2.15 which I found to be the key to giving the display the richness it needs to look great.

When you get to the 'Target White Point' screen, select the checkbox 'use native white point'.

Then save you calibration profile and exit the assistant. Now go back to your Dell display settings and set the brightness to 100% and you should be good to go! Note: if you find your screen to be a little too dark, re-calibrate but try selecting 70% or 60% for the brightness during step one. That way, when you raise the brightness to 100% at the end, it should be somewhat brighter.

I hope this works as great for you as it did me! And even if it doesn't, hopefully you will end up with something half decent. But either way, please do share your results - I know there are a lot of people out there struggling with this display because of it's AG coating and some are even attempting to remove the AG coating with bad results. I even considered removing mine but now I am glad I didn't take the risk (I suck at doing those type of mods, haha). Now, my display looks almost as good as an Apple display (and without any glare!
