2011 Macbook Pro Sluggish And Poor Battery Life

Jul 6, 2012

I have a 13 month old macbook pro. Recently it has been operating VERY sluggishly. Its slow/jumpy when scrolling through internet pages, through documents, pictures, downloads etc. The little rainbow 'loading' icon (i'm sorry i'm not sure what it's called) seems to appear all the time, when doing most things.I've also noticed that my battery life has gone appaling. I charge it up and get a couple of hours tops now and the 'time remaining' icon jumps up and down massively now rather than remaining relatively constant.

MacBook Pro :: Very Poor Battery Life?

Jun 2, 2012

I know this has been asked many times before but seeing as im a new mac user ill ask anyways. I bought my Macbook pro 13" i5 yesterday and have noticed the very poor battery life. A partial reason i bought a mac was because of the long battery life advertised. My battery is lasting 3 hours off charge ( the same as my 3 year old eePc) I have called support but unfortunately being a Sunday no one is available to chat. Lets see my chances on here. What can I do to make my battery life last longer than 3 hours!?It the battery drains even when im just browsing the net with no other applications open... as im writing this it has already drained from 59%-50% within a 10 minute time span..

Mac :: 13" Macbook Pro Poor Battery Life

Aug 10, 2009

I just bought a 13" MBP over the weekend as an upgrade to my original series white Macbook bought July 2006.My understanding is that the battery is rated for 7-8hours. Yet I do not see any improvement over my previous 3yr old Macbook regarding battery life.Right now, I have the screen set on dimest, nothing else running other than the browser, battery is at 80% and it says 4 hours remaining. What gives?I have had this Macbook and my old white macbook sitting next to each other doing pretty much the same thing and the % battery remaining seemed to track pretty close between them. The new Macbook doing better, but not by much.I used migration assistant to copy over the system. But I've done a new install since then. Could it somehow remember the old Macbook's battery performance?

MacBook Air :: Battery Life With Flash Video Seemed Poor?

Nov 28, 2010

I used my 13.3/1.86/4GB MBA to watch football today and was pretty surprised with the poor battery results. Would this seem normal?

Took off charger at 11:45AM CST, battery 100%Apps open - Mail, Chrome, Parallels with Win XP running, no XP apps open11:45-12:00pm - Simple browsing, no flash running (I use FlashBlock)12:00pm - I start up one window for NFL Sunday Ticket Online, Flash fullscreen video and one window for my Yahoo Fantasy Sports which also uses Flash. For the bulk of the time the NFL game is on fullscreen video with my Fantasy app running in the background1:15pm - I notice my battery is down to 48% with approx 1 hr 10 min remaining. I check my screen brightness and it is at 100% (not sure why), I reduce brightness to 50%1:15 - I use the computer same as at 12:00pm but now at 50% brightness
2:20 - My computer goes into hibernation (there was a low battery warning about 5-10 mins earlier.

So I essentially got 2 1/2 hours of usage with the bulk being heavy usage with flash. For the bulk of the time the computer was using 50-60% of the processor and the exhaust was about 3400rpm (the fan was audible but not loud). Does this usage time seem normal for what I did? I would have expected at least to get 4-5 hours with a 13.3 using flash. Also I was surprised that the battery life didn't improve at all after dropping screen brightness from 100% to 50%.

MacBook Air :: Poor Battery Life - 3 Hours With Normal Use

Feb 21, 2008

I can't seem to get 3 hours of life out of this battery and I wanted to know if I was alone on this. I've drained it multiple times and my capacity is at 4829. Sure, with the screen dimmed all the way and everything turned off I can reach 4 hours, but that's not why I purchased this machine. With my screen on max, no bluetooth, and WiFi on, I struggle to get 3 hours. This is with normal web-browsing, typing in word, etc. Forget about watching a movie, because the time remaining will just drop like a rock. I don't recall what the max capacity was on these batteries. If it's 5200, then I'm already at ~93%. At what point do I go into Apple to demand a new one?

MacBook Pro :: Poor Battery Life With No Service Option?

Jul 19, 2009

I've been getting poor battery life on my MBP for about a month now. I get like 90 minutes to 2 hours max with brightness down and bluetooth off. I tried calibrating to no avail, and finally I'd had enough and called Apple.

I still have 8 months left on my original warranty. The guy on the phone told me that unless I bought Apple Care for the extended phone support, he could not help me. So I said fine, should I just go into the Apple Store? He said no, they would refer me back to him and he still couldn't help me. So I asked him if my one year warranty included battery problems like I'd outlined, and he said yes, but that I'd need phone support. WTF?

Okay, that makes zero sense and I'm annoyed now with his endless loop of nothing. Basically I can't get a part of my purchase that's covered under warranty taken care of because I haven't bought Apple Care yet? That's ridiculous. Has anyone else heard of this? Of course, I always buy Apple Care for my products, but when I purchase it varies within the first year based on when I have the money.I made a Genius Bar appointment, but I was really hoping to not have to go there today. Just wondering if anyone has some insight on this.

MacBook Air :: Poor Battery Life With 13.3" 4gigs Ram Variant?

Nov 15, 2010

I recently got a 13.3 with 4 gigs of ram, and lemme preface this by saying that it is a phenomenal computer. I have an ipad, and using airdisplay to do wireless dual monitors is a sight to behold.

However, I've noticed a rather disturbing battery drain on my MBA. It came at about 86% charged, and after a full charge I've noticed fairly significant battery drain. I didn't time anything, but it hit ~50% battery after an evening of really sparse usage (brightness 50%, wifi on, no mp3s playing, click2flash installed and no flash content used).

I figured it was first day jitters and recharged it to full, then watched a single video on hulu with flash enabled and full screened at the same 50% brightness with 80% sound. After a 3 minute video, I was already down to 97%. Then I searched online for average battery life, finding out that it was capable of handling 11.2 hours of light browsing usage from anandtech. This took a max of an additional 10 minutes, which dropped the battery to 95% (no flash was on and hulu was closed). I shut the lid and opened it again this morning after 8 hours of standby and it was at 94%.

I don't feel very confident that this MBA can last half the day if I was using it non stop, let alone a full 11.2 hours. I want to know if this is a battery defect on my own laptop and warrants a replacement, or if this is the status quo.

In fact, in the time it took me to type this post on my desktop computer, my macbook air has dropped down another % to 93% with absolutely nothing running and no active use.

MacBook Pro :: Maximizing Battery Life On Late 2011?

May 17, 2012

I know - or think I recall - that there was a user's tips article on maximizing battery life. When I'm outdoors with my MBP, I always have Photoshop CS6, InDesign CS6, Illustrator CS6, Acrobat Pro X, Parallels Desktop, MS Word and maybe a few 'little' apps running. I need these to get my projects done. I can usually get about 3 1/2 hours out of my battery but if I could get 5, I'd be happy.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the most current (at least 2011) user tip on the topic?

MacBook :: Air Mid 2011 Hot CPU, Fan On High, Short Battery Life?

Jun 25, 2012

Background: Air i7 Mid 2011 4gb RAM, 256 SSD, purchased in Aug 2011. Battery life is normally 5.5hours with wifi on, blue tooth off. I charge the battery until status says charged then I unplug until I get the reserve power message at 9%, most days I charge 2 times, sometimes 3 times. When I plug in an external monitor using my thunderbolt to dvi or thunderbolt to hdmi my battery life drops to 2.5-3.5hours (extra work, less battery, makes sense), back left is hot and fan is running. When I have apache web server, mysql, php, netbeans, firefox with over 30 tabs, safari with over 10 tabs, thunderbird, avast antivirus, adium, skype and other random pgms loaded my battery life stayed over 4.5 hours, activity monitor at about 80% idle. The back left corner of the keyboard stays cool during this time.

I have read the CPU power and cores are adjusted automatically based on usage, and this is what I have found to be true with great consistancy. About 1-2 months ago my battery life dropped to  about 2.5 hours. I have been trying to figure the cause. At the same time my back left corner of the keyboard is getting hot like I have the external monitor plugged in. The fan is running all the time. I look at the activity monitor and it shows 80%-90% idle. I have been on the phone with support and we tried the SMC reset, but the fan is just doing it's job of cooling the cpu. Apple phone support seemed to feel this was normal, even though I told them the back left of the keyboard was not normally this way.  I have narrowed it down to.... the cpu is being told to run harder than before, so where is the mixedup signal? I began this morning reading all the messages here in the disscussions this am (and there are many with the same description), many references to activity monitor.

[URL]- the activity monitor in this will show the process that is using the cpu the most. In my case I had installed HP scanner software 2 months ago, which is badly written and very misbehaved, see the following link. This process would go to 100% cpu every few seconds (not all the time, so I could not see it in the summary, ), shown when I sorted by cpu % usage.

[URL]I have removed my scanner drivers. My battery life is back to 5.5hr, back left of keyboard is cool to touch, and the fan is off. My findings, when the back left of the keyboard is hot, the CPU is running hard. External monitors heat up the cpu. Activity monitor can tell you what is using the cpu, by sorting by %cpu usage (don't trust the summary, look at the individual processes, as shown in the link TS1473) and watching for 10-30 seconds, a misbehaved app may not be at the top all the time.

MacBook :: Poor Wi-Fi Performance When Using Battery?

Aug 15, 2009

I have a MacBook (late 2007) and I've noticed that my internet crawls when I'm using the laptops battery power. I can be downloading a file at 200 kB/s under A/C power, and as soon as it goes on to the battery it'll drop to 10 kB/s. I'm assuming some kind of power saving is being activated, but this has only happened recently. Around the same time this started happening, I updated my computer to 10.5.8 and I also turned in my computer to the Apple store to have the palm rests replaced for having cracked under the weight of the lcd. Would this problem be caused by either the update or the repair, and if not, what could be causing it?

MacBook Pro :: Late 2008 15 Battery Life - Watching Movie From Hard Disk Use Less Battery Than DVD?

Nov 11, 2009

i just ordered a late 2008 macbook pro 15 with the dual GPUs (9400m and 9600m GT) and I'm a little worried about the battery life.

-What can I expect if just doing normal every day stuff (web surfing mostly?)

-does watching a movie off of the hard disk use less battery than watching it off a DVD? Is there a big difference?

I'm not a big gamer but would like to have the horsepower to play a game should one come out that I want. I'm also not a big traveler so battery times are only of average importance.

Basically, I'm asking if I made a good purchase considering I have only average concerns for both battery and game performance. They had the new 7 hour battery 15" macbook pro for the same price but it doesn't have the dual GPUs.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Life Slightly Shorter After Calibrating Battery

May 4, 2012

I calibrated my MacBook Pro battery and then noticed that the battery life seemed slightly shorter after that. I calibrated it according to this: [URL]

Just wondering if I have done anything wrong...

One more question... What do they mean by "At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep." Does it mean that I have to use the computer until it just shuts down or should I shut it down once the "Low Battery" warning pops up?

MacBook :: Good Battery & Terrible Battery Life?

Jul 16, 2009

I have a 13" 2.4 GHZ white macbook that I bought in march of 2008. About 4 months ago I all of the sudden started having problems with battery life. It was very abrupt. I used to be able to take my macbook and sit through 3 classes or more with no trouble in regards to batter life. Then suddenly the battery would drain within a few hours. It has remained that way since.

I've spent the last month or so looking around forums and other places to try and find someone with a similar problem and possible solutions. As a result I've discovered that my situation seams to be somewhat unique.

Using cocoanut battery I tested my battery's capacity and it remains at a solid 98%. How can my battery still be at 98% capacity and have such a short battery life? I also seam to be losing charge while my macbook is closed. How and why does that happen? If I leave my macbook closed for a day or two it can lose up to 25% charge just sitting there!

I've tried loads of things including turning off unnecessary things such as sharing and bluetooth and calibrating my battery, all with no avail.

What is going on?? My battery is too old to be eligable for a recal and I'm not paying $30 just to have a phone conversation with a "Genius". If anyone has any idea what's going on and any possible advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Getting Hot / Battery Life Reducing

Aug 10, 2009

I've had this MBP for just over 8 months now, I'd intially purchased one in november, but the audio out used to give a crackle sound so they replaced the laptop. Moving on to the point - in the last week or so, I've noticed the MBP suddenly seems to get very hot and the fans turn on and thus suddenly becomes very noisy. I was using it on the bed so could appreciate that I may have been blocking the vents, but I've had it on a stand the past couple of days and it still seems to do it for no particular reason. The charger usually always gets ridiculously hot, but the MBP used to stay relatively cool, now the MBP gets hot independently of whether its being charged or not. Moreover, my battery life has gone from what used to last 4 hours, to around 2.25.

Cocunut battery gave the following stats:
Current Battery capacity: 4483mAh
Load Cycles: 222
Age: 8 months

MacBook Air :: Rev B Vs Rev C Battery Life

Sep 5, 2010

I am interested in getting a refurbished Macbook Air. I was looking at the following two models:

Macbook Air Rev B., 1.86 GHz, 2GB RAM, 128 GB SSD for $1349 OR
Macbook Air Rev C., 2.13 GHz, 2GB RAM, 128 GB SSD for $1549

Other than the processor difference of 0.27 GHz, and based on reading the technical specs of each system, I don't see any difference between the two machines. The one piece of information that I couldn't find was the advertised battery life for the Rev. B unit. The Rev. C unit is supposedly rated for 5 hours of wireless productivity. Is the same battery used in the Rev B also or is the battery of lower WHr?

My needs are pretty simple - I would like to get the Air as a small and portable, easy to carry machine for rounds and writing up patient notes, consult notes, etc. It will not be my primary machine, but hopefully a worthy road-warrior. I will be using Windows for the clinical electronic medical record application, but other than that, all other use will be on Mac OS X. Based on this, would you recommend going with the Rev B or Rev C. Money is tight, and this will be a gift from one of my mentors, but I do want to get the biggest bang for the buck. If the only difference between the two machines is processor speed, I can't justify spending 200$ extra just for a 0.27 GHz gain.
