Applications :: Remote To Your Computer - How To Know About It
Nov 30, 2009
I have stumbled upon remote desktop for Mac and I currently use a combination of LogMeIn, VNC and Remote Desktop for the PC.
I don't want to have an onslaught of remote applications for my Mac and I am actually leaning towards LogMeIn due to the integration I can have with my iPhone which works wonderfully with my PC LogMeIn.

I am using Apple Remote Desktop to control a Mac OS X Snow Leopard system with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard system. On the computer being controlled, I launch Windows 7 through Parallels Desktop Mac version 6. Once the VM is launched, for some reason it doesn't seem to recognize the keyboard as it will not allow me to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I can use Ctrl-Alt-Delete through the keyboard menu, but I cannot enter in my Windows password.

I am moving to a new job that will be about 30 minutes away from home, and I'd like to be able to access my home Mac Pro. I should have fairly decent internet at the new home and new job, so I'd like to set up some sort of VPN or remote access.
Would having DynDNS and then VNC acccess be the best way to do this? What about setting up a VPN so I can access files from a work machine?

I sometimes need access to my work computer while traveling or even at home. I have found occasionally that my work computer is frozen at a time when I want access. I have set up a IP-address power strip that I can remotely cycle that will allow me to shut it down.

I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.
Info:
MacBook
Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I'm thinking about getting an MBA and using it as a primary computer. My HTPC is pretty powerful and so I was hoping that I would be able to control is via Remote Desktop to do any heavy lifting I need to do. Is it a problem to run remote desktop wirelessly?

Using Remote Desktop 2.0 on a Mac Pro to get into an XP box on my network. About every twentieth attempt it will blue screen the XP box. In order to get around it I must reboot the XP machine, which, is pointless because I am trying to remote into it and I am not in front of it.

Syncing between two remote Macs?
I have two Macs, one at each of two locations (home-office and business). One is a Mac Pro (2009) and the other is a recent MacMini, both with OS-X 10.6 and similar specifications.
Would like to have both machines seamlessly match so that I can travel between them with no loss of application functionality.
There is only one user, so one Mac will always have the more recent data.
I understand that there are work-arounds, such as just replacing everything with a new laptop. Or physically transporting an external drive, perhaps backed up via SuperDuper or Qdea for example.
But a backup/restore can take a long time (at each end). So, is it possible to do this without a hardware sneaker-net solution?
Third-party apps such as ChronoSync and Martian Slingshot would seem to offer some possibilities. But would that work with an Apple Mail database for example?
Obviously, it is the data that needs to be synced, not the apps, but would there be any issues with application licenses (since some Apps look at the machine ID)? And would it be necessary to sync the Library/Application Support files too?
And what about application updates etc?
Cloud solutions such as Dropbox and Mozy are great for smaller files, but some of the databases we use are several Gigs in size, which is way beyond their capability (both in upload time and capacity).
For example, even an iTunes database might have some minor changes each day, which would need to be synced.

I have plugged a Windows XP notebook into my home stereo, installed iTunes on it and have it streaming music from my other Windows XP box upstairs. Everything works perfectly. What I'd like is a suggestion on a make/model remote control (you know, like the tv remote you use every day) that will allow me to do simple operations in iTunes like Next Song, Back, etc.
I have the Apple Mac Mini remote control but it, by default, will not talk to my Windows hardware because there is no Infrared Port (as far as I know). It's not the easiest thing to google. I would assume I could find a Remote Control package that includes the Remote, an Infrared Receiver (that plugs in via USB), and some baseline software for under $30 somewhere.
It needs to be a USB port because I do not have an RS232 jack on my laptop (Dell Mini9). On a side note, I have to say, this setup I created is THE BEST way to stream iTunes music down to my stereo. I have tried numerous products for the past 10 years ranging from Tivo to Logitech's Squeezebox2 and nothing compares to simply 2 computers sharing iTunes. I got the Dell Mini9 for $302 to my door!

I have Apple Remote Desktop 3 installed on my work iMac OS X 10.5 and I can connect to from another Mac no problem. Is there a way to remote to it using Microsoft Remote Desktop running on Vista? Or do I have to use VNC?
If I have to use VNC, I have UltraVNC to connect to my linux box and it works fine. However How do I set it up to remote to apple remote desktop? What port do I use? I use 5901 for the linux box.

Does anyone know of a way to remote control a mac from a web page (with a Java applet or something) that is actually on your computer. I know LogMeIn can be used, but then all of the data goes through the LogMeIn server, and I would like a server that I can run on my mac, independently from any other server.

I may be clutching at straws here but I'm wondering if there is an application that will allow me to access my office Mac from my home Mac, primarily to transfer files I may have forgotten to take home.
The key point here is that I don't leave my office Mac on, so is there a remote app that can also start the office Mac up ready for use remotely? Presumably there is one that would wake it but I prefer to shut down when I leave.

My boss is going on a two week long tour, starting tomorrow, with her MacBook Air and I wanted to be able to assist her should she need any technical help on the go.
The only options I know for Remote Desktop Access are ChickenVNC and Remote Desktop from Apple, but both are a bit complicated depending on the connection you are using. Also, she wouldn't understand how to find her specific IP address, when on a hotel Wifi connection.
I was wondering if any of you have a suggestion for software that is extremely simple to use and would allow me to assist her through screen control, by having her simply opening and/or logging into the program.
