OS X Leopard :: External HDD Doesn't Mount, To Mount
This is my second external Hardrive from WD. The first one broke, had to send it back. Then they gave me the one I currently I have and IT broke. It does not mount. I used Disk Warrior to get some of my important files. My question is, if I re-partition the drive, will it mount again? Or if I erase everything on it? I don't have the money and go out and buy another one.

Just some notes: When I connect it to my Mac, the icon in the disk utility is grayed out. I tried repairing, verifying, but it won't work. It also did not work on a PC. I was very surprised that I was able to retrieve files using Disk Warrior.

OS X :: Portable Hdd Will Not Mount?
So, i'll try to be as detailed as possible. I have been using a Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB portable hard drive (reformatted to HFS+) with my 13" Macbook Pro for a while now. I use my computer to rip my DVDs and put them on the hard drive to play on my Xbox 360. Things were working great until it stopped mounting on my Macbook (or any other computer running OS X). The strange part is that it is still recognized in disk utility, but when i try to "mount" it it says something to the effect of "an error has occurred, try repairing the disk". However, when i attempt to repair the disk it says that it is fine. Also, i have tried to use an external power source so power is not the issue.

OS X :: How To Mount External Hdd Without Logging In
I'm running an iMac with Mac OS X 10.6.4 . It is used mainly as a database server. The database lives on an external hard drive. The problem is that Mac OS X does not mount the external drive until I log in locally. Logging in via SSH is not enough. Does anyone know how I can make OS X mount the external hard drive even if no one logs in?

OS X :: Hdd Cannot Mount - Getting Spinning Circles
i was watching a video in full screen and as it was over nothing happened - usualy it would end full screen and return to my apps, but I just got the spinning beach ball. After a minute of beach ball I got worried, so I tried cmd + tab to switch to another app, but nothing happend. I left it alone for 5 minutes or so, but still just black screen and beach ball...

So I held down the power button and waited for the laptop to power off, waited a short while and hit the power button; got the chime, got the apple, got the loading spinning circle, ..., ..., ..., ..., black screen and then the chime again and now this black rectangle telling me I needed to power off the computer and start it again. So I did - chime, black box of text; and so on 3 times.

OS X Leopard :: Time Machine Fails After HDD Replacement
My 250GB boot drive was getting full so I replaced it with a 500GB drive. I mirrored the 250 GB drive using SuperDuper before installing the 500GB drive in my G5. My TM drive is 500GB and has >140GB of free space. TM worked fine after the drive swap but after turning off backups for a couple of days, it now apparently wants to do a full 223GB backup rather than an incremental one. Is there any way to tell TM to only do an incremental backup?

The total space used by my boot and data HDDs is about 360GB, clearly less than the 500GB (465 actually) TM drive and before the drive replacement, there was almost 140GB of free space. Is there any way to tell TM not to do a full backup but rather only do an incremental one? I don't want to lose 5 months of backups on TM by erasing and starting over. The error reads: "... The backup requires 223.4GB but only 143.5GB are available".

PowerPC :: Internal HDD Doesn't Mount?
I have a Dual 1.8 G5. I've been experiencing shutdowns at start up but came to the conclusion that it was the primary hard drive failing somehow. So I installed 10.4 on a secondary hard drive and use that as my main and it works.

So this hard drive that failed is readable when I boot from CD and run disk utility. But if I boot in 10.4 the disk doesn't mount but it shows up in disk utility as unmounted. Also shows up in system profiler.

Is there a way I can get this drive to mount so I can make backups of stuff on there? Right now I'm transferring files using Terminal when I boot from CD - it would be easier if i can use a GUI interface to do this.

IMac Intel :: HDD Fails Again After Restoring Data From Time Machine?
I will try to explain my case and end with a question that maybe someone will be able to answer (I hope..):

1. My imac started to run very slow and every 2 minutes or less appeared the coloured wheel for some secs. While the wheel was visible, the Os and all the apps running freezed.

2. Firstly I thought it was a software problem, but after some "testing" I started thinking on a hard drive failure or similar.

3. I did a disk verification whith the Disk Utility and it failed.

Xserve :: Time Machine Ejecting Internal HDD During Backup
We have an XSERVE running 10.6.4 server. It has 2 internal 1TB drives. The plan is to use one as the main drive and the second as a Time Machine backup. This used to work in 10.5, but since about 10.6.2 or so, it has not worked correctly.

Time machine will come on, begin the backup, and then error off with a message that the drive has been ejected. I have erased the drive, but still no joy. I have partitioned the drive, still no joy. I have verified the drive repeatedly, and all is fine. I can copy files to and from the drive until the cows come home, and all works fine, which means I do not think it is the drive itself. Activate TM, however, and it will fail before the first backup is completed. The only way to get the drive back is to do a complete power down and then power up.

IMac :: Does Not Recognize External HDD
I got my new imac running leopard few months ago. I was using my WD 500GB external HDD as my backup disk for time machine etc and was working great till a few days ago. Now,when I connect(with firewire 800)- it does seem to start up but does not appear on the desk top. This happens with the USB connection as well.I first noticed the problem when time machine icon(clock) just kept rotating as if backing up,but it just kept going. this happened several times,so I restarted the imac,plugged/unplugged the WD without any joy. Now it does not even recognise it or appear on the desktop. I have checked all connections etc and all seem ok. I connected the WD to my ibook running 'panther-10.3' and it recognises it(via usb),so I presume the WD is working. The imac recognises another external HDD and appears on the desktop. Not sure what to do next, not really keen on trying a complete new reinstall just yet,and that may not even solve my problem. Otherwise the imac seems to be working all right without the WD connected to it.

Hardware :: External HDD Refusing To Mount - Volume Needs Repair
Last night I encountered a problem with my seagate FreeAgent external HD/D. I right-clicked on the desktop icon to eject it as per usual and once the icon had vanished I pulled out the USB cable. However, I then got a message saying that I didn't eject the device properly and might have lost data, etc. When I plugged the external drive in this morning I found that it wouldn't mount. I am in a state of panic at the moment because it is almost 150gb of data that I really did not want to lose! I read in one of the previous threads that this is a common problem amongst macs but I wasn't able to discern if this was a permanent error and if it means my drive is shafted. I ran disk utility and this is what it came up with:

Verifying volume "disk1s1"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

I tried to repair it using disk utility but it wasn't able to do it. I am now using the demo of Data Rescue II to do a thorough scan which will take several hours but I'm wondering what options I have. Are there any other mac tools I can use? I am a total newbie when it comes to macs having only made the transition from PC to Mac several months ago and I don't know what tools I can utilize to fix this problem, if it even can be fixed.

I can boot off a External HD holding down ALT. And i already tried clearing the P-ram many times.

Also when i go to load a 10.3 OSX disk it loads and either gives me a red circle X or like sorta artfacts and shifts the apple screen to the side of the page. Ive spent hours trying to fix this and have no luck. do i need a 10.4 or 10.5 disk? i did add 256MB ram to it so heres the specs. I have no clue what to do. Hardware :: Using Ext HDD Format - Unable To Recognize
I have a WD Passport 100Gb, USB, external hard drive that was being used on a windows pc as a back-up drive. I have since, successfully formatted it for use as a back-up drive on the Mac via Disk Utility and have been using it with Time Machine without any problems. It has proved to be a little small as a backup and has been replaced by another larger ext drive which is working fine. I now want to re - reformat the smaller WD disk back to be recognised on my Windows machine so that I can use it like a large memory stick and move Windows files (not Mac files) back and forth to work from home. I don't need to use it on the Mac again.

I have been singularly unsuccessful in getting the Windows machine to load the drive and recognise it. I feel sure that I have successfully converting the drive back to MS-DOS Fat32 format from Mac by using Disk Utility, but the Windows XP Home machine just refuses to recognise the drive even after repeated attempts to set it up as a Fat32 drive with one partition, set with a Master Boot Record 'scheme'. When I plug it into the Windows machine, it ticks like a clock and is recognised in Device Manager as a drive, (but not Explorer) and appears with an Error triangle, and in the 'properties' of that the drive is noted as "cannot start".

MacBook Pro :: It Won't Recognize New HDD
I'm having a problem with my MBP and am stumped; I hope someone has a solution.  Here's the backstory (please bear with me; this may be a bit long in order to give you all the details). My keyboard croaked, and the 160gb hard drive was filling up, so I thought I would replace both and add more RAM while I had the beast opened up.  So I did all that, successfully (I think).  Prior to taking out the HD, I backed it up using Time Machine.  The MBP was running Leopard.  I have the original 10.4.8 disc, after which I updated to 10.5.8.

After swapping out the keyboard, drive and adding RAM, I fired the system up and it worked!  So I inserted the Install disc, went to Disc Utilities and formatted and partitioned the 750gb new drive.  When I asked the system to install the OS, it chuckled at me and did nothing.  The new partitions are on the desktop, but the Install disc doesn't recognize them.  I plugged my external drive in (the one that has the Time Machine backup...), restarted the MBP, and it booted from the Western Digital external drive. how can I get the system to recognize the new drive and install the OS on it?

Now, however, one of my internal hard drives (not the primary one) won't mount. Various programs can't even tell it's there. I'm completely lost as to how to solve this problem. My first thought was to try to swap it into an external case to see if it would mount that way.

I have an rev. A iMac G5 that was purchased in January of 2005. The applecare has long expired. However, in May of 2008 due to factory defect Apple replaced the logic board, power supply and super drive [URL]. In December 2008 after experiencing problems with my hard drive I took my computer to the apple store. There they said it was dying and it would be cheaper to replace it myself. After purchasing a seagate hdd [URL] my computer won't recognize it. It stays at the black screen while the power light glows. After a few minutes the fans kick in at full force. I tested the hdd in another iMac G5 rev. B and it works fine. Any ideas on what the problem is or how to resolve it?
