Applications :: Program - Keep Personal Journal / Diary
Sep 24, 2009
I am looking for a program that I can use to keep a personal journal/diary. I would like it to have some of the features of a modern blog such as incorporating pictures, video, etc., but I would like everything stored locally. I am experimenting with Journler [URL] but there are some things I don't like about it, and since I plan on using it regularly for years to come, I want it to be as perfect as possible. One thing I would definitely like is the option to change the date on entries since many of my entries are in retrospect. Also, it looks like Journler is going defunct.

Just wondering if anyone uses Papers out there and I am with a query. I have a subscription to the PRS journal and was hoping to have papers auto download the articles each month. Can this be done?

I use a HP Compaq Tablet PC at work every day. It's a convertible tablet/laptop. I use Windows Journal to write with a pen stylus onto a notebook-lined template or to a graph paper template. I just hate my work computer.
I'm seriously thinking of buying my own Mac notebook and using an external tablet or slate by Wacom. (or purchasing a Modbook)
Is there any Mac software similar to Windows Journal?
I've looked at Evernote, Journler, Circus Ponies Notebook, SoHo notes, Zengobi Curio, The Omni Group, MacJournal. None of them are similar to WIndows Journal. Circus Ponies Notebook comes closest.

I'm looking for a free personal budgeting program to balance my finances and plan for the rocky road ahead (grad school). Does anyone have any recommendations? My only real requirement is that I'm able to add categories/sub-categories for expenses/income (not too demanding). I gave Buddy a try, but I didn't like the layout and how it sub-categorized everything under it's own titles.

As the title says I am looking for database software for my desktop (latest gen 27 iMac core i7). I am a science major and a data monger, so I have tons of scientific papers, articles, blogs, my own documents etc. I have quite a collection, and find my self relying on it more than on google when I want an answer fast. However, I know there has to be a better solution. I have done some filemaker work, but it is too damn expensive so I don't know if I can justify the cost of me buying it my self.

First time poster who just recently made the switch from pc to my new macbook pro and loving it though i'm still learning the ropes so be gentle with me
Back in my windows days i used a choice little program called keePass to handle all my logins/passwords/serial keys etc etc not so much as to automatically fill them in for me but just as a record. Now that i've made the switch i've been having to keep a pretty messy rtf document until a better solution comes along. Any applications come to mind?

So I am selling my early 2011 MacBook Pro and have been having a lot of trouble getting people to buy it at my asking price... So I was thinking of ways I can get it at the price I wanted and thought to use the software on the computer as a selling point. Well it worked and I have all of adobe CS5 on it along with Microsoft Office for mac and windows 7 as a partition. Well I got a buyer who is interested primarily because of the software and I want to sell it but just keep the applications on it. What can I do to protect myself by getting rid of any personal information? Do I just go to my key chain and wipe it clean and wipe all my documents? The licensing for the applications won't be an issue for me so I don't care about that.

I want to capture selections on my screen and add comments. Is there a program out there that will allow me to do that? I don't like the "grab it" program because it saves the captured file in a Tiff format instead of a Jpeg format.

I got my first Mac yesterday after years of crappy Window PCs....the lower end 15 Mac Pro. I had to get Office to make it compatible with PCs otherwise I would have got iWork. I also use Firefox as my web browser. and i know i dont need antivirus but i would like some type of protection. so my question is: what free programs would protect you against privacy and personal issues such as data or spyware? And against Microsoft Office viruses that it brings in? And I know people don't like Java and you should block it?

I've tried many options and none I felt were that stellar: Cha Ching (now gone), MoneyWell, Money, iBank. iBank I stuck with the longest, actually, but it's really getting on my nerves because the interface is crappy in some spots. The programmers just have no clue about good user interface design, and it's frustrating as hell. Plus they don't listen to input.
This one caught my eye:
(URL)
If anyone has any other recommendations, I'm open. The app must have an iPhone counterpart for syncing, that's a must. Good, usable interface is also a must.

Just like many of you I purchased the Macheist Nanobundle and am looking to finally put the domain names i've been paying for over a year for to use. One will be a personal blog. The second I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do with but I have figured it out.
What i'd like to do is be able to post up RSS news feed items from multiple different websites so that friends and family and read the best of. Basically i'll filter through everything (as I already do) and just forward on the best of items. Currently I have all of my RSS feeds through google reader, and currently read them on NetNewsWire on my mac. Is there a current application or website which will allow me to do this?

I realize this is a tall order, but my husband and I are searching high and low for a personal budgeting software that is compatible with all our electronic portals. I am a die hard Mac user and he will never leave his PC/Blackberry. We're trying to find a program that will sync between the four, allowing us to update transactions while we are on the go. I've seen Splash Money and I'm not too impressed. I think we've exhausted all our options, but just wanted to throw the question out here to see if we've missed anything.

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.

I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.
So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.

Firstly, I'm a hardcore Mac fan and think that Time Machine was great idea. I know it does complete backup, including software and applications. My question is what is preventing the user from installing a time machine restore of another mac on a new one thus giving the new mac the same expensive software for free?
Example: I got a refurbished 2009 i7 iMac and would like to have Photoshop on my iMac too, it currently resides on my MBP. Could I simply do a time machine back up from my MBP to my iMac and get the application pro bono? Just used Migration Assistant and it worked flawlessly! Much better than using time machine.

Hi, so I've been using Blender off and on for about a year and a half and I was thinking about buying a different program. I'd like to keep it under $200 but if its a little over that fine. I was thinking about Silo but I don't really like not having the ability to extrude single vertices and subdivide objects like in Blender. Also if their are any products that have a student discount or something like that for someone in high school that would help too.

At first, it seemed like Adobe makes several programs that do the same thing. But after a bit of research, I found out that they do have target audiences. I hope this guide helps people who are confused.
Dreamweaver vs Contribute.
If you want to build a website, get Dreamweaver. Contribute is designed for people who want to edit their Dreamweaver-built site, and is designed with collaboration in mind, because it edits right off the server.
Personally, I think Contribute is a big-ridden piece of garbage, if it were me, I would stick to Dreamweaver
Photoshop vs Fireworks.
Don't think of Fireworks as a stripped down version of Photoshop. Think of it as a really-really-really-really stripped down version of Flash, smashed together with CorelDRAW. Fireworks was meant to be used to make things like rollover icons, menus, and such for websites. It lets you drag-and-drop squares and circles. Pretty simple
Photoshop, on the other hand, is a powerful, expensive, image editor. Unlike Fireworks, you cannot add any dynamic-ness (word?) to images.
InDesign vs Illustrator.
InDesign is definitely more powerful than Illustrator. If you are just making simple one-page documents, ID might be a bit of an overkill.
Bridge vs Finder
Bridge is worthless. I can't see what it does that Finder doesn't.
Please correct any errors I may have made, as this is just from what I can tell. Hope this helps you with your purchase of overpriced Adobe software.
