Windows On Mac :: Transferring Parallels And XP From Mirrored Drive To New Drive?
Oct 9, 2010
I bought a new MBP, but before I did I used super duper to make mirror image of the hard drive, which I can successfully boot from. On my old MBP I I have parallels and Windows XP. I no longer have the windows discs, nor do i have the parallels software (at least I don't have the dmg file I was electronically sent). So I was wondering without installing the old hard drive, or always using to boot from if I want to use parallels, is there a way to transfer the applications to my new hard drive and use them?

I have a PowerMac G3 running OS X Server 10.4.7. There is an 80GB ATA boot hard drive and a SATA card and two 250GB SATA drives. One SATA drive is existing and has data on it; I just installed the second one because I want to mirror the 1st drive onto the 2nd one.My questions are: how do I do it? When I try to create a RAID set in the Disk Utility GUI, it says all data will be destroyed. I cancelled that.So I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror disk1, which told me I could only mirror volumes. The volume name is RAID, so I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror /Volumes/RAID which gave me an error "Error enabling disk to RAID Could not unmount disk (-10000)"

I have recently made the plunge into mac kingdom and very pleased so far.
I am going through the pain staking task of transferring music, photos etc.. from my windows laptop to my new macbook pro.
I started off by setting up file sharing and copying files but it is taking absolutely ages.
Ideally I would like to use my 500gb mybook external hard drive but given an experience I just had when putting a memory stick in my mac straight after loading it up from my pc am I likely to lose all my current external hard drive data?
Complete ball ache if thats the case as all my films are on there and burning it all to DVD would take forever.

I figured it was the motherboard and that is way too costly to replace. So I just bought a Macbook and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'm pretty sure that the hard drive on my pavillion is still ok, so what I've purchased a hard drive enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive as well as transfer my files to my new macbook. My question is whether I would be able to transfer my files from my PC hard drive to the macbook directly without formatting the hard drive because that will erase all my files.

Had a hard drive failing/failure. I am having my bad hard drive replaced with a bigger hard drive. (New Obviously) I have an iMac. (1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17-inch) To have my data transferred from the old drive will cost over a hundred bucks more. I am trying to save money but transferring it myself. All im looking to transfer is my photos. I did not have an external drive but i WILL purchse one now. My question, (to save some money) is how would i transfer my old pictures from my old drive, too my new installed hard drive. Can i use USB? Firewire?

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

About six months ago I ran into the problem a lot of people face with a macbook, where my itunes library was taking up an unreasonable portion of my internal hard drive. I took the easy way out, and just got a 500gb usb seagate portable. Now being that I'm a dj, and I'm always producing tracks and remixes on the go I needed to have my music with me all the time so I velcroed the drive to the back of my mac and basically always left it on and treated it like a second partition.

I have a MBP which is about a year and a half old. I have begun to run out of space on my MBP and am considering updating the hard drive to an SSD. However, I do not want to lose my data in the process and would like everything to be the same once transferred over.I understand that changing the Hard Drive will void my warranty and I am okay with that. Here are my questions and concerns:My MBP has both OS X and windows (via Boot Camp). I would like to retain the data of both partitions exactly as is on my new hard drive. So to do that, what do I have to do? I imagine that I need a special piece of software for both OS X and Windows to clone my hard drive. What software do I need? Then after cloning the drive, what would I have to do?

Hard drive on MBP died. Saved a bunch of the data by using an external hard drive with Leopard. Now using MBP with brand-new harddrive. Saved all my personal data, including the Sites folder. I did not copy the Library folder - the domain file is gone. Now I'm trying to work on my website with iWeb - I have all the data from my Sites folder - but I don't know how to get iWeb to open the website project.

I recently bought a WD 1TB external USB drive, however when I move files to it OS X copies the files onto the drive instead of simply moving them, as is standard procedure for external drives. I'm wondering if just transferring the files would be any faster, and if so, how to do it?

So I'm having problems with my setup, and looking to find a possible remedy. I have setup my Mac with a 120G SSD in my main drive bay, and moved my 750G HHD to an optibay setup. I booted off a USB copy of lion to install it on the SSD, used migration assistant to move my things over.
So currently it boots off the SSD (named Boot Drive), has a "boot user" with its home folder on the SSD, and has my old user (lets call it "olduser") on the orignal drive HDD (called Optibay) and I created a new user when logged into the "boot user" with the same name "olduser", and moved its home directory to the old HDD path, /Volumes/Optibay/Users/Olduser. Then I deleted everything except the user folder on the HDD.
BUT, I'm having spin up issues, and constant read/write on the HDD in the optibay even on the boot user, and at times it shouldn't be. I have moved my files around enough that I can now fit the "olduser" onto the SSD, (moved the contents of Movies, Pictures, Documents, and Music folders into new folders @ /Volumes/Optibay/Myfolders).
So how do I move the home folder/user from the HDD to the SSD. I can't quite figure out the best way to do it with preserving all my settings and everything that is at the root level on the HDD to the SSD. Trying to preserve permissions seems to be the biggest issue. Should I be logged into "olderuser" and copy the user folder onto the SSD, then login to the boot user and just change the home directory path to the new one? Or should I be logged onto boot user when I make the move? The end goal is to make the optibay drive ejectable while running on my olduser account so I can get it to spin down

After weeks of issues since migrating my entire iTunes library to a NAS (WD MyCloud) from a PC I think I'm going to move it to the harddrive of my new iMac.
My questions are:
1) iTunes keeps showing that there are around 150 songs it can't locate (displays the exclamation mark next to the songs) which I then have to find manually - do I need to find all songs first before moving the library?
2) The total size will eventually be around 550GB once all further CD's are ripped - will this considerably slow down my iMac which is 1TB? (so far I have only used 79GB of it)
3) One of the reasons I want to move the library is that the NAS somehow more than duplicated most of the files so now my itunes shows I have 264GB of music but the NAS is showing 540GB - iff I migrate the iTunes library, I'm assuming it will only move the 264GB that it links to and not all the duplicates - is this correct?

I tried to install Parallels for Mac 4.0. In the process of installing Parallels and Windows XP I managed to get a cd stuck in the drive. There is NO icon on the mac desktop. I have uninstalled Parallels according to information if found on the web. It was supposed to be a complete uninstall but I still cannot get the cd out. I am very new to Mac and I am at a loss as to what to do. The stuck cd is NOT an os (such as xp), it was a program cd that I was trying to install in the virtual xp drive in Parallels. Can anyone steer me in the right direction. At this point I can't even do a install because of the stuck disk.

if you'd be so kind...I've had my iMac for almost a year, but have yet to make the big switch totally.
I am getting an external drive today to store music, photos, etc. Simply enough to set them up and have items go directly to it instead of internal drive? I know it is, just want peace of mind
MY big ?...I have lots of music on itunes on my pc...can I take it off the pc and out onto the external to use with my imac? Still have to do two separate partitions, or? Or, easier to get all my music onto ipod, then use Expod to download to the external? Once it is all on the external, how do I call it up, easily? itunes automatically search to play music from it and save new music to the external or do I have set it up or assign things differently?

I have a stock Macbook Pro 17in i5 laptop. I just got a new hard drive. I just did a time machine backup (to an external hard drive) of everything on my computer before i switch out the old drive to a new SSD OWC...Is this enough of a back up to where once i get the new SSD drive in i simply go to the time machine and it will put everything back the way i had it on the old hard drive correct? Or is there another step i need to take to make sure i transfer all of my data safely. I cant find my parallels product key nor my Microsoft word product key so i was wondering is this going to be an issue on the new hard drive? will the computer ask for the keys or since i backed everything up in time machine will it come back like normal.

I have a USB 2.0 hard drive that I have been using to back up movie files. It has let me transfer files from my Macbook Pro HD to it hundreds of times without any problems.
I have this .mkv file that keeps giving me an error when I try to transfer it to my external. I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0)".
I have transferred plenty of .mkv files to my external with no problems. All other files work fine when I transfer them. It will let me move my .mkv file around my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive but it won't let me transfer it to the external.

I'm new to Mac so I'm sure its user error.
I recently bought a Macbook and I have a external USB hard drive that is formatted NTFS. I copied all of the files off of external HD and pasted them on my Macbook. I slicked the external hard drive and formatted it as FAT32 so I could read & write on both a PC and Mac if I need.
Anyways, once the external hard drive was formatted I tried moving all of the files back to the external but I keep getting and error code once I paste the files on the external drive. It says: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. Error code 0"
Now I'm not sure if the files are locked or what but I need help. I want to move them back to the external drive. It actually copies a few files to the external but nowhere near what all I need. They are just some .doc files that are on there

My trusty 6 year old mac book crashed. Took it to apple, they couldn't recover. Purchased new 15 mac book pro with 1TB. drive. Removed my HD from the old mac book and trying to transfer files via sata cable to USB directly to my new mac. Been successful with lots of files. Problem is, new mac shows old file icons from Applications, library, users, etc. but not contents. I tried copying entire hard drive... Wont work.
Then went into users, from my main folder with most of my saved stuff. The largest two folders I want to recover is the Documents folder and the Images folder. I cant open and see the files inside because for over 24 hours now it has been showing "Preparing to copy files". When I went to the images folder after about 6 hours it went from preparing, to copying with estimated time of 6 days to complete. If I could see the contents in the folders, I could simply just transfer the main Items needed?
