IMac :: Can't Share Folders On OS X 10.6.2
Jan 15, 2010
So the problem is.. I was using a MBP as my main computer and my husband had the imac 24". He ordered the imac 27" and gave me the imac 24" to use and the laptop is now in its bad where it belongs.
So we both ported over our stuff.. he ported the info from the 24" imac to the 27" and then did a clean swipe of it and I ported the laptop's stuff over to the 24" that was at the point cleaned and empty.
When I did that something weird happened with the users where, instead of making me (the user from the laptop) the main admin it added it under a default admin. I had to switch the priorities around (make me the admin and the default user a reg. user) and then delete the default user.

Will the "sharing" feature allow me to use Time Machine on my iMac OS 10.4.11 if I use my MacAir OS 10.7.3 as a base? (I know that Time Machine is not compatible with my iMac 10.4.11 by itself).

Scenario: (Using iMac (Mavericks))
I want to send a document via email and decide to use the right click> 'share' function. This gives me these options: Messages, Air Drop & Mail.Â
I want to send my document by mail, but don't want to use apple's Mail app. I want the 'share' function to allow me to open my chosen browser (firefox) at a designated URL (Hotmail).Â
Question:Â Is it possible to add an addtional option to the 'share' sub menu? For example 'Hotmail' (via a URL).Â

I recently convinced my Mom to buy a Mac. We got her a new 20" iMac and she loves it. I'm in the process of transferring over all of her files from her PC over a network share, but I'm having trouble viewing those shared files.
I am connecting to the PC through the smb:// protocol and I can see the share... but not the files in it. I've double checked the permissions and everything seems to be in order, but no avail. I even checked the firewall settings on both computers.
I myself have a desktop PC and a MBP setup. I have no problem accessing any shares on my PC from my MBP, and I've done nothing different with my Mom's setup.

There are Mac to Mac and Windows to Windows apps to do this (like when you go to the left of your screen the mouse appears on the other computer and you can use it as if you were using that computer). Is there a way to do this using my iMac as the host (running OSX) and the netbook as the client (running Windows XP). It needs to be compatible with the two screens my iMac has hooked up.

I have a G5 Imac and a G4 ibook. i want to use time machine, and have one external hard drive connect to both. I could get an external with more than one input (ie, usb and firewire)--does that work? Could i use a usb hub to connect the 2 computers to the HD, and set up different partitions?
And what of NAS? i do not want to set up a whole network (we already have one at my office, and i want this to be independent).

I have an iMac at home and macbook pro for school. I have a folder with all my notes on my macbook pro. Is there anyway I can sync that folder on my imac?
IE: When I update the document on my macbook, it'll automatically update that file on my imac, either by syncing the computer or just joining the network. And when I update it on my imac, it'll update the one on my macbook as well? I've done some searching and is Chronosync or .Mac my only solution?

I have a late 06 early 07 intel imac. My problem is I recently purchased a 1 tb Seagate external hd and the imac recognizes some folders and their contents, like pictures and a couple others but will not recognize the contents of my movies or music folders. Now I copied all of my files from a wd elements 500gig and that worked perfectly with my imac. just can't get to my music or movies. Now, I can plug the seagate back into a windows pc and it works perfectly, so i know my files are there, but love to use my mac exclusively. Also running 10.4.11

I am having a problem with keeping all of my folders arranged by Kind. I have gone into the tasks toolbar in finder. From there I go to Show View Options, then I click choose Arrange by Kind, and then click use as defaults. This does not work, because when I go into a different folder or if I create a folder inside a different folder (that I made), the folder is not arranged by Kind. I have also tried using alt and going to the task toolbar to Keep Arranged By. However both options are only arranging the folder that I am in. I want every folder to be arranged this way.

Four years ago I bought the iMac I am using right now, I was a PC user (actually used Macs in the 90s) and I never knew if I was doing things properly. Since I am buying a new iMAc next week I need to know how to organize folders.
In my current iMac I have all my applications in the applications folder, I think that is ok. But for example, for my Photoshop and Flash projects I have made a folder in the Macintosh HD with my name and inside that folder I have many other folders. How should I organize my work? Should I put them in the documents folder or what?

What is Best setup for iMac with SSD and HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders?
Computer: iMac 2.93 GHz Quad core i7, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD
There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I've looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
1.I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
2.Would you do it differently or not at all about moving the home folder? I saw some posts about moving the entire home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected folders withing the home folder to take advantage of speed of SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document, music, iphoto, download, etc.) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website (**is this the same as creating an alias?):
cd
sudo cp -r Documents /Volumes/Master
sudo rm -rf Documents
sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
3.I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
4.My main question and here is where I'm not sure what's best?
I want to speed up photoshop as much as possible? Should I make a partition on the internal HDD for a scartch disk? If so, how big? Is there a benefit to partitioning for scratch disc use? Should I not partition HDD and use for data and scratch? Any other way? I wish apple had a how to maximize use of the imac with HDD and SSD page!

But I have another problem with a large important file that has gone missing. About a fortnight ago I went to open a personal file of which I call Favorites, I could not find it, I looked in my backup, Time Machine and it had disappeared there as well. Then a funny thing happened while I was trying to save a file, the lost file appeared in the file selection box. I clicked on it and it opened all the to the folders inside, but of course I could not open the folders in the save file. I then went looking again for the file but to no avail. how I might get this file back, it must be dodgeing around somewhere.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), Imac

You have copy a file and have to paste it to multiple folders. I hope I do not have to paste it folder after folder.
I tried to highlight all the folders but there is no paste option in the menu. Is there an easy way to paste it?

10.8 and 10.9 become a headache copying/moving files/folders between disks. After download selected images to my Imac from cards I used to move all of them to a local network backup disk (attached to a linux OS)
I don't do this anymore from a year ago: annoying warnings like "the file ... is in use" (not in use, even had been downloaded) stopped move; repeated procedure with the rest of the files included the 'used' one, over and over again and finally, after 12 times or so all files had moved. 100 files to move, stop, 80 files to move, stop, 60 files.......Â
Same problem moving files between disks attached to the same iMac.'You have to provide an admin password...." -> Continue  Password set and again 'File ... is in use' (not in use, it is just backup file)Reseting the Mac. Worse
.'You have to provide an admin password...."Â No 'Continue' option, just only 'Ok' that will do.... nothing. My solution: Terminal: sudo mv source targetÂ
I guess Finder has been tought to make life easier, isn't it?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
