Windows On Mac :: Finding Mobile 7 Development

Aug 12, 2010

i was wondering if anybody here was developing for Windows Mobile 7 on their Mac? It may seem strange but I'm a Windows Mobile 7 developer and I really, really like it.

I know it goes against the grain here but I am a huge fan of Visual Studio. I really enjoy CSharp, C++, and VB.net. Though I'm partial to CSharp.

Anyway I joined the beta SDK program (its free) and I really enjoy programming for Windows Mobile 7. I noticed many other developers are using Mac as well. In fact, one of the presentations you can view shows Microsoft employees using a MBP.

I'm flipping between VMWare and Bootcamp because the XNA code requires a DX10 card which VMWare doesn't use. Though VMWare is great for Silverlight stuff.

MacBook Pro :: System Development And Graphics Design

Oct 1, 2009

I just got my first Apple product, a 13.3" MacBook Pro, and have been loving every minute of it. I'm using it mainly for work (systems development and graphics design).

1) Salesperson from Apple shop strongly advised against keyboard protectors citing it causes overheating; he recommended regular vacuuming and blowing with compressed air instead. Is this true?
2) Will I see a noticeable performance increase with a 7200rpm HDD? Will a larger capacity and faster spinning speed of 7200rpm degrade battery life? How about heat issues?
3) I'm thinking of getting a matte screen protector to reduce glare and reflection. Will the matte screen degrade image quality and brightness. I seen several sellers (from HongKong) selling cheap ones at US$6 to US$9 with shipping on eBay, are they safe to use?

Here is one such example [URL]

ITunes :: Can't View Some Videos From IOS Development Resources

Jun 27, 2012

(ex: Working with Core Data, Implementing Push Notification). Certain videos appear to download but when I try to play them, the download starts again. I have "downloaded" the same video 5 or 6 times, and it still won't play.

Other iTunes video downloads from iOS Development Resources work without any problems (ex: Ingredients of Great Apps).

Specifically: if I am in iTunes, and navigate to iTunes U, then select the iOS Development Videos category, I see a list of all the videos that are available. If I click the little "Get" button for many of the videos in the list, the download process seems to work perfectly (I see the progress of the download in the header section, and it all looks normal). However, as soon as the download is complete, the "Get" button reappears and the video listing looks just like all the other videos that have not yet been downloaded. If I attempt to play the video (select it, and click the Play button) the download starts all over again. I have found one video that actually downloaded, and can be played.

Is there a setting that controls this behavior? I haven't been able to find it.

Will games, business software, leasure software etc. slowly start to be made with multiple cores in mind? Or is the trend that multiple core usage is mostly for professional editing?

I know Xcode scales linearly depending on the number of cores but I am trying to look for a sweet spot in performance and budget. I want something I can grow with for a few years (i.e 3-4).

OS X :: Navigating To Different Windows Of Same Application

Sep 18, 2008

Please educate me if there is an elegant way of accomplishing this simple and common task from a long-time Windows user. Let's say I have Thunderbird or Mail open, and I start writing a new message on a new message window. Then momentarily I click behind it to the inbox to check something; say, to find another address I need. Now, the New Message window has become buried under the Inbox window, and since it's smaller than the Inbox, I can't click on it to bring it back forward (unless, of course, some edge of it is sticking out from under the inbox). If I was on windows, I'd just click on the New Message window's tile. The dock doesn't distinguish between different windows of the same program.

Using Expose is cool, except it takes me several keystrokes or a keystroke plus the mouse to find what I'm looking for (plus F9 isn't as easy to reach as ALT-Tab, IMO), especially if I've got a lot of windows open. I like in Windows being able to visually scan all of the windows that exist without having to move the mouse, and then only need one mouse click to get to that window. Perhaps there's a way to flip through the different windows in your current app? That would make things simpler and more elegant, but I certainly don't know how to do that. I'd love to hear your tips to make this transition go smoother! Alright, F10 does that, I just remembered! Also regarding Expose, if I've got several textedit windows open and they're all zoomed out (but with different file names), there's no way for me to identify them without first hovering over them to see their file names.

OS X :: Not Automatically Move All Windows Of Application?

Feb 17, 2009

When I enter spaces and move a window or dialogue of an application to a new space, it does not automatically move ALL windows of that app. This is frustrating and I end up having to move five or six windows to get the whole app into the new space. This is not the case with all apps, but it seems like spaces has problems with professional apps like Flash, Pro Toots, Photoshop -- it never moves all the little related dialogues and panels. Anyway to fix this other than to close the app and open it fresh in the new space?

Applications :: Application For Editing Photos Like On Windows?

Mar 20, 2009

Close to pushing the 'buy now' button on an IMac after using Windows for a looong time, wondering what software I should be looking at to manipulate photos. From what I read iPhoto (Or Picasa for Mac?) will let me organise stuff perfectly fine but is a little basic for editing, Photoshop is WAY too expensive.

Which leaves what other options? I have PaintshopPro (old version, 7) on Windows, AFAICS its not available on Mac, Irfanview(free) which is excellent for basics like resizing (I presume iPhoto handles this?), and DCEnhance which is also free and does some automagic type changes to bring more detail out of shadows or put it back into highlights - any equivalents, either for free or pay?

Looks like Aperture might do the business, is that the 'tool of choice' for people who dont want to pay or have the large learning curve for Photoshop?

OS X :: How Do I Move Application Windows Between Spaces From The Keyboard

Mar 20, 2009

1) How do I move application windows between spaces from the keyboard? I know I can drag the window to the edge of the window and it'll go to the next space, but I don't like to use the mouse unless it's absolutely required.

2) When I restore a window into the current space, it automatically goes to the space the window originated from. How do I disable this? When I bring a window up from the dock, I want it to open in the space I am currently in.

3) When I open a new application window, it goes to the space where the last application window was located. This is annoying. How do I disable this? I want it to open in the current space, even if I was in another space the last time I had an application open in another space.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Multiple Application Windows Cannot Be Displayed At Once

May 24, 2012

Since installing Lion (currently 10.7.4) on my home iMac, I've been unable to have windows for more than one application appear at one time. For the most part, applications run just fine. But say I have Adobe Illustrator open and want to drag an image from a folder in Finder into my document. The second I select Finder from the Dock, Illustrator disappears. Click back on Illustrator from the dock, and it reappears, but now my Finder window has gone AWOL. Seems like it's all still there, just becomes invisible.

At no time will it display more than one application. Two windows of the same application? But any time I switch between apps, it shows only the most recently selected app, regardless of what's actually running on my machine. Makes dragging and dropping from one app to another near impossible. Quitting and restarting does nothing. Even a fresh install of Lion did nothing. I find it hard to imagine this could be a hardware issue though.

My iMac works perfectly otherwise. As for my current settings, I have no desktops/spaces setup (aside from the one), and have turned off all associated features for Mission Control in the System Preferences - more out of an attempt to simplify in the hopes that it would work than out of any dislike for the features. The iMac itself is a 20-inch, early 2008 with 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo and 4 GB SDRAM.
