IMac :: Internal Hard Drive Too Noisy?

Feb 8, 2009

A few days ago I replaced my internal hard drive because after 2 months from purchase it crashed. The service people replaced it with a ST3500630AS Q Media and all I can say is that it's noisy. It's really irritating because I used my mac to be completely quiet. Should I be worried and call the service to tell them what's going on or should I let it be?

Intel Mac :: Super-drive Unable To Eject Disk?

May 13, 2012

I have a iMac (iMac7,1) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz that is 5 years old.  The MATSHITADVD-R UJ-875 (DB09) Superdrive has been replaced once already.  It is malfucntioning again.  I was wondering if there were any troubleshooting steps I could take that I am unaware of before I replace the drive.

It seems to be a mechanical issue.  The drive attempts to eject a disk - it sound like the disk is ejecting, yet it cannot.  It keeps attempting to eject the disk over and over again.  It has happened with a number of different disks, often after some time the disk will eventually eject. This time this one seems to be stuck for good. [URL]

Hardware :: Unable To Assemble Super-drive And Enclosure / Holes Don't Match Up

Mar 23, 2009

I have just received a Firewire enclosure for a SuperDrive I bought months ago from the same company, Other World Computing. I was told that they would work together, but now that I'm assembling it, I find that the tiny holes on the drive (very near the edge of the drive, and only two on each side of the top, not the many more that the enclosure seems to indicate should be there. In addition, the holes in the drive and the ones in the enclosure don't match up. The enclosure also is very long for the drive, even allowing for room to attach the ribbon cable and other cables inside.

I have now spoken with three different people at OWC, and nobody knows why this is or how to work out the problem, except to offer me another, less desirable enclosure that they assure me will fit the drive. (I didn't mention that the drive is an older model and that they no longer carry it.) Well, I was assured that the one they have already sent me was just fine for my drive, so you can 't blame me for being a bit wary of the assurances for the other enclosure.

The drive fits very snugly in the enclosure and doesn't seem to shift around. If I replaced a metal piece around the front of the drive that I took off to make it fit more flush with the front of the enclosure, it would be an even tighter fit. It wouldn't look as nice, but it could be done.

My question is I whether I can dispense with putting in those screws, which are meant to secure the drive within the case and keep it from shifting around. (The screws meant to attach the back panel of the enclosure, the one with the internal cables, and the holes in the enclosure will fit together fine, because they are both part of the same thing.)

I would really love to move on with this and not try out anything elselet alone a less good driveif I can.I wonder what you think.I have only a short while before I must make a decision, and I'm leaving for a visit to part of my family in about two weeks. Any input is very welcome.

MacBook Pro :: Super Drive Unable To Read Discs / Makes Clicking Noise

Nov 8, 2010

I've been using this MBP since 2007, and, it's starting to fail me. I was using an external hdd on it since the internal one crashed, and, then the external one crashed. I just purchased a 250gig hdd which fits perfectly in my Macbook, but, now I have another issue that's been pressing me for some time that didn't bother me at all until now when I need to install Snow Leopard;

My Super Drive isn't reading discs at all, and, it's making this scary crackling noise. I uploaded a video on youtube of me putting 2 discs in it, 1 with content (World of Warcraft: The Frozen Throne) and the other without content (Just a blank CD).

Before I link the video, I'd like to note that I am apparently amazed by the laser seeing as how I point to it and make a note of it ._. URL

OS X Mavericks :: How To Use Super Drive On Late 2013 IMac

Aug 24, 2014

how to use the super-drive?

I received a new late 2013 iMac with 27" Monitor, track pad and super-drive.  My problem is with learning to use the super drive.

It shows on my monitor and I rename the disc (i.e. Backup 1).  I drag the files to the disc folder.  Then I eject the disc.  When I re-insert the disk it shows blank disk.  However the original renamed folder still shows on the monitor with the files and they can be moved to other folders.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), also have VMware Fusion 5.0

IMac :: Superdrive Noisy Sometimes - Loud Vibration

Sep 2, 2010

I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA32N Superdrive in my 2010 i7 iMac and I've had to reinstall the OS twice, because someone in the house kept messing with different files. Anyhow, the first time I installed it the superdrive was very loud, as it was the second time I installed it. It was like a loud vibration, as soon as I put the disc in. I have put other discs in and they are as quiet as can be. I've tested 9 or 10 discs and they all seem to be quiet. So I decided to put in the install disc one more time and it was quiet as well, no more vibration. Is there something wrong here or are these drives just noisy sometimes?

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Spins And Super Drive Make Noise - No Boot Up

Jan 7, 2010

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

Software :: Unable To Reset Master Password / Super Secure Lock On System

Nov 11, 2010

I recently purchased a used imac g4 from a friend but I cannot seem to get it started. I tried to log in with the master password but do not have the password or install disk for OSX. I asked my friend about it and he said the same thing, he lost the user and master password including install disk. I took the comp from his hands anyway, it's in new condition and he never really used it, just forgot about it I suppose. It also seems that on startup the mac searches for disks and servers, so it could of been a part of a network system???????

I would like to know if there is a way to get into the bios and reset the whole system without password prompts and all that. Which is the best way to do this?

I have the mac osx install disk from my ibook but I tried to boot the disk and it's not booting. I also have the install disk for os tiger and that's not booting either. There must be a super secure lock on the system.

Mac Mini :: It Only Recognizes 1 Super-drive?

Mar 13, 2012

I have a mac mini server so it doesn't have a built in drive. I've been using a macbook air superdrive and it works wonderfully. I've had the need to queue up multiple copies and disc reads though recently, so I bought a second superdrive. (Less having to change discs, more automation while I'm away). The problem is, the mini only reads one superdrive? Both superdrives work individually if they're the only one plugged in, in all usb ports. But if both are plugged in, the 2nd one is not recognized and appears to not even have power as it won't accept a disc. how to make the mini see both devices and treat them both as active cd/dvd drives?

MacBook Air :: Can Super Drive Work With Old One

May 26, 2012

I have an old black Macbook (about 6 years old, with all of the recent downloads, etc.). I am going to get a Mac Air Book and I wanted, before I bought the Mac Air Book, to try out the external Super Drive with my old MacBook (which is working fine for burning and reading CDS and DVDS) ... I plugged in the USB cable of my brand new Super Drive to my old MacBook but when I inserted the blank CD into the slot of the external Super Drive, the CD was not taken up by the SuperDrive. It went in perhaps 95 - 98% of the way but did not "take hold" the way I suspected it would.  I know that I don't need this Super Drive for my old MacBook but I wanted to see if it would work with it .. in anticipation for getting the Mac Air Book.  Does this mean that I have a defective Super Drive ? Or does it mean that it will only work with a MacAir Book ... or what ? I am sure there are some easy answers. Or should I force the CD harder into the Super Drive ?
