Hardware :: Setup Wireless Network In Room With Airport Express
Aug 17, 2009
im off to college in 2 weeks and would like to set up a wireless network in my residence room with my airport express. Its a small room, but i would still like to be able to move from my desk to bed or whatever without wires, and also i would like to be able to hide my printer somewhere. Heres the catch. My residence doesn't allow wireless networks for some reason. I know i can make my network hidden. But will that be enough to keep them from finding out? I imagine every now and then they might just scan for networks to see whats out there. But if mines hidden, i shouldnt have a problem, correct? Just want to make sure. Not sure what the consequences are, but im sure they would just ask to shut it down.

I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.

I've encountered the situation a few times while traveling where you have cable connection but no WiFi. Since I now travel only with iPhone and iPad (no laptop), can I just connect an old AirPort Express A1084 to the router and expect WiFi? If so does the now unused AirPort Express kept the configuration of my home network e.g. name and password?

Question: Can a wireless printer 'join' an Airport Express Network? The printer in question is not near my router, can the printer join the network wirelessly so that I can print w/o a USB connection?

We already have an imac that is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable using the broadband provider Virgin Media. Can I create a wireless network with airport express and my broadband or do I need some sort of upgrade or additional hardware?

I have an airport extreme base station (wireless n draft). problem is, my room is all the way in the back and i get poor reception. Can i just buy another standard $40 wireless G router and "extend" my wireless network? if so, how easy would this be to accomplish? would it be as simple as hooking up the $40 router with my airport extreme using via ethernet cable so that it extends it? update: I am looking at this router...would this accomplish my purpose? I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

I have a Intel iMAC 2.4GHz. I know it has build in Airport Extreme. I also have a Airport Express 802.11n. I am having some difficulty making it do what I want. I am wondering if it is even possible.
This is my setup:
DSL modem -> iMAC in office connected via ethernet.
Airport Express -> Airtunes, USB printer, Dish Network DVR connected to Ethernet in living room.
My question is can I share my DSL connection from my iMAC to the Airport Express then to my DVR (wired) and even my Wii (wireless)?

I have a WiFi network setup with two Airport Expresses. One is "n" and one is "b/g". After a day or so I notice that the wifi speed degrades significantly. I'm not sure what settings to play around with. Could it be the channel? In general, is there a better channel to select?

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.
1 MacBook Pro
1 Airport Extreme
1 Airport Express to Extend the Network
The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?

So my Macbook is coming in the mail and I'd like to plan my wireless setup. I don't even have the AirPort yet but I like to think ahead. So I'll have my Macbook, a printer, my speaker system, and my Xbox 360 and I'd like to have them all working wirelessly. How would I go about setting this up? Can I use a router with the AirPort in case I need extra hard-wired ethernets (modem-router-AirPort)? Which parts are directly connected to the AirPort and which to the Macbook? Knowing where the wiring must go is crucial in the placement of furniture and equipment.

Play Itunes and no music playing in stereo.
1. Computer running Win XP Pro
network connection as shown below
Internet <->Router<->Dlink Switch<->Dlink Wireless Router (no Dhcp)<->Airport express hard wired to Wireless Router<->Plugged to Stereo
Can connect to either Dlink Wireless router or Airport Express.
Tried playing music while connected to airport = no music
Tried playing music while connected to Dlink = no music

I have been trying to set up an AirPort Express in client mode so I can have some remote speakers to listen too but I have been having problems. I have everything set up and I go into AirPort Utility and choose the Express (at this time I have selected the Express as my network). I am able to choose the option to join an existing network (my AirPort Extreme) and AirPort Utility then shows me my settings and everything looks okay, but when APU restarts the Express I get an error message that says that APU can not find the Express's network. I go to the Express and it is blinking amber (not a good sign). I have the Express' MAC added to the Access Control Pane in the AirPort Extreme's preferences. I have read Apple's support article and followed it to a T and yet I still get the error message.

I'm trying to connect an AE to my PC using XP with a D-Link DIR-655 WiFi router. I've used the airport utility and connected the AE to my router via ethernet. It appears to be setup properly and I can see it on the D-Link software. After disconnecting the ethernet cable and with the AE sitting next to the router it continually shows up and then disappears. The light is green on the AE. Then I disconnected the power and moved the AE into the place where I'm going to use it.
Now it will show up on my D-Link software occasionally but the light won't turn green. It also doesn't show up on the airport utility software. I also have a Touch and ATV that both work fine on the same network and the same location. The AE is about 30 feet from the router with only one wall in between them. Am I missing something here or could there be a problem with the AE?

I got fiber optic internet installed, and setup a pppoe wired connection using the username and password given to my by my ISP, and it works beautifully. But I can't get the wireless for it setup. When I go to Airport utility (my router is a Time Capsule), I tell it to set up a new connection, give it a name and password, tell it to connect using pppoe and enter in the same username and password as given by my ISP for that, and finish and everything seems to go ok, and it shows that i connect to the network, but pages wont load...

Back when I did this last time I found some detailed instructions, but of course I didn't bookmark them. I now changed the channel and now I lost the connection to the second one, which is only used for music.
I have a WPA/WPA2 password and an restricted access list.
We're on Leopard.

I picked up a Time Capsule 500GB and an AirPort Express 802.11n today. I am trying to setup my network as follows.
Time Capsule as base station
AirPort Express as as range extender
I would also like to set up the AirPort Express to use it's ethernet port to provide internet for my DirecTV HR20 HD DVR. I've currently got everything connected and running, and the HR20 gets an IP address, however, it says that there is no internet connection.

I just got a 17" Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz. My friend that sold it to me said that her wireless always had a really weak signal but in recent time, unless she was in the same room as the router it was really hard to get a decent connection. She said she took it to an Apple store but her Apple care was expired and they said they'd have to send it out for 5-7 days. Today I just tried it out at home, where I normally (as well as everyone else in the house) have full signal from our router, this computer gets a bar or two max.
I was adding in some more RAM to it so I figured I'd take it the rest of the way apart. So, in doing so carefully because I could not find a diagram at all that matched this computer, I found that there is not a Airport Extreme card in the computer at all. Is that right? Is the wireless built in now? (or maybe for that year). Is this a common problem that the signal fades?

I have a few questions about using a airport express as a wireless bridge to my tv room.
1. I want to use my airport express as a wireless bridge with my att 2wire router. Would there be any issues or would that work
2. I need to have 3 Ethernet ports but the airport has one would i be able to hook up the airport express to a switch to get the extra 2 ports.
3. Would I be able to do the wireless bridge and stream music at the same time.
The att 2wire is the modem the airport would be the bridge in the tv room and would be hooked up to a xbox 360, Slingbox Pro HD, and a directv HD DVR.

I currently have a cannon MP620 all in one printer, I mainly use this for my PC notebook. If I were to purchase an Airport Express how would I go about printing wirelessly? Would I need to instal any drivers from the printer since it would be a network printer? I'm pretty confused as to how wireless printing works with the Airport Express.

I am thinking about buying an airport express to extend the wireless coverage in my house.
I have a wireless router, however the signal does not quite reach the other side of the house. At the moment I use some network over mains equipment, like [URL], to connect a desktop up at the other side of the house.
I was wondering if I will be able to connect an airport express up to one of these power line adapters and use it in conjunction with the other wireless.

New here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.
My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).
I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.
Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?
