Applications :: Automate Repetitive Actions On Mac
Jun 9, 2009
I have about a gagillion html files that I need to open, run a firefox plugin action and close. At this rate, it's going to take a really long time. I'm wondering if there's a way to automate the action so it performs it on every file in a specified folder?
I'm a Mac switcher from late 2008. I've also added an iPod Touch and Apple TV to our growing stable of Apple devices.
While I've managed to install the necessary applications/hacks to my MB and AppleTV to play AVI's directly without conversion, the iPod Touch is another matter. It of course requires mp4 or h.264 format. I have been using iSquint to do the conversion and then move the mp4's into iTunes which synch fine after that.
However I am looking for a solution where I could drop the AVI files into a folder and the conversion program would automatically watch that folder and run the AVI->MP4 conversion automatically. I can't seem to find a solution to this through my Google searches and forum searches here. Perhaps it's a simple Applescript (or whatever it's called) which I haven't used to date?
I have a downloaded folder with mixed types of files (.jpg and .ttf), I would like to separate them and put them in different folders, but there are hundreds of them and it's time consuming. Does anybody know how to do this?
I understand when I make an automator 'application', it appears and can be drug to the applications folder. But when I make a folder action, or a service or whatever, where does the action go (so I can edit it again, later) or delete it?
I move an action into the workflow space. Now, I realize that I made a mistake (God forbid) and I want to remove that action. PLEASE tell me how in the world do I do that. I click on the 'x' in the top right corner and nothing happens. I click on it and press delete key. Zilch. I even drag it to the trash (out of desperation). Perhaps my Automator.app is corrupt. I can't think of any other reason I'm not able to delete an action from the workflow. How do I reinstall in Snow Leopard? I can't using the install disk because Automator is not one of the apps designated. Can I download it (the app)? I seem to be the only person in the universe that has this problem (not being able to delete an action). I've googled my fingers raw.
I really like iTunes 10. Clean, uncluttered, easily usable. BUT I have an automator action set for 7:30am every day as an alarm to wake me. This action plays a playlist in iTunes called "morning alarm" and has worked for months beautifully. When I loaded the action in Automator I got an error to say that the "play iTunes playlist" action, the auto iPhone sync action and set iTune volume actions we no longer valid. Those actions appear not to exist any longer in iTunes 10. Has anyone else had similar problems? Did you get a work-around?
Does anyone know of any Automator Actions to modify System Preferences? Specifically I have the bottom right screen corner set to do Desktop Exposé when I point the cursor there, and I want to make a workflow to toggle this on and off. I've never used Automator before so I don't know a whole lot about it.
I've been fooling around with Automator for a few hours trying to look for little ways it can handle my repetitive stuff. I've figured out some pretty neat tricks, but I also have a slew of unwanted folder actions and services in my context menus and for the life of my I can't figure out how to get rid of them. The folder actions are especially problematic since they mess with my files automatically. Googling it isn't turning up anything nor can I seem to find anything in Apple's help documents. Is this some kind of huge joke being played on me here or something? Has no one ever wanted to disable their automator tasks before or something?
My Big Disk Extreme (1TB) was working great, until the other day, while on it started making a repetitive "Click" sound. Im assuming this is somehow related to the drive spinning and whatnot, but the problem is it wont mount on the desktop, nor can i find any way to "reset" the hdd. When on, the blue light works just fine, it does not turn Orange or anything. The drive just clicks and wont do anything...
I don't mean to plug URLs but this is what got me started on trying to automate my Mac through twitter. Here What I want to do is when I send a tweet (d iGod_like_iPod mac etrieve contact "Aaron") Mail picks it up sees etrieve contact based on a rule starts a given automator app which turns around and emails my phone that particular contact. What I am having trouble with is after mail initiates the rule based on etrieve contact I have no clue how to copy "Aaron" from the twitter message in mail to pass that on to Automator.
Is it possible to automate the conversion of AVI files to MP4? I'm running Lion and I would like my Macbook Pro to automatically convert my downloaded movies to MP4 and add them to iTunes...
I'm in the process of importing loads of DVDs using HandBrake to have on Apple TV.
But all the files read a bit like this: "FUTURAMA_DISC_1-1" etc etc. and so I'm renaming them "Futurama 1.1, Futurama 1.2" etc. Is there a way of automating this rather dull process?
Also, in finder, if I select a file and hit return to highlight the text, it often deselects itself whilst I'm typing which is becoming infuriating. Sometimes it'll deselect itself half a dozen times before it stays selected and let's me rename the file. It feels like I'm on a Windows PC with such an annoying glitch!
We got a Flip video camera for Christmas, and I'm trying to find a way to easily import the videos into a specific folder on my MBP.
I'm sure there's an automator action or folder action to do this, but I don't even know where to begin for that.
What I want to do is be able to drop the files from the Flip into a specific folder, but I want those files to be automatically renamed into a sequential order once they are dropped in. As it stands, the files are named VID00001, VID00002, etc., and when those are dragged and dropped into a folder on the HDD, the retain that numbering. They are erased from the camera, and the renaming starts all over again.
What I want to do is to be able to drop those new files from the camera into the same folder, and have the numbering pick up at 00003, 00004, etc.
I have a 1TB TimeCapsule that we use for a file server. It has logos, invoices, etc. We have a backup 1TB USB hard drive attached to the TC to backup the TC. Is there a way to automate the backing up? Like once a day or once a week?
I'm not familiar with how to use Automator, Here's what I want to do: How can I open a specific Microsoft Excel document just by pressing a function key or some combination of keys? I'd like to be able to do this from any program.
New Mac user here. I've got EyeTV running so that it automatically exports certain TV episodes to my ITunes library (watchable on an Apple TV). I was wondering if it's possible to script something that runs automatically and deletes old episodes of TV shows in my ITunes library so that I don't completely fill up my hard drive?
I recently pulled out my old Halo cd, and it looks great on my 13" MBP. I don't wanna lug around the CD all the time though, so I copied it as a .dmg to my harddrive. Every time I start Halo, I have to open Toast, mount the .dmg, close toast and then open Halo. Is there some way for these four actions to be compiled into a single button in for example the dock?
Every time I add something to my Dropbox, I get a pop-up saying "3 items have been added to your folder...would you like to view them?" I didn't enable anything on the computer.
has anyone achieved/know how to achieve this? drag and drop a wav, mp4, ogg, etc onto a folder and have it covert to an mp3. is there a audio converter app that plays nice with folder actions?
I have two objects in keynote that do about 14 moves each (spin and move) but I can not get them to go at the same time. The next one will only start when the first one ends. I can't move the second object to the top of the build order because when I do that it ruins all the spin/move steps. Want I kinda need is the ability to run step 13 with step one (whilst leaving the build order in the same rank)..unless somebody has got another way to do this?
I have set up and sucessfully tested a workflow which sends any file found in a particular folder to the "paperless" app, then moves all files to a different folder called "Archived attachments".HOWEVER as a folder action, nothing happens when a file is put into the folder. The file just sits there in the folder. To create a folder action I opened "new folder action" in Automator, then dragged and dropped the working workflow file into the workspace, then set "Folder Action recieves files and folders added to" the appropriate folder, let's call it "Attachments".Just to complicate things, the files are placed into the "Attachments" folder using an applescript that captures all pdf mail attachments. This applescript works succesfully. [code]
This morning, I was running late for work and while getting ready, I glanced over at my mac and noticed windows moving around. I initially thought that maybe it was a fluke, but then I looked closer and there were some deliberate actions taking place:, folders opening, folder being created on the desktop. I watched for a few seconds to try to figure out what was going on, but then I got freaked out and try to see if I could control the cursor, nothing. So I held the power button down and hard shut down my computer. I started it back up to see if everything was alright. I looked in the trashbin to see if anything was deleted recently, nothing. I shut down my computer and went to work.
- Does anyone have any ideas what this could have been? A trojan? A program installed by an untrusting girlfriend? etc? - What can I do to protect/secure my computer? - Are there any network log files on the computer that I could find an IP address of whoever this was? - I have updated my computer recently (when itunes 8.1 came out), so I should have the most up to date security patches (for 10.5).
Anytime I do something on the dock that involves a noise happening (emptying trash, adium message, etc.) the noise isn't in sync with action. It is either way after or way before. This is only on my i7 iMac which I received yesterday. Again small issue but anyone have any ideas on this? Is this normal and I just haven't noticed it on any of my other (Leopard only, not SL) macs?
I managed to fumble my way through my first Automator actions today and after some trial and error, came up with a folder action that does exactly what I want, very simply to move music from my downloads folder to a different location. I also created an Automator application to do the same thing as I wasn't aware my folder action will now do this automatically (so cool). Here's my question: I have a few folder actions that were created during my trial and error process. Where are these and how do I delete/remove them? I did a Spotlight search and nothing came up.
I'm new here but hoping I can find some helpful information for a new problem I have with OS X. Earlier today, I noticed that my Transmission was failing to download some torrents I was snatching. Transmission couldn't create the folders I was telling it to create for new CDs in my MUSIC folder. When I looked into the problem, I noticed that I no longer had the option to create new folders and several other modification options. I created a new folder on the desktop and dragged it into the misbehaving MUSIC folder and my MacBook asked me for my password to "authenticate". What's going on? I have not encountered this issue before and it is only effecting the MUSIC folder; all of the sub-folders are functioning correctly.
