ITunes Mac :: Library File Cannot Be Saved A Duplicate File Name Was Specified

I keep my music and my library file on an external drive. I've been having this error whenever I try to download the updates for my iphone apps, and then after it's popped up once, it continues. After I quit the app, when I try to restart iTunes it won't open because of an unknown error 13014. If I trash the itunes genius and extras files, I can get iTunes to open again, but then I'm back to the library file cannot be saved problem.

ITunes Mac :: Library File Cannot Be Saved Error -50
This morning I'm continually getting this error message popping up on my iTunes.

Last night I had to restart my Mac as everything had frozen, and it was the same scenario this morning when I returned to it.

After restarting and playing some tunes the error message started to appear, and switching between playlists etc. was very slow with the beach ball spinning a lot.

I've a large iTunes collection (95,000+ tracks) stored on an external firewire drive.

I've read elsewhere this morning someone having a problem, and reinstalling Snow Leopard was suggested and after many hours it seemed to work.

Has anybody else come across this error, and had other solutions to the problem?

ITunes Mac :: Library Cannot Be Saved - The Required File Cannot Be Found.
I want to update my iPad to the new iOS but am running into a problem. Here is my sequence of events after plugging it in and letting it take over:

itunes first message to appear:

[URL]

I click 'download and install'

2nd message:

[URL]

I click 'cancel'

[URL]

I click 'OK' and then the message just keeps popping up.

If I click on 'Music', I can see all my stuff. iTunes is recognizing everything.

Here's what my iTunes folder looks like:

[URL]

It's on an external drive that's always connected 24/7/365

Any ideas here?

Snow Leopard :: ITunes Library File Cannot Be Saved / What Does That Mean?
I received a message "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. There is not enough memory available."

I received it several time, once it also added:
(error -50)

What does that mean ? Not my Music Folder in iTunes, is it ?
I know it can handle 32.000 songs.

I have, it says at the bottom:
3716 songs, 240 days, 24.64 GB

When I received this message I was downloading a movie and thought it refers to that.
While it said "…cannot be saved" I saw the movie being downloaded apparently without problems, waited 2-3 minutes and indeed it was saved, so why the message ? (if it refers to the movie).
But it says "The iTunes library" file cannot be saved. So coincidence ? Nothing to do with movies ?

In any case, I want to know what it means and also how can I add more memory ?

ITunes :: ERROR: Duplicate File Name Specified
When starting up iTunes (version 10.6.1) I get an error message: Duplicate file name was specified. Needless to say, no clue as to what file name it is referring to. Furthermore, there are 5 songs which I can not play, bought from the iTiunes store. Contacted the iTunes store - they "enabled" the download for those 5 songs. When I connect to the iTunes store, login and check for downloads etc. I get the error message: Unable to check for available downloads. Duplicate file name was specified.

ITunes :: Link Duplicate Tracks To The Same Source-file?
I have a number of tracks on both an artists album and again on a compilation album, not to mention greatest hits. (eg Today by Smashing Pumpkins on both Siamese Dream and again on Triple J Hottest 100, Vol. 2). I know it's a little OCD, but I like having the tracks available through both albums on iTunes (depending on my mood, I'll put the album on or go for a Triple J Mix). Even so, I'd like to decrease the 4.82GB worth of duplicates somewhat. If there is a way to do this automatically, that would be great, but I doubt it. There is also, of course, the risk of deleting album releases in favour of Live recordings or vice versa to consider in this.

ITunes Mac :: Library File Keeps Getting Corrupted?
iTunes 10.1

I recently moved my iTunes library from a Time Capsule (500GB) to a USB external HD (1.5TB). I followed the procedures listed in numerous places on how to properly do this. I also copied the "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Library.xml" files from the Time Capsule to the new drive. Everything got copied and setup properly.

Now, I'm running into a problem where the iTunes Library file keeps getting corrupted. When this happens, I open iTunes and a small message box appears with a message that says something like "Importing iTunes Library" (sorry I don't have the exact language). However, when it finishes, it creates a files called "iTunes Library (Damaged)". When iTunes opens and all of my music is listed properly, but none of my podcasts are listed and none of the iOS apps are listed. I can navigate to the iTunes library location on the disc and see that they are still there but iTunes itself doesn't list them.

why the iTunes Library keeps getting corrupted and how to prevent it? Also, if I should let it create a new iTunes Library file, how can I get it to recognize my podcast subscriptions and iOS apps?

ITunes Mac :: Wrong File Locations In ITunes Music Library?
I have wrong file locations in my XML file, example:

<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Music/iTunes/Alex%20Smoke/Lux/1-07%20Lux+.mp3</string> <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Music/iTunes/Alex%20Smoke/Lux/14%20Harmonious.mp3</string>

These files are actually in the Volumes/Music/iTunes/Music/Alex%20Smoke/... folder. (the difference is another "Music" folder in the tree...)

Weird thing is that whenever I delete the XML file and restart iTunes to create it again, they are still there with the wrong location, but they play fine in iTunes! Even more, after I play them in iTunes, and restart it to create the XML file again, they are OK in the XML too.

My only problem is that there are 600+ of these mistakes in my XML, and I'd really love to have another solution to fix it, not having to locate and play them one by one..

ITunes Mac :: The ITunes Library.itl File Is Locked - How To Unlock
I have read many, many postings on this issue, but can't seem to find a resolution that works for me.

The problem occurs whenever iTunes is forced to close unexpectedly. Upon attempting to reopen iTunes, I get the following error message:

"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

However, when I browse to the library.itl file and select "get info", it does NOT show as locked. In fact, if I attempt to check the "lock" selection, it immediately unchecks itself. Also on the "get info" page, the Sharing & Permissions area says "You can read and write".

I do not know of any other way to change permissions in OSX. I do not know how to use the terminal and view the chmod permissions on a networked drive.

However, since I do store my music library on a NAS device, I have browsed to the library.itl file via PC and viewed the properties. Again, it is not checked as "read only", and the permissions clearly allow read and write by everyone. I have even changed the permissions to "full control" for everyone. But that doesn't resolve the problem. As far as I can tell, there is not a permissions problem at all.

I have tried to copy the library.itl file to my mac desktop, in order to rename the original file and replace it with the copy, to try and reset the permissions that way. But OSX tells me "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access "iTunes Library.itl". So I cannot move the file. Interestingly, I CAN rename the file in the iTunes folder. But this does not help me. I find it funny that I can rename it, but I can't move it...

I am running OSX 10.6.5 with all the latest updates, and the latest version of iTunes as well. 10.1 I think? But I can't check because I can't get iTunes to open right now.

I have had this problem many times in the past. And I have gone as far as creating a whole new library, which takes FOREVER as I have nearly 120GB of music. And I lose all sorts of info... playlists, album art, etc. This is a real pain which I hope to avoid.

What gives me hope is that the last time this happened iTunes just spontaneously started working again. As if there were some sort of "timeout" issue. I have restarted multiple times of course, but still have not got a resolution this time. It would be nice if there were a simple "iTunes Library.itl.LOCK" file that I could delete.

Apple, would you institute a crash recovery protocol for this issue? In all my reading and research, it seems like people are just sort of guessing at what is causing this problem, and coming up with a variety of different fixes that they think might work, or that occasionally work in given situations. But there seems to be no official word from anyone at Apple as far as a direct response to these library file locks caused by crashes.

Additionally, I feel that this may fall along the same lines as the lack of Time Machine support for networked drives. There is something sub optimal about Apple's networking. I don't know what it is. But there seems to be very little support for Apple users who use networked storage. Just to put my iTunes library on a NAS took a whole lot of reading and understanding to get done right, with no official help from Apple to be found anywhere. Not all mac users are dummies who need the simplest and most limited configuration options in order to avoid "problems". Networked storage is the future of home media and data backup. Please pay more attention to those of us who are trying to pave the way here.

ITunes Mac :: Trashing Existing XML And Damaged Library File
I'm using OS X 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.1.1. When I started iTunes today, I went straight to copy some files into it from another folder. I got an error message about the .xml file and then told files were damaged (I think). I think iTunes started rebuilding the folders but I stopped it and ended up with only 30-something gb of tunes instead of almost 100 gb. All my music is still there in the iTunes/Music folder (I also have 30 back-up DVDs of the library), but I really, really want to be able to keep the Date Added information as this is how I view the music, as well as all the artwork I've manually added. The iTunes Library (Damaged) file is there, as are several Previous iTunes Libraries file.

After a web search, I did the following:
- Quit iTunes and copied the most recent "Previous iTunes Library" file to the desktop.
- I trashed the iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Library (with the logo) files at the top of the folder structure.
- I then dragged the copied Previous iTunes Library file into the iTunes/iTunes Music folder and launched iTunes. Should it be dragged into the top-level iTunes folder or where?

It opens, but with absolutely nothing in it. I've tried dragging the Previous iTunes Library file everywhere I can think of (trashing existing XML and Library file each time), but still no joy. This latest Previous iTunes Library file is only a couple of months old and I'd much, much rather re-do the last two months music than lose the Date Added and all Playlists etc.

ITunes Mac :: Consolidating Library - Required File Can't Found
I'm trying to move my library off of an external hard drive and back onto my MacBook Pro's internal drive. As I don't want to lose all of my metadata I'm using the consolidate library method to copy everything over from the external drive and update all of the library links for me automatically. Unfortunately thought I've stumbled upon a hitch. My library is roughly 27GB. Along the way I've had a few errors popping up and saying "Copying files failed. The required file cannot be found."

This hasn't been an issue up until now as I've just had a quick scan through my library, identified which tracks have got broken links by looking for the little exclamation marks by them and then updating the links accordingly. Unfortunately I've now got about three quarters of my library transferred successfully to my laptop but every time I try to go back to consolidating the library i keep getting the "copying files failed." message appearing. I've scanned through the library for any exclamation marks and can't find any; I've also run Doug's script for MIA files (of which there appear to be none); and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

ITunes Mac :: Copying HD File To Imac Library - Standard Def Version Does Not Copy
I have a new 27" Imac with with all software updates and have successfully transferred everything from my powerbook. All of my Movies and TV Shows, however, had resided on my external hard drive. I dragged all of these Movie and TV Show files from the external hard drive into the Itunes Movie and TV shows library view pane on my imac (and had the system preference setting box checked which says "copy files to Itunes media folder when adding to library".....). All files successfully copied into the imac/itunes media folder EXCEPT ALL Standard definition versions of files associated with purchased HD media which did not copy over.

The imac itunes library view pane lists the "HD-SD" file, while the itunes media folder now only contains the HD version of the file. The only way I see to add the standard version files from my external drive is to individually copy directly into the Imac Itunes Movie and TV show folders (and then drag these up into the Itunes view pane for adding to the list. I assume I will still need the standard def "files" for any synching with an iphone, unless an updated Itunes now had figured out how to keep only the HD version and if a standard version is needed for the iphone it knows how to compress for that device.? Please let me know if anyone can shed light on this so I know whether or not I need to individually copy all of these standard def. files into the itunes folders directly.
